A useful podcast on some levels. What made me (and I suspect others) unfollow the channel is the decision to feature guest Dave Buonaguidi.
Rather than maintain a focus on the broader topic of building an art brand — that is, rather than providing input of value to listeners — Buonaguidi used the platform to air his political ideology, including repeated aspersions aimed at “white males.” Specifically, he refers to them as, among other things, “not nice people” and “the most appalling people historically ever.“ The same white males, interestingly, who built the society, culture and industry that Buonaguidi has benefited from most of his life.
Interestingly, if another podcaster made such derogatory references to “black males”, “Asian males”, etc., I suspect that they would be instantly banned by Apple for hate speech — rightfully so. Yet Buonaguidi casts aspersions at a racial subset with impunity on this platform.
As for the talk itself, I couldn’t get past the small-man posturing, awkward profanity, tedious self-promotion and insistence on sharing a warped world view. There’s a lingering bitterness throughout Buonaguidi’s talk that I suspect is linked to two failed agencies and an unsuccessful foray into fine art — if one can call a collection of motivational posters “art.” Simply put, he’s just an unhappy little, well, white male.
Do yourselves a favor and skip the tedious Buonaguidi episode.
