    IM Exploring: How Montcalm Community College Connects 7th Graders with AI and Future Careers

    Preparing 7th Graders for the Future: AI & Careers at Montcalm Community College Preparing the next generation for the modern workforce requires introducing them to tools and technologies that are actively reshaping every industry. Because educators are preparing students for careers that may not even exist yet, career exploration must begin well before high school graduation. On a recent episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, host Duane Weed and co-host Stephen Rainwater (Business Growth Engine) welcomed Kevin Wagemaker and Steve from Montcalm Community College (MCC) to discuss an ambitious regional initiative: “IM Exploring: AI and Careers.”  Discover Montcalm Podcast is produced by DW Video. Born from a Local Brainstorm at Montcalm Community College The concept began during a planning breakfast at Margo’s in Greenville. Looking for ways to bring artificial intelligence and technology awareness to the community, MCC leaders partnered with local K-12 educators across Montcalm and Ionia counties. State guidelines under the Michigan Career Development Model emphasize that formal career exploration should start during middle school. Recognizing that 7th grade is a pivotal age when curiosity and self-discovery take off, MCC designed an event specifically for this age group. A Professional Conference Experience for Middle Schoolers in Montcalm and Ionia Counties Scheduled for November 10, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at MCC’s Sidney campus, “IM Exploring” is structured to give students the authentic feel of a professional conference: Keynote Presentation: Students will hear from Ben Talsma of the Van Andel Institute, who brings deep expertise in engaging K-12 students with emerging technology. Breakout & Demo Stations: Rather than passively listening to lectures, students will move through self-paced indoor and outdoor demonstration spaces. College Campus Immersion: For many attending 7th graders, this event marks their first visit to a higher education campus, demystifying the college experience. Interactive Demonstrations Across Real-World Industries To illustrate that artificial intelligence and technology touch every profession, MCC has curated an expansive lineup of hands-on exhibits: Public Safety & Law Enforcement: The Michigan State Police are bringing specialized units, including marine division gear and bomb squad robotics. Student Peer Innovation: Dr. Adamson and middle school STEM students from Tri County will showcase practical robotics and AI projects they have built in the classroom. Agriculture & Aviation: Drone demonstrations by Flying Acres and modern agricultural tech displays will show how automation and imaging assist family farms and commercial operations. Trades, Design & Commerce: Local representatives from architecture, building trades, real estate, manufacturing, tool and die, and insurance agencies will demonstrate how automation handles mundane tasks so human workers can focus on higher-level problem solving. Practical AI Literacy: A 5-Step Framework During the podcast, Steve outlined a practical five-step roadmap for anyone looking to understand and apply AI effectively: Identify the Problem: Clearly define what challenge you need to solve. Provide Context: Feed relevant background information into your prompt so the tool understands the assignment. Maintain Data Awareness: Exercise caution and discretion regarding what private or sensitive information you feed into public models. Validate Results: Critically evaluate the response against personal expertise and credible external sources rather than blindly trusting the output. Iterate and Refine: Treat AI as an assistant in an ongoing dialogue, adjusting your prompts to sharpen the outcome.     American Legion Post in Greenville: Community, Care and Veteran Support

    Greenville American Legion: Food, Fun & Veteran Support Many people drive past local veteran posts assuming their doors are locked to everyone except military personnel, but the American Legion in Greenville, Michigan, tells a very different story. On a recent episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, co-hosts Duane Weed  and Kara Stevens (106.3 WGLM) sat down with Jerry from the Greenville American Legion to discuss how the post actively serves veterans, families, and the wider Montcalm County community.  Discover Montcalm Podcast is produced by DW Video. Rooted in Family and Service Established nationally after World War I to reconnect families, friends, and communities separated by military service, the American Legion has evolved into a welcoming community anchor. The organization encompasses five distinct groups: military service veterans (Legionnaires), Sons of the American Legion, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Legion Riders. Yes, the Public Is Welcome! One of the biggest misconceptions Jerry addressed is public access. The community is warmly invited inside to attend events, rent the banquet facility, and enjoy weekly meals. Due to Michigan Liquor Control Commission club license regulations, non-members cannot directly purchase alcohol unless attending designated open-license public events or accompanied by a member, but the post’s food and social gatherings are open to everyone. Friday Dinners, Takeout, and Daily Meals The Greenville post has earned a local reputation for quality, affordable food cooked by volunteer event committees: 1st Friday of the Month: Burrito Night with a variety of freshly made burritos. 2nd Friday of the Month: Burgers, fries, and chicken wings. 3rd Friday of the Month: Special feature night with a rotating menu. 4th Friday of the Month: Traditional Fish Fry. 5th Friday (When Applicable): Unique specialty dinner. In addition to Friday dinners, the post offers a full bar food menu throughout the week and accepts takeout orders during the day. Local diners are encouraged to check the dessert table early during community dinners—especially during the Lions Club’s biannual spaghetti dinners in May and September! Weekly Entertainment and Community Events The post maintains an active social calendar year-round: Sundays: Community Bingo. Tuesdays: Queen of Hearts drawings. Wednesdays: Open music jams followed by line dancing. Thursdays: “Show Me the Money” games (fall, winter, and spring) hosted by the Legion Riders. Community Initiatives: Regular Red Cross blood drives held every two months, pool leagues, live music performances, poker runs, arm wrestling tournaments, Danish Festival activities, and an annual Oktoberfest celebration. Essential Veteran Care and Support Beyond community events and fundraising, the core mission remains supporting those who served. To help local veterans access earned benefits without traveling out of town, an accredited Veteran Service Officer (VSO) visits the post on the third Thursday of every month from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM. This free service allows veterans to bring paperwork, address benefit claims, and resolve service-related concerns right in Greenville rather than driving to the county seat in Stanton. The post also provides a safe, welcoming haven where veterans can talk openly with peers who share military backgrounds or simply relax, watch sports, and connect in a supportive environment. Annual ceremonies—such as the November 11 Veterans Day Post Everlasting tribute and the Memorial Day 11:00 AM wreath laying at the Flat River bridge near the museum—honor those who gave their lives in service.     Hallmark-Style Movie 'Downtown Country' Filmed Howard City and in West Michigan

    Downtown Country movie: Made in Montcalm County Montcalm County has served as the backdrop for countless stories, but rarely does a full-length feature film embrace a local community quite like Downtown Country. On a recent episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, host Duane Weed sat down with producer Joseph Lewandowski to discuss the journey of writing, financing, and producing an independent, Hallmark-style romantic drama right in downtown Howard City, Michigan. Discover Montcalm Podcast is produced by DW Video. Why Howard City? Joseph Lewandowski has worked on numerous film sets throughout his career, but Downtown Country marks the first production he fully bankrolled and directed creatively from start to finish. After moving to downtown Howard City in 2017, Joseph fell in love with the town’s small-town energy and wanted to showcase its ongoing revitalization. Rather than inventing a fictional setting or swapping out signage, he designed the script as an authentic love letter to Howard City. Local storefronts play prominent roles throughout the narrative: The Edgerton Gifterie serves as the aunt’s gift shop where the lead character spends her summer. Edgerton Alley provided the setting for an energetic bowling sequence. The Edge record shop and Tom Kropfnecki’s 210 Music Row served as authentic interior filming locations. Jeanne’s Pizza Cafe served as a filming site, with the film director even stepping in front of the lens to play the counter worker. Local business owners made cameo appearances, including Sherry shopping in her own store and Dan the Record Man appearing in the gift shop. The Storyline and Cast The film follows Sophie Barrett, a college student spending her summer in Howard City helping her aunt. While helping at the shop and navigating a blooming summer romance, Sophie harbors a secret passion for songwriting and music that she has never shared publicly. Lead actress Annalie Eck was cast in November 2025 after Lewandowski heard her singing reels while working on a television project near Detroit. In an art-imitating-life parallel, Eck had never performed live vocals in front of a public audience prior to filming. Her first real-world open mic performance took place during production, bringing genuine emotion and nervous energy directly to the screen. The entire cast and production crew were sourced entirely from Michigan. Regional Production Across West Michigan While Howard City served as the core production anchor, key sequences were filmed within a 30-mile radius across West Michigan: Planet Sunday Studios in Rockford, owned by Joel Ferguson of The Verve Pipe, served as the recording studio where Eck recorded original tracks. The Rockford Start of Summer Celebration provided vibrant carnival rides and festival footage. Grand Rapids locations included a local horse stable, the iconic Blue Bridge downtown, and the historic St. Cecilia Music Center, where the climactic 600-seat theater concert was filmed on August 16. What Lies Ahead Filming wrapped in mid-August 2026 after 12 rigorous shoot dates, averaging 12-hour production days. With the project currently in the editing room targeting a 95-minute runtime, Lewandowski aims to host a local private premiere this winter before presenting the completed feature to digital distributors targeting platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video.     Montcalm County Quality Deer Cooperative

    Community Wildlife Conservation: Montcalm County Quality Deer Cooperative Effective wildlife management goes far beyond hunting season; it requires year-round education, habitat stewardship, and strong community communication. On a recent episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, guest host Kara Stevens (from M106.3 WGLM) sat down with Jeff Antes (President) and Devin Antes (Secretary) of the Montcalm County Quality Deer Cooperative to discuss how their 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supports local land and wildlife.  Discover Montcalm Podcast is produced by Duane Weed at DW Video. From Small Townships to Countywide Impact The cooperative began around 2014 during a statewide movement toward local township co-ops. As several smaller groups formed across Montcalm County, they eventually united under a single umbrella organization, growing into a formal 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Today, the cooperative represents over 200 paid members spanning approximately 16,000 to 18,000 acres, while connecting with over 5,000 local community members across their social media platforms. Beyond Trophy Hunting: Whole-Herd Health Devin Antes highlighted a common misconception about deer cooperatives: “A lot of people feel that it’s all about big bucks and the racks… Deer management is about everything: your does, your age structure, your habitat, and your community.” The group works to balance herd size with the natural carrying capacity of the land. Key focus areas include: Doe Harvesting: Encouraging proper doe management to maintain healthy buck-to-doe ratios and prevent habitat destruction. Habitat Diversity: Teaching landowners how simple tools like hand saws, rakes, and shovels can improve land cover without expensive machinery. Youth & Hunter Safety: Sponsoring free hunter safety courses every July that educate roughly 70 local youth annually. Farmer Partnerships: Working alongside local agricultural producers to address crop damage and promote balanced wildlife coexistence. Feeding Local Families: Venison Donation Program One of the cooperative’s standout community initiatives takes place every December. Rather than sending donated venison statewide, the Montcalm County Quality Deer Cooperative (click here to follow on Facebook) pays for the processing fees out of pocket. The ground venison—totaling around 400 pounds annually—is donated directly to local food pantries and churches to feed families right in Montcalm County. Getting Involved & Annual Big Buck Night The cooperative hosts open monthly meetings from January through July, welcoming all community members, landowners, and outdoor enthusiasts regardless of property size. Their main annual fundraiser, Big Buck Night, takes place every March at the Montcalm County Fairgrounds in Greenville, featuring raffles, door prizes, and local business sponsors.     Supporting Local Seniors: Advocates for Montcalm County Area Seniors Navigating senior care and finding available community resources can feel overwhelming, especially during a sudden family crisis. On an informative episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, host Duane Weed sat down with Diana Farran, Chair of Advocates for Montcalm County Area Seniors, along with board member Deb Fountain (President of the Howard City Senior Action Center), to discuss how their organization helps local seniors navigate care options. The Difference Between Commission on Aging and Advocates Many residents confuse the Montcalm County Commission on Aging with Advocates, but they serve distinct roles: Montcalm County Commission on Aging: A government agency with paid staff and volunteers providing direct services like transportation and in-home care for residents aged 60 and older. Advocates for Montcalm County Area Seniors: An independent 501(c)(3) all-volunteer nonprofit focused on education, outreach, and connecting seniors to available programs across the region. Bridging the Communication Gap When a crisis hits—such as a sudden dementia diagnosis, food insecurity, or needing in-home assistance—families often do not know where to turn. Advocates works to bridge that gap by connecting seniors and family caregivers to agencies like EightCAP, local food programs, tax assistance, and Medicare/Medicaid navigation. The organization also gives back directly to local seniors. In 2026, Advocates provided 340 lunch tickets for seniors attending Senior Day at the Montcalm County Heritage Village Festival and distributed informational goody bags. Funding and Getting Involved Advocates for Montcalm County Area Seniors operates entirely on donations and local fundraising efforts. They distribute educational bookmarks and guides to local libraries, township halls, village offices, and senior centers in Greenville and Howard City. Jaylynn Hiler on Faithful Paws Legacy Nonprofit Animal rescue organizations perform vital work every day, but keeping shelters supplied with food and essential resources remains an ongoing challenge. On a heartwarming episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, host Duane Weed sat down with Lakeview native Jaylynn, founder of the 501(c)(3) nonprofit Faith-ful Paws Legacy, to discuss her mission to support animal shelters across Michigan and beyond. Roots in Montcalm County Growing up in Lakeview, Michigan, Jaylynn was deeply involved in her community from an early age. A 2022 graduate of Lakeview High School, she served as Miss Lakeview 2019, directed the local pageant for two years, and spent over five years coaching youth cheerleading. She also attended the local career center, taking part in education coursework while Duane Weed was on staff. After pursuing studies at Ferris State University in both education and accounting, Jaylynn felt a calling to channel her passion for animals into direct action. The Birth of Faithful Paws Legacy While volunteering at the Animal Rescue Coalition (ARC) of Mecosta County in Big Rapids, Jaylynn realized how much animal shelters rely on volunteer work and community donations. Using her platform as a pageant titleholder—currently holding the title of Miss West Michigan for Miss Northern International—she established Faith-ful Paws Legacy in September 2025. Rather than providing cash grants, the nonprofit focuses on donating vital supplies, food, and care products directly to rescue facilities. During one major donation drive from Georgia back home to Michigan, Faith-ful Paws Legacy delivered nearly 400 pounds of dog food across multiple shelters in five different states. Reaching Communities and Educating Youth Since its inception, Faith-ful Paws Legacy has extended its outreach to 18 of Michigan’s 83 counties and made donations across 16 states. Combining her passion for teaching with animal advocacy, Jaylynn authored and published a children’s activity workbook available on her website. The book features word searches, adoption pledges, and educational activities that teach young children how to responsibly care for pets. Jaylynn also emphasizes the crucial importance of spaying and neutering pets to help manage shelter populations nationwide. Through this personalized coaching, business owners refine their business models, perfect their financial strategies, and gain public speaking confidence. A Transformational $10,000 Grand Prize Through growing corporate sponsorship, MiPitch 2026 will award a transformational $10,000 top cash prize to help the winning entrepreneur expand operations, invest in equipment, or launch new service lines. Secondary cash prizes and community support awards are also presented.
