S.O.S: When to ask for help with Phil Hill

In this episode of The Caregiver Café with Roz Jones, Roz continues her conversation with security expert and former family caregiver Phil Hill about the emotional weight of caregiving, knowing when to ask for help, and what happens when caregivers try to carry too much for too long. Phil reflects on the years he spent caring for his father while he and his wife were also helping care for her parents. He shares how managing several caregiving situations at once affected his family, his business, his relationships, and his emotional well-being. Although Phil had access to a long-term care insurance policy and other resources, he waited to use them because he believed he might need them later. Roz reminds caregivers that the time to ask for help is often much earlier than they realize. When a loved one moves into the home, the family should begin identifying gaps in care, exploring available benefits, and creating a support plan before exhaustion and crisis take over. Roz and Phil also discuss caregiver guilt and the belief that no one else can care for a loved one as well as the primary caregiver. Trying to become a full-time caregiver without adequate support can leave a person stressed, overwhelmed, exhausted, and unable to care for themselves. This conversation reminds caregivers that support is needed during the caregiving journey and after it ends. Grief counseling, faith leaders, family members, professional caregivers, healthcare providers, and community resources can all become part of the caregiver’s support system. Thank you for listening. Dad's Dementia: Grieving the Living with Phil Hill

In this episode of The Caregiver Café with Roz Jones, Roz is joined by security expert and former family caregiver Phil Hill for an honest conversation about caring for a parent through cognitive decline, dementia, and the final years of life. Phil shares how he first began noticing changes in his father, including confusion, difficulty navigating familiar places, changes in his appearance, and trouble managing responsibilities that had once been routine. Those early signs led to doctor visits, cognitive testing, difficult decisions about driving, and eventually moving his father into his home. As the primary caregiver, Phil had to learn how to coordinate support among family members while also caring for his wife, his children, his business, and himself. He explains how even small contributions from relatives, such as taking his father to the barber shop, spending an afternoon with him, or providing companionship, gave him valuable moments of rest. Roz and Phil also discuss the emotional side of caregiving. Watching a parent decline can bring grief long before the person passes away. Caregivers may lose sleep, experience exhaustion, make difficult safety decisions, and manage behaviors their loved one may not fully understand or remember. Through it all, Phil relied on three things: prayer, patience, and love. Prayer helped him continue when caregiving became overwhelming.Patience helped him respond to confusion, frustration, sleepless nights, and difficult moments.Love reminded him why caring for his father mattered, even when the journey was painful.Phil also shares why caregivers must make room for self-care and seek support from people who understand the caregiving journey. Whether that support comes from family members, professional caregivers, support groups, faith communities, or the stories of other caregivers, no one should try to carry the entire responsibility alone. This episode is a heartfelt reminder that caregiving is about more than completing daily tasks. It is about protecting your loved one’s safety, honoring their life, adjusting as their needs change, and continuing to show up with compassion. Thank you for listening. Coping Tips For the Overwhelmed Caregiver

In this episode of The Caregiver Café with Roz Jones, Roz is talking about something many caregivers know all too well: feeling overwhelmed while caring for an aging loved one. Caregiving can be an all-consuming and demanding role. Between doctor’s appointments, medications, meals, daily routines, work responsibilities, and trying to care for yourself, it can start to feel like too much. But Roz reminds caregivers that overwhelm does not always mean you are failing. Sometimes it means you need a better system, more support, and a little more preparation. Roz breaks down practical coping tips caregivers can use to reduce stress and create more breathing room in their day. She talks about the power of routines, using a calendar or planner, writing down appointments, preparing in advance, and building in extra time so caregivers are not always rushing from one thing to the next. This episode is a practical reminder that caregiving requires preparation, not perfection. Whether it is meal prepping, planning appointments, creating routines, or giving yourself extra time to get your loved one ready, small steps can help reduce the stress and pressure that often come with caregiving. Caregivers do not have to carry everything in chaos. With the right routines, support, and planning, you can create more peace for yourself and the loved one in your care. Thank you for listening. What to Know About the Cost of Prescriptions

In this episode of The Caregiver Café with Roz Jones, Roz is talking about something many seniors and caregivers are feeling at the pharmacy counter: the rising cost of prescription medications. As aging loved ones begin taking more medications, those costs can add up quickly. One prescription may not seem like much, but when there are several medications involved, the monthly total can become overwhelming for seniors, families, and caregivers trying to manage care on a fixed income. Roz breaks down practical ways caregivers can help reduce the cost of prescriptions. She talks about asking doctors about generic medications, looking for less expensive brand-name options, using mail-order pharmacy services, reviewing Medicare drug plans during annual enrollment, and checking for state or manufacturer assistance programs. She also reminds caregivers that medication costs should not be ignored. If a loved one’s prescriptions are becoming too expensive, caregivers can step in as advocates by reviewing the medication list, asking questions, and talking with the doctor, pharmacist, or drug manufacturer about possible savings. This episode is a practical reminder that caregiving also includes helping loved ones manage the cost of care. Medication is part of health and safety, and when prescriptions become unaffordable, it can affect whether a loved one takes the medicine they need. Caregivers do not have to accept high prescription costs without asking questions. There may be options, programs, and savings available, but families have to know where to look and who to ask. Thank you for listening. If this episode encouraged you, supported you, or gave you something to think about as a caregiver, be sure to stay connected with Roz Jones. Patient Advocacy : The Caregivers Role

In this episode of The Caregiver Café with Roz Jones, Roz is talking about an important role many caregivers step into without always realizing it: becoming an advocate for their loved one at the doctor’s office. Doctor visits can feel overwhelming for both the caregiver and the aging loved one. There may be anxiety, confusion, medication changes, new symptoms, treatment options, and instructions that are hard to remember once the appointment is over. That is why caregivers need to walk in prepared, ask the right questions, and make sure they leave with clear answers. Roz breaks down practical ways caregivers can advocate before, during, and after medical appointments. She talks about preparing ahead of time, writing down questions and concerns, tracking new symptoms or changes, taking notes during the visit, sharing updates with the care team, and making sure everyone involved in the loved one’s care is on the same page. She also reminds caregivers not to be afraid to ask the doctor to explain things in plain language. If something is unclear, uncomfortable, or confusing, caregivers have the right and responsibility to ask questions. Roz also encourages families to understand treatment options, possible side effects, medication changes, and how each decision may affect their loved one’s independence and daily routine. This episode is a practical reminder that advocacy is part of caregiving. It is not enough to just show up at the appointment. Caregivers need to listen, take notes, ask questions, review medications, and help coordinate between doctors, specialists, and the full care team. When you advocate well, you help protect your loved one’s health, safety, comfort, and quality of life. Thank you for listening. Assisted Living; What Caregivers Need To Know

In this episode of The Caregiver Café with Roz Jones, Roz is talking about what caregivers need to know when it may be time to look for an assisted living facility. There may come a point in the caregiving journey when your loved one’s care needs become more than one person can safely manage at home. Maybe their condition has changed. Maybe they need help standing, bathing, eating, taking medication, or getting to the bathroom. Maybe it now takes two people to safely transfer them from the bed or chair. When that happens, it may be time to start asking questions and exploring the next level of care. Roz walks listeners through some of the important questions to ask when touring an assisted living facility, including staff ratios, staff turnover, training, medical support, room options, emergency response systems, accessibility, activities, meals, shared spaces, and whether residents can bring personal furniture or pets. This episode is a practical reminder that choosing a facility is not only about the building. It is about safety, staffing, comfort, dignity, and making sure your loved one receives the care they need. Before you take a tour, pour yourself something warm, get your questions ready, and let Roz help you know what to look for, what to ask, and what to pay attention to. Thank you for listening. Handling Criticism As A Family Caregiver

In this episode of The Caregiver Café with Roz Jones, Roz is talking about a topic that can touch every caregiver at some point: criticism. Being criticized while you are caring for a loved one does not feel good. It can make you feel judged, unappreciated, or like nothing you are doing is enough. But Roz reminds listeners that the way we respond to criticism can either create more chaos or open the door to better communication, support, and growth. Roz shares how caregivers can begin to embrace criticism by using it as an opportunity for personal growth, improved relationships, and greater confidence. Instead of immediately becoming defensive, caregivers can ask questions, invite others to show a better way, and create space for honest conversations. This episode is a reminder that everyone may have an opinion, but not everyone understands what caregiving looks like day to day. Still, when handled with wisdom, criticism can become a chance to improve care, strengthen family communication, and reduce tension along the caregiving journey. So pour yourself something warm and join Roz at The Caregiver Café as she talks about how caregivers can respond to criticism with grace, boundaries, and a little bit of strategy. Caregiving Is a Family Affair

In this episode of The Caregiver Café with Roz Jones, Roz is talking about something that many families face but do not always know how to handle: caregiving as a family affair. When an aging parent, loved one, or family member needs care, one person often becomes the main caregiver while everyone else steps back, scatters, or assumes that person has it all under control. But caregiving should not fall on one person without a plan, support, or honest family conversations. Roz breaks down how families can reduce the chaos in caregiving by understanding where tension comes from, setting realistic expectations, creating a care plan, assigning roles, and being honest about what each person can and cannot do. She also reminds listeners that every family member may not be able or willing to provide hands-on care, and that is why outside resources, respite care, and hired support may need to become part of the plan. This episode is a practical reminder that caregiving requires communication, boundaries, preparation, and teamwork. Whether you live close by or long distance, there is usually some way to support the person providing daily care. Caregiving may be a family affair, but it works best when the family has a plan.
