What it is like to own a McDonald's Franchise - The Michael Rodewald Story

McDonald’s Restaurant Franchise in Montcalm County Discover how Michael Rodewald of MLW Management Inc. built a 11-location McDonald’s franchise network across Montcalm County and West Michigan. The Story of MLW Management: Building a Legacy in Montcalm County When people see the famous Golden Arches of McDonald’s, they often think of a global corporate giant. But on the local level, individual restaurants are driven by local business owners, local crews, and deep roots in the community. On the latest episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, host Duane Weed sat down with Michael Rodewald, Owner/Operator of MLW Management, Inc., to discuss his family’s multi-generational history with McDonald’s, expanding across West Michigan, and opening his 11th location in Howard City, MI. From Crew Member to McDonald’s Franchisee: The Rodewald Family Journey A Legacy That Started in 1974 The Rodewald family story with McDonald’s spans over five decades. It began when Michael’s father, Eric Rodewald, moved to Grand Rapids as a 16-year-old looking for a gas station job. When no gas stations were hiring, he walked into a local McDonald’s on the north side of Grand Rapids. Starting as a crew member, Eric spent 23 years learning every position in restaurant operations and management. In 1996, he realized his dream of entrepreneurship by purchasing his first group of McDonald’s franchises in Montcalm County. Operating MLW Management, Inc. Across Montcalm County and West Michigan Michael Rodewald officially became an approved McDonald’s owner-operator on October 1, 2014, taking over his first store in Stanton, MI. McDonald’s maintains rigorous vetting and operational training for franchisees, ensuring that operators prioritize local community relationships alongside operational excellence. Today, Michael leads MLW Management, Inc., overseeing 11 locations across Montcalm, Mecosta, Isabella, and Ionia counties: Big Rapids: 1020 S State St, Big Rapids, MI 49307 Howard City: 750 Shaw St, Howard City, MI 49329 Lakeview: 9150 Howard City Edmore Rd, Lakeview, MI 48850 Edmore: 807 Main St, Edmore, MI 48829 Stanton: 329 E Main St, Stanton, MI 48888 Portland: 1432 E Grand River Ave, Portland, MI 48875 Mount Pleasant (4 Locations): 1804 S Mission St, Mount Pleasant, MI 48858 1963 E Remus Rd, Mount Pleasant, MI 48858 5600 E Pickard St, Mount Pleasant, MI 48858 904 E Pickard St, Mount Pleasant, MI 48858 Shepherd: 550 E Wright Ave, Shepherd, MI 48883 Bringing a New McDonald’s to Howard City Opening a new ground-up location requires extensive demographic and traffic analytics from corporate, combined with local municipal collaboration. Discussions for a Howard City location began years prior with village leadership. On June 25, the brand-new Howard City store officially held its grand opening at 750 Shaw St. From supporting local high school sports programs—like donating soccer equipment to Tri County High School during their grand opening—to giving back to community initiatives, MLW Management focuses on local involvement. “At the end of the day, the ones who are here trying to get it right for you are local business owners doing everything we can to deliver on our promises,” says Rodewald. From Blue Mohawks to Classical Ballet: The Story of Flat River Dance Company with Joseph Curry

Flat River Dance Company – Joseph Curry When you think of classical ballet instruction, your mind might not immediately picture a teenager with a bright blue mohawk listening to punk rock. But for Joseph Curry, co-owner and artistic director of Flat River Dance Company in Greenville, Michigan, that exact non-traditional start paved the way for an international professional dance career. In the latest episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, host Duane Weed sat down with Joseph Curry to explore his journey from high school backstage stagehand to touring professional dancer, and ultimately to studio owner right here in Montcalm County. Flat River Dance Company: A Global Journey That Led to Montcalm County Joseph’s dance career spans prestigious institutions including the Pittsburgh Ballet, Point Park Conservatory, University of North Carolina School of the Arts, and Charlotte Ballet (formerly North Carolina Dance Theater). After performing on global stages as far as Japan, family brought Joseph and his wife Miranda to West Michigan. In 2008, an opportunity arose to purchase an established dance studio in Greenville from long-time owner Marcie Ann Layson. Embracing the community, Joseph and Miranda took over the reins to establish what is now Flat River Dance Company. Flat River Dance Company: Performance Over Competition – A Unique Approach to Local Dance Unlike many modern studios focused heavily on competitive trophies, Flat River Dance Company prioritizes a theatrical, performance-based philosophy. “We describe ourselves as a recreational program with a strong emphasis on ballet training,” explains Curry. “We approach it from our motto: to educate and entertain, to innovate and create, to define our times and reflect our past through the discipline of dance.” By focusing on classical fundamentals, contemporary, jazz, pointe work, and hip-hop, the school prepares young dancers for full-length theatrical productions while fostering self-confidence, structure, and teamwork. Flat River Dance Company: Summer Dance Programs in Greenville, MI Flat River Dance Company (Dance Schedule) offers structured year-round instruction alongside popular summer youth camps designed for ages 3 and up: Ballet Boot Camp: Advanced technique, pointe work, and classical variations. Superhero & Princess Camps: Fun introductory dance for ages 3–7. Momentum Dance Intensive: A comprehensive two-week workshop featuring ballet, jazz, contemporary, and social activities. Inside the Michigan Maker Summit with Blake Sanborn

Michigan Maker Summit – the modern maker movement The modern maker movement has transitioned from an informal network of hobbyists into a legitimate driver of independent manufacturing and product prototyping. In a recent corporate strategy segment, media producer Duane Weed sat down with Blake Sanborn to evaluate the systemic value that public maker spaces bring to regional commercial districts.  For up-to-date information go to michiganmakersummit.com Michigan Maker Summit – building a community Blake Sanborn highlights the progression of the semi-annual Michigan Maker Summit, emphasizing that a successful technical community relies on accessible infrastructure. By providing centralized access to high-cost machinery—such as industrial fiber lasers, 3D scanners, and advanced printing components—local centers mitigate the capital risks typically facing early-stage hardware developers. This shared-resource model fosters localized teamwork, accelerates corporate prototyping phases, and provides small business owners with the exact technical competencies needed to scale operations. Organizations, companies or individuals looking to establish technological pipelines can view ongoing framework developments online at michiganmakersummit.com. The Origins of the Montcalm Community College's Heritage Village with Gary Hauck

Montcalm Community College – History of Heritage Village Walk onto the campus of Montcalm Community College (MCC), look to the west, and you’ll find yourself stepping directly backward in time. Nestled right on the college grounds is the MCC Heritage Village—a pristine, living history collection that captures the architectural and cultural soul of late 19th-century Montcalm County. On this episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, host Duane Weed welcomes back prolific local author, educator, and historian Gary Hauck. Together, they explore the remarkable grassroots history of the village, an autonomous site that grew from a simple, temporary commemorative concept into an expanding landmark boasting over 25 historical structures. MCC Heritage Village: Rescuing Architecture from “Progress” The seeds of the village were planted in the mid-1970s and early 1980s when local historical structures faced destruction in the name of modernization. The college was initially offered the 1860 Shoen Log House from Crystal, followed closely by the late-1800s Gaffield Schoolhouse out of Amble. College administration initially questioned what an educational institution would do with a log home. However, a brilliant alignment of events occurred in 1986. MCC Trustee Bob Marston, who concurrently served on the Michigan Sesquicentennial Committee, proposed a visionary idea: What if the college accepted, moved, and preserved these buildings as its official contribution to the state’s 150th anniversary celebration in 1987? Dr. Don Burns, the college president at the time, enthusiastically agreed. The schoolhouse was transported on a massive flatbed truck, while the log cabin was painstakingly dismantled log-by-log and reassembled on campus. MCC Heritage Village The Blueprint for a Living History Village What was meant to be a standalone, single-year tribute quickly transformed into a long-term passion project. Four visionary local women—Hazel Smith, Rosemary Long, Maxine Harris, and Mildred Meijan—visited the White Pine Historical Village in Ludington and returned with an ambitious proposal for Dr. Burns: expand the site into a permanent, volunteer-led village celebrating historic architecture from all over Montcalm County. With the college’s blessing, an autonomous volunteer committee took the reins, establishing a comprehensive master plan. Over the following decades, the complex expanded structure by structure: The General Store: Originally built downtown in Sidney by Lem Fish in the early 1900s, it was relocated to the campus in 1989. The Sidney Town Hall: Funded entirely by the Sidney State Bank to ensure its preservation. The Entrican School Foyers: Rescued and beautifully refurbished into a vintage barber shop and millinery hat shop. The Doctor’s House: A stunning 1910 home originally located in Stanton, giving modern visitors a literal walkthrough of early 20th-century medical residential life. MCC Heritage Village Train Robberies and Stolen Gravestones Beyond the beautifully restored wood and stone, the Heritage Village is home to some genuinely eccentric historical lore. Take the train depot, which honors the community of McBride (or McBrides, depending on which local generation you consult). Parked right outside is a majestic 1920 locomotive engine. Originally tracked down at the Coopersville depot, the community raised roughly $40,000 via bake sales and spaghetti dinners to move the non-operable engine via rail and truck. Years later, organizers discovered a thrilling secret: the engine had been directly involved in a historic, high-profile Canadian train robbery! Then there is the church courtyard cemetery. While it contains authentic, beautifully preserved 19th-century headstones, there are zero actual bodies buried on the property. One notable headstone belonging to a woman named Hannah Dickinson was found anonymously sitting on a resident’s back porch steps in Sheridan. Years later, a docent telling this story discovered that a visitor in the back row was Hannah’s direct great-grandson, solving a decades-old mystery of a headstone that had been stolen from a completely different local cemetery. MCC Heritage Village Experiencing the Legacy Every August, the first weekend of the month marks the annual Heritage Village Festival. Docents don authentic period garb, campfires cook fresh bread, Civil War reenactors set up camp, and local children attend vintage class sessions completely free of modern digital distractions. For educators like Duane Weed, who routinely takes his digital media students from the Career Center to practice framing and camera work among the vintage structures, the village is an irreplaceable community treasure. It serves as a stark reminder of what can be accomplished when a community chooses preservation over demolition. To dive deeper into the individual stories behind all 25+ structures, you can find Gary Hawk’s commissioned book, The Story of Heritage Village, on Amazon.
