Rejoicing in the Truth | Exodus 20:16

This week we will be exploring the ninth commandment in Exodus 20:16, Rejoicing in the Truth. The ninth commandment is one that many people are familiar with. Don't lie! Or in biblical language, You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. As parents, we learn early on that this is one of those commandments that we have teach your children. Lying seems to be second nature to us as humans. Because of sin, we are self-protectors and lying often seems like the best way to protect yourself. "I didn't do it." "I don't remember you saying that." "I don't know who ate the last chocolate chip cookie." Almost every day we are confronted with the opportunity to hide the truth, twist the truth, tilt the truth a little bit in our favor, or downright deny or contradict the truth. The scary thing is when we even convince ourselves that a lie is the truth. The ninth commandment not only confronts us with the destructive nature of lying but also with the vital importance of knowing, telling, and living in the truth. God is the God of truth. Satan is the father of lies. And each day our words and actions reflect who is most influencing our heart. As Jesus said, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31-32) May we be a people who seek the truth, hear the truth, believe the truth, and abide in the truth each day!

Protecting Property | Exodus 20:15

This week we will be exploring the eighth commandment in Exodus 20:15, Protecting Property. Well, here we go again. Another two word command in Hebrew. Lo tignob (Hebrew) Never steal. It seems like a simple enough command. Don't shoplift. Don't break into someone's house. Don't take things that are not yours. But there are so many more implications to this command. Like the other commandments, the 8th commandment echoes back to God's creative design. We were created to rule, to have dominion, to make use of the resources that God has blessed us with, to steward over and care for the earth. We were made not only to worship but to work. We were designed to make an impact in this world, to steward well the corner of the earth where God has placed us. And so really this command is all about taking responsibility for what God has called me to do and not infringing on others or taking what God has given them. It is about faithful stewardship of what God has placed in my sphere of responsibility and a respectful honoring of the boundaries that God has placed between you and me. When I steal, I not only evade my own responsibility but I also invade your territory...and try to make it my own. This simple command thus speaks volumes about knowing who I am, knowing what God has called me to do, being responsible, respecting your space, honoring limitations and boundaries, and being faithful and content with the stewardship that God has given me. It also speaks volumes about the limitations and boundaries of government. It is not a coincidence that a society that devalues life, sex, and marriage also devalues personal responsibility and starts moving more and more toward socialism and a victim mentality. The Ten Commandments are, oh, so relevant today. May God ground our faith, renew our minds, and give us wisdom to live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present age!

Honoring Marriage | Exodus 20:14

This week we will be exploring the seventh commandment in Exodus 20:14, Honoring Marriage. Just like the sixth commandment, the seventh commandment is just two words in Hebrew. Lo tin'aph (Hebrew) Two words. Six consonants. And volumes of meaning! Marriage is sacred in God's eyes. God designed marriage. It is His idea. He officiated at the first wedding in human history. He created Adam and Eve to be in intimate union together. He purposed that human life would only come from this bond. He made marriage the foundational relationship for all of human society...and He protected sexual union within that exclusive, lifelong marriage covenant. It is a beautiful design. And sin has attacked it, corrupted it, and violated it in so many ways. It is no coincidence that a society that has rejected God has also desecrated the sanctity of life, the sanctity of marriage, and the sanctity of sexual union. The seventh commandment prohibits adultery, the breaking of the covenant of marriage through sexual immorality. This one command speaks to our current culture in numerous ways. Pornography. Homosexuality. The "hook up" culture. Fornication. Adultery. No-fault divorce. Sexual abuse. And a whole host of other sins. It is no wonder that people do not want God or the Bible in our culture. This command hits us in the areas of our deepest wants, wounds, lusts, and longings for autonomous freedom. The reason this command is so impactful is because the marriage covenant, and the sexual union designed within this covenant, are so beautiful and powerful. We will examine the sanctity and beauty of God's design this Sunday and remind ourselves of how important it is to honor and protect marriage, sex, and the family. May God captivate our hearts, purify our minds, and strengthen our will to pursue His holiness in our daily lives!

Honoring Human Life | Exodus 20:13

This week we will be exploring the sixth commandment in Exodus 20:13, Honoring Human Life. Two words in Hebrew. That is all the sixth commandment is. Lo tirtsakh (Hebrew) You shall not murder. Or, perhaps more literally, "never murder." These two words carry so much weight. Respect life. Honor life. Protect life. Stand in awe at the wonder, beauty, and dignity of human life. From the moment of conception, life is a miraculous thing. In all of our intelligence and technology, we cannot replicate life. It is beyond us. It is incomprehensible. It is divine. Each person is made in the image of God. This fact alone is enough to make us stop and think. We are the representatives of God on earth. How we treat one another is a reflection of our view of God. Each human life is sacred and should be treated as such. The principle is simple but living it out is not easy...and not always clear. What about capital punishment? What about fighting in a war? The sixth commandment also touches on such contemporary issues as abortion, euthanasia, eugenics, racial discrimination, suicide, self-defense, drug abuse, verbal abuse, and even AI. Two words in Hebrew...with tons and tons of meaning. We will scratch the surface on Sunday and remind ourselves of how amazing, beautiful, and sacred is human life... and how important it is to see each person as made in the image of God. We will also celebrate communion on Sunday as fellow partakers of God's amazing grace! May God fill us with His Spirit so that we can live each day as His ambassadors and ministers of reconciliation on this earth!
