Raff's Brain #262: Panic Patrol, Pizza, & the $20 Yoga Surcharge

Raff’s Brain hits the streets of New York City. Recording from Midtown Manhattan, Rob checks in during a visit with the Moving Picture Institute and celebrates the arrival of October by launching his newest creative experiment: Panic Patrol, a short-form historical comedy series about inventions and cultural changes that once inspired genuine public panic. That launches a broader riff on how quickly yesterday’s terrifying innovation can become today’s ordinary life, and whether history might offer some perspective on the apocalyptic language surrounding new technologies today. There are also more urgent matters. Why does a CorePower membership suddenly require another $20 in Manhattan? Can Rob survive New York while trying to eat better? Is a four-dollar bodega coffee actually a triumph of efficiency? And how many slices of New York pizza constitute “moderation”? Rob reports from the front lines. Topics include: Visiting New York City and the Moving Picture InstituteLaunching Panic Patrol on October 1Historical fears surrounding innovation and technological changeThe influence of Pessimists ArchiveMaintaining an exercise routine while travelingThe infamous $20 Manhattan yoga surchargeChoosing convenience over qualityNew York street life and sensory overloadDiet discipline versus New York pizzaThe superiority of the foldable cheese sliceBuilding sustainable health habits through small daily winsUsing history to put modern panic into perspectiveVisit PanicPatrolShow.com to watch the first Panic Patrol dispatches. Raff's Brain #261: My Algorithmic Wellness Overlord Says I’m Improving - HOT YOGA PROBLEMS!

Rob survived CorePower Sculpt. Barely. After an early-morning encounter with burpees, mountain climbers, push-ups, and the general indignities of exercising aggressively in a heated room, Rob discovers something alarming: he might actually be making progress. In this episode of Hot Yoga Problems, he reflects on building momentum, making better everyday choices, dropping five pounds, and discovering that workouts become slightly less catastrophic when you keep showing up. Along the way, there are important detours involving electric skateboards, nineteenth-century circus transportation, Google monitoring his health, Frito pie, imaginary horse-feed bags filled with cauliflower rice, and the unnecessary escalation of perfectly respectable yoga poses. Especially Thread the Needle. Leave Thread the Needle alone. Topics include: • The nightmare known as CorePower Sculpt • Exercise consistency and building momentum • Weight loss and healthier food choices • The difference between progress and perfection • Learning to survive push-ups and cardio • Health tracking and algorithmic accountability • Yoga modifications nobody asked for • Bird Dog, Thread the Needle, and knowing when a pose is already good enough • Why “make better decisions” might be the simplest health strategy of all Five pounds down. Fifty-ish to go. Mission underway. Call the Raff's Brain Hotline! Pick a topic, make a statement, ask a question! 571-408-8058.

Raff's Brain #259: Hot Yoga Problems - Yin Yoga Is a Different Kind of Suffering

Rob voluntarily walks into a Sunday evening yoga class looking for something a little easier. He chooses Yin yoga. This turns out to be a misunderstanding. On this episode of Raff’s Brain: Hot Yoga Problems, Rob recounts his first Core Restore/Yin experience: long-held poses, creeping discomfort, negative self-talk, extremely slow-moving time, and eventually a bizarrely peaceful state in which his consciousness appears to leave the building entirely. The experience becomes another chapter in Rob’s ongoing push to improve his health, exercise consistently, lose weight, and get his blood pressure moving in the right direction. And sometimes progress comes from surprisingly small decisions — like ordering Jimmy John’s and somehow resisting the urge to add a bag of chips. Yes, carrot chips enter the story. Rob also reacts to the Steelers’ win over Cincinnati, looks ahead with his customary unreasonable level of football optimism, and shares more about Panic Patrol, his upcoming AI-assisted comedy series about time travelers investigating historical moments of technological panic. Underneath all the riffs is a recurring idea: discomfort passes, panic has precedent, and maybe the future doesn’t have to be something we fear. Topics include: Yin yoga, Core Restore, navigating discomfort, exercise habits, healthier eating, Jimmy John’s, carrot chips, Steelers football, creative AI tools, historical panic, technological change, Panic Patrol, optimism, and finishing the year strong. Raff's Brain #258: Hot Yoga Problems - Crushed, Vaxxed, & Back in Action!

Rob is back with another episode of Hot Yoga Problems, freshly crushed by a 9:30 a.m. class and contemplating one of yoga’s recurring themes: transitions. After his second shingles vaccine wipes out most of Friday and causes him to miss both a sculpt class and his preferred early Saturday yoga session, Rob nearly writes off the weekend. Instead, he pivots to a later class — a small decision that becomes the episode’s larger point. Plans get disrupted. Routines break. Sometimes the useful move is simply finding the next available opening instead of declaring the whole thing ruined. Naturally, getting there requires several classic Raff’s Brain detours: carrying an irresponsible number of grocery bags in one trip, the cost of blueberries, chaotic Saturday drivers, a U-Haul towing another U-Haul, attempts to understand shingles biology, and an argument that shingles desperately needs a more intimidating name. Rob also previews Panic Patrol, a new AI-powered comedy and edutainment video experiment arriving in October. A sweaty, wandering meditation on disrupted routines, imperfect comebacks, seasonal change, and appreciating the absurd little things happening around us. Call the Raff's Brain Hotline! The Grocery Bag Challenge — Why taking two trips is apparently a personal failure. The Problem With 9:30 Yoga — Early classes work. Mid-morning classes feel completely arrhythmic. Transitions on the Mat — Floating, hopping, skipping, and confronting the limits of gravity. The Vaccine Detour — Rob’s second shingles shot derails Friday and almost derails Saturday too. Raff's Brain #257: Hot Yoga Problems - Step, Hop, or Flop to the Top!

Rob emerges from another hot yoga class with not one, but several revelations—including the disturbing possibility that he’s been doing pigeon pose wrong for roughly a decade. A well-timed hands-on adjustment changes the entire posture, prompting a larger realization: no matter how long you practice yoga, there always seems to be something new to learn. Then comes the real lesson of the day: transitions matter. Rob has spent years treating the trip from downward-facing dog to the top of the mat as something to survive. Step, hop, float—whatever. Just get there. But today’s class focuses on controlling the transition itself, requiring a level of abdominal strength and body awareness that transforms Rob’s elegant “float” into something closer to a “flop.” Beyond the yoga mechanics, the episode becomes a reflection on progress, accountability, and habit formation. Rob is trying to make consistent exercise part of his identity—something so normal that eventually not doing it feels strange. There may never be a final destination in yoga. There’s always another adjustment, another transition, another barrier, and another chance to get slightly less terrible at pigeon pose. Episode highlights: Discovering a better way into pigeon poseThe value of hands-on instruction and small physical adjustmentsWhy familiar yoga poses can still produce new discoveriesLearning to focus on transitions instead of destinationsAttempting to “float” to the top of the matDeveloping core strength and movement controlExercise as an accountability practiceBuilding consistency until the habit becomes automaticAccepting that personal growth doesn’t really have a finish lineCall the Raff's Brain Hotline! Raff's Brain #256: HOT YOGA PROBLEMS - The Slugs Have Entered the Studio!

Another morning. Another 100-degree room. Another voluntary beatdown. Raff is back for Day 5 of his latest hot yoga run, fresh off a recovery day after four consecutive CorePower sessions. This time it’s Yoga Sculpt, where the weights may be light but the suffering is apparently world-class. The fitness push has a little more urgency behind it these days. A recent conversation about high blood pressure gave Raff another reason to stop treating exercise like an occasional hobby and start treating it like something that simply has to happen. But recovery creates its own problems. The moment Raff realizes he isn’t exercising for the day, his brain begins negotiating: maybe a little popcorn is fine. Maybe some snacks. Maybe tomorrow’s workout cancels everything out. And that sends the episode down an entirely different road. Soon, Raff is breaking down the relative merits of popcorn, potato chips, pretzels, Doritos, Chex Mix, rye chips, tiny breadsticks, and the fundamental injustice of being forced to accept someone else’s preferred snack ratio. His solution? Fully personalized snack mixes, ordered online and delivered directly to your house by drone. Another billion-dollar idea, freely released into the universe. Also discussed: Taking a rest day after four consecutive yoga sessionsFinding a sustainable exercise rhythmHealth motivation versus fitness motivationFeeling wildly out of shape in Yoga SculptThe psychology of “earning” junk food with exercisePopcorn as a supposedly responsible snack choiceWhy mixed snacks improve with ageThe perfect personalized Chex MixRaff’s ongoing ability to connect yoga, food, economics, and the Pittsburgh SteelersMaking exercise part of your identity by continuing to show upThe body hurts.
