Business Growth Is Not a Solo Journey: Lessons from Hiring a Sleep Consultant

Welcome to The K9PT Academy podcast, the only podcast in veterinary rehabilitation & physical therapy that focuses on helping business owners and entrepreneurs build and scale a profitable and successful canine rehabilitation business!     In this episode, I share a personal story about working with a sleep consultant for our twins — and how that experience reminded me of one of the biggest lessons canine rehabpreneurs need to understand when growing a business: sometimes the fastest path forward is getting the right help. After trying to navigate sleep regressions on our own years ago with our oldest daughter, we learned firsthand how valuable professional guidance can be. And recently, instead of spending weeks frustrated and exhausted trying to “figure it out ourselves,” we immediately reached out for help again… and within days things completely changed. The same principle applies to business. Too many canine rehabpreneurs try to build their businesses entirely on their own — piecing together free content, podcasts, webinars, and random advice — when in reality the right mentor or coach could help them avoid costly mistakes, move faster, and create a much more sustainable business. In this episode, we discuss the importance of mentorship, investing in yourself, and why getting guidance is often one of the highest ROI decisions you can make as a business owner. Listen to the full episode as we discuss:   👶 Professional guidance can dramatically shorten the learning curve. Just like working with a sleep consultant helped us quickly solve the twins’ sleep regression, the right mentor or coach can help rehabpreneurs avoid unnecessary frustration and wasted time. 🧠 Free content can help — but personalized guidance accelerates growth. Podcasts, books, and webinars are valuable, but there comes a point where individualized strategy, feedback, and accountability become game changers. ⏳ Trying to figure everything out alone often costs more in the long run. Many rehabpreneurs hesitate to invest in mentorship because of the upfront cost, while overlooking the amount of time, energy, and missed opportunities they lose by staying stuck. 💰 Investing in yourself and your business often produces exponential returns. A few thousand dollars invested into the right guidance can often create significantly more revenue, profitability, and sustainability over the following years. 🚧 The fear of investing is often the real bottleneck. Many canine rehab therapists are willing to invest heavily in certifications and equipment, but hesitate when it comes to investing in business education and mentorship. ⚙️ Mentorship provides strategy — but execution is still your responsibility. Hiring a coach or mentor does not magically fix the business. Success still requires implementing the systems, strategies, and action steps discussed. 📈 Business growth becomes easier when you stop reinventing the wheel. Learning from someone who has already walked the path can help you avoid common mistakes and make better decisions faster. 🔥 Successful rehabpreneurs are willing to invest in growth. One common trait among thriving business owners is their willingness to continually learn, seek guidance, and improve both clinically and professionally. 🌱 You do not have to build your business alone. One of the most powerful mindset shifts for rehabpreneurs is realizing that asking for help is not weakness — it is often the smartest and fastest way forward.   Are you ready to join the Business Sherpa and work directly with me to help you grow and scale a profitable and sustainable canine rehab business? Leads vs Conversions: The Real Reason Your Schedule Isn’t Full

Welcome to The K9PT Academy podcast, the only podcast in veterinary rehabilitation & physical therapy that focuses on helping business owners and entrepreneurs build and scale a profitable and successful canine rehabilitation business!   One of the most common questions I get from canine rehabpreneurs—whether they’re just starting out or already established—is: 👉 “How do I get more patients?” And while that might seem like a simple marketing problem, the reality is… it’s often not. In this episode, we break down one of the biggest misconceptions in business growth: the idea that more leads automatically solve your problems. Because in many cases, the issue isn’t how many inquiries you’re getting—it’s what’s happening after those leads come in. If you’ve ever felt stuck with an inconsistent caseload, struggled to fill your schedule, or wondered why growth feels harder than it should… this episode will help you identify what’s really going on. Listen to the full episode as we discuss:    🎯 More Leads Isn’t Always the Solution A lighter caseload doesn’t automatically mean you need more leads—it could be a conversion problem, not a marketing one. 🔍 Symptoms vs Root Causes An empty schedule is just a symptom—real growth comes from identifying whether the issue is marketing or sales. ⚖️ Two Different Problems, Two Different Solutions You either have a lead generation problem (marketing) or a conversion problem (sales and nurturing)—and each requires a completely different approach. 📊 Track Your Numbers or Guess Forever Without tracking leads, lead conversion, and eval conversion, it’s impossible to make informed decisions. 🚫 More Leads Can Actually Make Things Worse If your systems are weak, adding more leads just means more missed opportunities. 🧠 Most Rehabpreneurs Focus on the Wrong Thing There’s an overemphasis on getting more inquiries and not enough focus on improving sales and nurturing systems. 🌐 Marketing Is More Than Just “Getting Seen” If you truly need more leads, you must analyze where they come from, how you stand out, and what’s converting. 💬 Nurturing Drives Buy-In Strong communication and follow-up systems are what turn leads into committed clients. 🚀 Growth Comes From Solving the Right Problem Once you identify the real bottleneck, growth becomes much more predictable and scalable.   The 3rd and new edition of Canine Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation" is now available and you can order your copy using this link! From Overwhelmed to Focused: The 4 Pillars of a Winning Growth Plan

Welcome to The K9PT Academy podcast, the only podcast in veterinary rehabilitation & physical therapy that focuses on helping business owners and entrepreneurs build and scale a profitable and successful canine rehabilitation business!  We are already through Q1 and well into Q2 of 2026… and for many canine rehabpreneurs, this is where things either start to drift—or where we take control. If your plan didn’t go exactly as expected, that’s not failure… that’s feedback. In this episode, we break down the 4 Pillars of a Strong Growth Plan, a framework I recently shared with our Incubator Mastermind to help simplify decision-making, eliminate overwhelm, and create real momentum in your business. Because the truth is… most growth plans don’t fail due to lack of effort—they fail due to lack of clarity, focus, and execution. If you want to make 2026 your best year yet, the next 90 days matter more than you think. Listen to the full episode as we discuss:    🎯 Clarity of Outcome Drives Everything Growth starts with a clear target—not vague goals like “more patients,” but specific, measurable outcomes aligned with your long-term vision. 🚧 Fix the Bottleneck, Not the Symptom Most business owners focus on surface problems, but real progress comes from identifying the true constraint (marketing, sales, time, pricing, or team). 🧩 Focus on ONE Growth Driver Trying to do everything leads to overwhelm. Sustainable growth comes from committing to one key strategy that creates a domino effect. 📊 Use Q1 as Feedback, Not Judgment Your results from the first quarter are data—not failure. Use them to refine your plan and adjust your direction. ⚙️ Execution Systems Create Results Success is built on non-negotiables, boundaries, and consistency, not just good ideas or plans on paper. ⏳ Your Calendar Reflects Your Priorities If you’re not protecting time to work on your business, you’ll stay stuck in a reactional cycle. 🔄 Growth Is Built in Cycles Reset → Refocus → Execute → Repeat. The most successful rehabpreneurs revisit and refine their plan every 90 days. 🔥 Q2 Can Define Your Entire Year What you do in the next quarter will have a major impact on how 2026 ends—there is still time, but only if you act intentionally.   The 3rd and new edition of Canine Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation" is now available and you can order your copy using this link! High Volume vs High Value: The Business Model Mistake Most Rehabpreneurs Make

Welcome to The K9PT Academy podcast, the only podcast in veterinary rehabilitation & physical therapy that focuses on helping business owners and entrepreneurs build and scale a profitable and successful canine rehabilitation business!  The field of canine rehabilitation continues to grow—and with that growth comes more opportunity, more competition, and more decisions for business owners to make. One of the most important (and often overlooked) decisions is this: 👉 What kind of business are you actually trying to build? In this episode, we dive into the difference between high-volume vs high-value business models, why that distinction matters more than most people realize, and how your choices today are shaping the future of your clinic. Because the reality is this… most rehabpreneurs know the type of business they want—but their actions don’t always reflect it. If you want to build a sustainable, fulfilling, and profitable canine rehab business, then every decision needs to align with that vision—and that requires more than just clinical skills. Listen to the full episode as we discuss:    🎯 Define the Business You Actually Want Before anything else, you must decide: what do you want your life and business to look like? Your model should support your life—not the other way around. ⚖️ High Volume vs High Value Is a Critical Choice The real business model decision isn’t mobile vs clinic—it’s volume vs value, and that choice impacts everything from pricing to workload to long-term sustainability. 🔥 Your Background Shapes Your Vision Many rehabpreneurs come from burnout-heavy environments, which is why building a low-volume, high-value clinic becomes such an important goal. 🧠 Clinical Skills Alone Are Not Enough To build the business you want, you must develop marketing, sales, and leadership skills—even if they feel uncomfortable. 🚧 The Real Challenge Is Alignment Most people don’t fail from lack of knowledge—they struggle because their actions don’t match their vision. ⏳ There Are No Shortcuts to Building It Right Creating a sustainable business takes time, consistency, and intentional decisions, even when the process feels slow or tedious. ⚠️ Beware of Short-Term Decisions When you operate from fear, scarcity, or convenience, you risk building a business that doesn’t align with your long-term goals. 🧩 Every Decision Should Pass One Test Ask yourself: 👉 “Does this move me closer to the business I want to build?” 📈 Think Long-Term, Not Just Today It’s easy to get stuck in the day-to-day grind, but success comes from making future-focused decisions. 🧮 There Is No Skipping Steps Building your business is like solving a math problem—you may know the answer, but you still have to show your work to get there.   The 3rd and new edition of Canine Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation" is now available and you can order your copy using this link! Your Journey, Your Rules: Escaping the Comparison Trap

Welcome to The K9PT Academy podcast, the only podcast in veterinary rehabilitation & physical therapy that focuses on helping business owners and entrepreneurs build and scale a profitable and successful canine rehabilitation business!  We all know the saying “comparison is the thief of joy,” yet we still find ourselves comparing our business, our growth, and our progress to others—whether that’s colleagues, competitors, or even people inside our own community. But here’s the problem: most rehabpreneurs are comparing their early chapters to someone else’s finished book… and that comparison will always leave you feeling behind. In this episode, we dive into why this happens, how it affects your decision-making as a business owner, and most importantly—how to take back control of your mindset so you can stay focused on your own journey and continue building the business you actually want. Listen to the full episode as we discuss:    📖 Stop Comparing Your Chapter 1 to Someone Else’s Book Most comparisons are unfair and incomplete, because you’re measuring your early journey against someone else’s years of experience, sacrifices, and behind-the-scenes struggles. 🧠 Comparison Is an Emotional Reaction, Not a Logical One Even as educated professionals, we still fall into comparison because it’s driven by emotion, not logic—and that’s normal. ⚡ You Can’t Control Others, Only Your Response You can’t control clients, veterinarians, competitors, or opinions, but you can fully control how you respond and what you focus on next. 🚫 Don’t Stay Stuck in the Comparison Spiral It’s normal to notice what others are doing, but staying in that mindset leads to self-doubt, hesitation, and poor decision-making. 🎯 Refocus on What You Can Control Progress happens when you shift your attention back to your actions, your strategy, and your next step forward. 🔍 Turn Comparison Into Learning Instead of comparing, start observing and learning—what are others doing well, and how can you apply that in your own way? 🔥 Rehabpreneurs Think Differently You are not here to conform—you are here to build your own path, make decisions aligned with your goals, and grow on your own terms. 💪 Growth Requires Moving Forward Despite Fear You don’t move forward because you’re fearless—you move forward because you understand that progress comes from action, even when it’s uncomfortable.   The 3rd and new edition of Canine Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation" is now available and you can order your copy using this link! The Dumb Tax of Canine Rehab: Equipment, Pricing, Referrals & the Clinician Trap

Welcome to The K9PT Academy podcast, the only podcast in veterinary rehabilitation & physical therapy that focuses on helping business owners and entrepreneurs build and scale a profitable and successful canine rehabilitation business!  As we move into March and head straight into tax season, it felt like the perfect time to revisit a concept I discussed a couple of years ago — The Dreaded Dumb Tax. Unlike the taxes we pay to Uncle Sam, the dumb tax is the price entrepreneurs pay for bad assumptions, incomplete thinking, or decisions made with limited information. Every business owner pays it at some point. The goal isn’t to avoid it completely — that’s impossible. The real goal is to pay it once, learn the lesson, and avoid repeating it. In this episode, we explore some of the most common versions of the dumb tax in the canine rehab world and how learning from them can help you build a smarter, more sustainable business. Listen to the full episode as we discuss:    💸 Understand the Dumb Tax Every entrepreneur pays for bad decisions, wrong assumptions, and incomplete information at some point. The key is to learn quickly and avoid repeating the same mistake. 🏋️ Avoid the Equipment Tax Buying fancy equipment does not create demand. Clinics grow when they build strong marketing and visibility, not when they simply add more tools. 💰 Watch Out for the Pricing Tax Many rehabpreneurs underprice services out of fear, creating busy clinics with low profit, burnout, and unsustainable growth. 🔗 Don’t Fall Into the Referral Dependency Tax Veterinary referrals and word-of-mouth are valuable — but they are not a complete marketing strategy. Clinics need predictable new patient acquisition systems. 🩺 Escape the Clinician Trap Working harder doesn’t fix a broken business model. A clinic that depends entirely on you is not scalable and will eventually lead to overwhelm. 🧠 Ask Better Questions Before Making Decisions Successful business owners slow down and ask better strategic questions, identifying constraints, assumptions, and key decisions before acting. 📚 Learn From Other People’s Dumb Tax One of the fastest ways to grow is by learning through mentors, masterminds, coaching, and shared experiences instead of making every mistake yourself. ⏳ Create Intentional Thinking Time Great clinic owners schedule time to reflect, analyze, and plan rather than constantly reacting to day-to-day problems.   The 3rd and new edition of Canine Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation" is now available and you can order your copy using this link! From Random Visits to Remarkable Journeys - The Disney Model for Canine Rehab

Welcome to The K9PT Academy podcast, the only podcast in veterinary rehabilitation & physical therapy that focuses on helping business owners and entrepreneurs build and scale a profitable and successful canine rehabilitation business!  As the canine rehab field continues to grow, competition is increasing—and many clinics are trying to stand out by adding more equipment, more certifications, or newer modalities. But after helping hundreds of canine rehabpreneurs build their businesses, one thing has become clear: those things don’t create differentiation. In this episode, we explore what truly makes a canine rehab clinic stand out: the experience you design for your clients. Inspired by how Disney builds unforgettable experiences (not just rides), we’ll break down how to move beyond selling modalities and instead create a clear journey, emotional buy-in, and meaningful outcomes that pet parents actually value—and are happy to pay for. Listen to the full episode as we discuss:      🎢 Design Care as a Journey, Not Random Visits Create a clear beginning → milestones → graduation path so clients experience a real story arc instead of vague “let’s see how it goes” plans. 🎯 Personalize Rehab Around Life Goals People don’t buy exercises — they buy their dog’s life back. Connect care to meaningful outcomes like hiking, traveling, and play. 🖐️ Make Education Interactive, Not Overwhelming Replace info-dumps with hands-on demos, visual frameworks, and teach-back moments that improve understanding and buy-in. 💎 Price the Experience, Not the Minutes Stop selling modalities and time. Sell outcomes, expertise, safety, and peace of mind to support premium positioning and sustainability. 🏰 Stand Out by Designing the Full Experience Equipment and credentials don’t differentiate anymore. Your customer journey does. Clinics that intentionally design the experience will win in 2026 and beyond.   The 3rd and new edition of Canine Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation" is now available and you can order your copy using this link! Progress Without Momentum: How to Lead When Business Feels Heavy

Welcome to The K9PT Academy podcast, the only podcast in veterinary rehabilitation & physical therapy that focuses on helping business owners and entrepreneurs build and scale a profitable and successful canine rehabilitation business!  As we have been discussing topics related to planning for 2026, today’s episode focuses on what happens when things don’t go according to plan. Because no matter how solid your strategy is, business will throw curveballs—team changes, market shifts, unexpected setbacks—and those moments can feel deflating if you’re not mentally prepared for them. In this episode, I share a personal story from 2023 when our expansion plans fell apart due to staff turnover, and the mindset shifts that helped me stay grounded, adaptable, and moving forward. We’ll talk about how to keep progressing even when momentum drops, why discipline beats motivation, and how to avoid getting distracted by shiny objects when things feel hard. Listen to the full episode as we discuss:    🔁 Progress Isn’t Linear Business growth comes with ups and downs. A plan changing doesn’t mean you’ve failed—it means you’re adapting and still moving forward. 🧠 Choose Purpose Over Emotion Living from purpose (not just excitement) gives you stability when motivation fades and challenges show up. 🏋️ Discipline Beats Motivation Rely on consistent action over feelings. Motivation comes and goes—discipline is what carries you through tough seasons. 🎯 Protect Your ONE THING Avoid shiny object syndrome. Staying focused on your core business compounds results faster than chasing distractions. 🛠 Build Skills That Pay You More Learning marketing and sales to raise your fees by $50–$100/session often beats spreading yourself thin across side ventures. 🗓️ Let Your Calendar Reflect Your Priorities Progress comes from intentional planning time, not just staying busy. Your schedule should mirror what actually matters. ⏳ Consistency Compounds Real success is built through boring, consistent execution—week after week, quarter after quarter.   The 3rd and new edition of Canine Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation" is now available and you can order your copy using this link!
