Do You Know Him?: The Name Jesus Calls You

What if the name people use for you isn't the name Jesus uses? In week four of our Do You Know Him series in the Gospel of John, we close out John chapter one and watch a simple invitation change three lives: Andrew brings his brother Simon, Philip brings his friend Nathanael, and Jesus meets each of them with a surprising word. Along the way, Pastor David challenges the idea that you have to be a pastor, a theologian, or have your life together before you can invite someone to meet Jesus. Andrew had one encounter and that was enough. The message asks a pointed question: if the only reason a chair sits empty is that no one invited someone to fill it, who is your Andrew moment for? Then it goes deeper into identity. Simon carried a name with baggage, and Jesus renamed him Peter before he had become it. The message looks at the names we still call ourselves, the new name promised to every believer in Revelation, and the One who is the ladder between heaven and earth. It closes with an open invitation to know Jesus for the first time.

Do You Know Him?: Come and See

What do you really want from Jesus? John the Baptist pointed his disciples toward Jesus, and when they began following Him, Jesus asked them a simple question: “What do you want?” Their response revealed something deeper than a desire for what Jesus could give them: they wanted to be with Him. Following Jesus doesn't mean we'll always know where He's taking us. Sometimes He simply says, “Come, and you will see.” But worries, wealth, and the desires of this life can slowly crowd out our devotion and leave us complacent. This message invites us to examine what has captured our attention, return to wholehearted surrender, and follow Jesus into whatever He has next, even when we can't see the way forward.

Do You Know Him?: Clear the Way

John the Baptist had crowds, influence, and every opportunity to make his ministry about himself. Instead, he repeatedly pointed away from himself and toward Jesus. His message was simple: “I am not the Messiah. Clear the way for the Lord.” John understood that Jesus was not merely a teacher or religious figure; He was God, He was holy, and He was worthy of complete surrender. This message challenges us to recover John's posture. When we truly understand who Jesus is, worship and obedience can no longer be casual. We are called to approach God with reverence and awe, surrender our own agendas, and allow the Holy Spirit to empower us as witnesses. Our assignment isn't to draw attention to ourselves; it's to clear the way so the people around us can see Jesus.

Do You Know Him?: You Can't Save Yourself

What does it actually mean to know Jesus? As Great Oaks begins a new series through the Gospel of John, this message challenges us to consider whether we truly know Jesus or have simply accumulated information about Him. We can know the Bible, know the facts, go to church, and even agree that Jesus is the Son of God without ever allowing that knowledge to become relationship. John introduces Jesus as the eternal Word of God, the source of life, and the Light that shines into our darkness. We don't need another set of rules or a better version of ourselves; we need a Rescuer. Jesus came to bring us out of darkness and into His light, and the invitation is personal: Do you know Him?

Summer of Psalms: You Don’t Have to Hide

What do you do when you blow it? For many Christians, sin immediately leads to hiding from God, shame, condemnation, self-loathing, or promises to simply try harder next time. But Psalm 32 gives us a completely different roadmap for what to do when we fail. King David calls those who receive God's forgiveness “blessed” - even those who have blown it. Through the finished work of Jesus, our debt is forgiven, our sin is covered, and Christ's righteousness is given to us. When we stop allowing shame and pride to keep us from God, confess what we've done, and turn our direction back toward Him, we can leave the past where it belongs and walk forward in freedom, joy, and unity with God.

Summer of Psalms: Renew Your Vows

New seasons have a way of making us think about what comes next, but they can also be an opportunity to stop and ask what needs to change within us. In Psalm 101, King David has been anointed as king and is preparing to step into a new season of purpose and responsibility. Before he does, he makes a series of commitments to God: renewing his vows and deciding how he wants to live. This message walks through those commitments and challenges us to do the same. Worship God first. Depend on the Holy Spirit rather than your own strength. Live with integrity when nobody is watching. Be intentional about what and who you allow into your life. And above all, learn to love people with the kind of truth and goodness that reflects Jesus.

Summer of Psalms: An "Only God" Story

There are seasons in life when you simply don't know what's next. You're waiting, you're wondering, you're afraid you missed something, and you can't see how the pieces are going to come together. Pastor David opens Psalm 25 through the lens of his own “Only God” story: a season in 2019 when he had no idea what was next, only to watch God lead him to Great Oaks in a way he never could have planned. Psalm 25 becomes an invitation to make that same prayer our own: “O Lord, I give my life to you.” We don't have to figure everything out, control our circumstances, or know what God is doing next. We can surrender our whole lives to Him, come out of hiding, allow Him to lead and teach us, and trust that one day we may look back and say, “How could I have known? Only God.”

Summer of Psalms: A Joyful Christian Is a Healthy Christian (Noah Arevalo)

What does it actually mean to live as a joyful Christian? In this message, Noah Arevalo challenges us to consider whether we've allowed the gospel to become something we simply know instead of something we continually remember and experience. When life gets difficult, it's easy to fix our eyes on our circumstances, our problems, and everything we feel is going wrong. But Scripture gives us a different place to look: Jesus. Through Psalm 32 and the message of the cross, we're reminded that there is joy in knowing our sins are forgiven, joy in remembering Jesus' sacrifice, and joy in the security of knowing that nothing can separate us from God's love. A joyful Christian isn't someone who never struggles; they're someone who keeps looking back to the One who has already conquered sin, death, and everything we could ever face.
