What happens when a Saudi engineer takes a path from MIT and Silicon Valley’s biggest technology companies to building a startup backed by Y Combinator and Andreessen Horowitz and eventually helping build the next generation of AI at OpenAI? That is the story of Abdulrahman Alfozan. Abdulrahman Alfozan is a Saudi technology engineer, entrepreneur, investor, and AI leader whose career has taken him through some of the most important technology ecosystems in the world; from Saudi, Sweden, Germany, Ghana to US. After studying Computer Science and Engineering at MIT, Abdulrahman began building expertise at the intersection of large-scale data, distributed systems, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. His career included roles at SAP and Microsoft, followed by five years at Facebook (Meta), where he worked as a Senior Engineer on data infrastructure, distributed computing systems, machine learning applications, and large-scale analytics pipelines. But Silicon Valley was not simply a place where Abdulrahman worked, it became a platform from which he began building. He became a Founding Engineer at Nash, a technology company founded in 2021 to transform last-mile delivery through software. Nash went through Y Combinator's S21 batch, giving Abdulrahman a front-row seat to one of Silicon Valley's most powerful startup accelerators. Nash's trajectory moved remarkably quickly. The company raised $125,000 from Y Combinator, followed by a $7.8 million seed round led by Andreessen Horowitz. In July 2022, a16z doubled down and led Nash's $20 million Series A, bringing the company's publicly announced total funding to $27.8 million. The significance of that journey is not simply the amount of capital raised. Nash went from a YC startup to an a16z-backed company, with Andreessen Horowitz leading both its seed and Series A rounds. a16z described Nash as building infrastructure that could allow businesses across industries from retail and food to healthcare to offer delivery without building their own fleets. And Abdulrahman's journey did not stop at Nash. Today, he is an Engineering Lead at OpenAI, working on AI agents and data platforms. He also serves as a Venture Partner at Raed Ventures, bringing his experience as an operator, engineer, and startup builder into venture investing and founder support. His journey also includes a strong connection to the Saudi technology ecosystem. Earlier in his career, Abdulrahman was part of Saudi Silicon Valley, a technology consulting initiative built around bringing Silicon Valley-level technical expertise to Saudi organizations. The group's work included technical RFP development, proposal evaluation, technical leadership and resourcing, distributed systems, big data, AI, machine learning, and technology investment advisory. Abdulrahman's profile in the initiative identified him as a Facebook Senior Systems Engineer specializing in applied machine learning, data analytics and engineering, and IoT systems. His story therefore connects several worlds that rarely appear in the same career: Saudi Arabia, MIT, Microsoft, SAP, Meta, Y Combinator, Nash, Andreessen Horowitz, venture capital, and now OpenAI. It is a story about more than working for great technology companies. It is about moving between engineering, entrepreneurship, venture capital, and frontier AI and bringing knowledge from Silicon Valley back into the Saudi technology ecosystem.
