    In his 1993 memoir, the American naturalist Robert Pyle wrote of a "cycle of loss and disaffection" alienating people from nature and furthering the destruction of our ecosystems. His term - "the extinction of experience" -  aims to capture the essence of our modern relationship with the natural world.
