Episode 40: Beyond the Debate: Approaching Assisted Dying in Medical Education

In this episode of TASME TiME, we explore a challenging and increasingly important question for medical education: How do we prepare future doctors to talk about assisted dying? Joining us is Dr Annabel Price, Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist in the Older People’s Team at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and a teaching specialist in palliative care. With a background spanning psychiatry, palliative care and medical education, Annabel brings a thoughtful perspective to teaching about one of the most sensitive topics future doctors may encounter. Together, we explore how assisted dying can be approached in undergraduate medical education, creating space for students to engage with complexity, reflect on their own responses and consider different perspectives. We discuss the importance of sensitive, balanced teaching that acknowledges the emotional and ethical challenges of the topic, as well as the complex legal landscape, with the legal status of assisted dying varying across UK jurisdictions. This conversation considers how we can better prepare future doctors for the conversations they may have with patients, families and colleagues, and how medical education can help them navigate uncertainty with compassion and care.
