Hello fellow travellers, in this episode I discuss and appreciate the positive living legacies of slavery in the Cape. One of those heritages include BoKaap, which is a slave descendent islamic community situated above Cape Town's city centre. I offer travel advice on some of the places you can visit and cultural activities you can participate in, that include the BoKaap museum and Tweede Nuwe Jaar carnival. Bokaap is a community that, although, is impacted by the dominant narratives of black vs white, African spirituality vs christianity which have come to define South Africa, it is not defined by them. Therefore, it is an example of how diverse South African society, cultural heritage and religion is. It is not propaganda but a true, lived South African reality. Enjoy! ________________________ Are you planning to travel through Europe soon? Pheladi Presents: "Girl of The House"

Introducing: "Girl of The House" | Journal of a reluctant 2nd-generation family business owner Hello fellow travellers! First of all, let me make it clear, this announcement does not mean I am abandoning "Pheladi Presents South Africa". "Girl of The House" is just another project in the Pheladi Presents universe that communicates a different aspect of my life, behind-the-scenes of this travel podcast. Towards the end of 2022, I was made the co-owner of my family's hospitality business. Since then, I have been struggling to fully embrace my new responsibility. This newsletter and podcast journal was developed to help me work through that hesitation. This episode is actually a recording of one of the journal entries posted on my "Girl of The House" newsletter. I felt it appropriate to also post it on this platform because I believe the information it communicates is relevant to the audience of "Pheladi Presents South Africa". It explains what I have been dealing with behind-the-scenes and how I plan to move forward after this announcement. Also, I think it will also give you a taste of what "Girl of The House" is about. Be prepared, the structure of the "Girl of The House" podcast is completely different from that of this travel podcast. Whereas "Pheladi Presents South Africa" is more casual yet informative; `'Girl of The House" is more scripted and it unfolds like a written personal diary. Another thing that I need to mention is that in the recording I introduce the newsletter and podcast journal as "The Business of [Un]Becoming". However, that is the former name. Following my recording and posting of this audio, I've since changed the name to "Girl of The House". Finally, EXCITING NEWS: In this episode I also mention that I've officially partnered with an international travel company. I'm excited to share the news that the company is Rail Europe. Rail Europe is a trusted online booking platform for European train travel. International travellers planning to travel through Europe by train can book tickets and passes, sold by a variety of rail operators in 35 countries, using Rail Europe's website and app. Their user-friendly website offers a simple and secure booking experience, as well as accepts multiple payment options in different currencies, catering to travellers from all over the world. S3 E4_BONUS | Iziko Slave Lodge_Test Recording

Hello Fellow Travellers! This is for the listeners who are interested in origin stories. When I was still toying with the idea of starting a podcast, I decided to first do some test recordings before committing to producing one. This post is one of the first recordings I created. The first, ever, tested topic was actually the Lydenburg Heads. However, I struggled to produce a complete pseudo-episode on that topic. So, this is officially the first; complete with an intro, body and conclusion. It’s amateurish and raw. As you will hear, at the time of recording it, I hadn’t yet figured out the complete title of the podcast. I also used my cellphone mic to record it. Despite all of that, I believe this recording is where the essence of the podcast was established, and where the skeleton of the final Iziko Slave Lodge episode was conceived. Tell me, can you hear any progress between this original test recording and latest podcast episodes? Disclaimer: Slavery in South Africa did not strictly in occur in the Cape. As the voortrekkers trekked into the interior of the country, they continued the practice of slavery. Between 1834 and the 1850s, they kidnapped African children to perform “cheap, captive labour” (Reader’s Digest, 1992:146) for them. Those enslaved children were referred to as “Inboekselings” (“captured African juveniles”). However, they didn’t consider it as slavery because “to them, a slave was someone who was sold into permanent bondage at a public auction for cash”. “Inboekselings were welcomed additions to the Boer household, performing a variety of activities. Some were used as herdsmen … and the builders of Boer houses” Enjoy!

S3 E4_Iziko Slave Lodge: SA’s Forgotten Past | Cape Town | Western Cape

Exploring the History of Slavery in South Africa | Iziko Slave Lodge & Land Expropriation Act Hello Fellow Travellers! In this episode, I’m making good on promises from the first season. One of those promises was to explore South African destinations that connect to key themes from The Woman King movie, including Portuguese merchants and the transatlantic slave trade. Initially, I planned to discuss Cape Point and the Iziko Slave Lodge, two locations tied to these movie themes, in Season 1. However, due to personal reasons, I couldn’t follow through at the time. Now, in Season 3, I’m starting where I left off—because, as the saying goes, your word is your bond. (1) What You’ll Learn in This Episode: This episode dives into the history of slavery in the Cape (mid-17th to early 19th century) and the role of the Iziko Slave Lodge. Key topics include- 1. The historical significance of the Slave Lodge 2. The origins of slavery in the Cape 3. The brutal conditions enslaved people endured 4. Free commemorative days & museum exhibitions worth visiting (2) Connecting the Past to the Present: In a previous (now deleted) post, I mentioned making connections between South Africa’s history of slavery and today’s debates on the Land Expropriation Act. The second half of this episode explores how the legacy of slavery still influences South Africa’s current land reform challenges. I wrap up this episode with an unexpected rant about national unity and resisting external political influence. Platforms like TikTok reveal a growing debate among white South Africans rejecting Trump’s offer to Afrikaners, while YouTube comment sections show that his influence resonates with many across racial lines. This rant isn’t for everyone—but some South Africans need to hear it. This episode is nearly two hours long—so here’s a tip: listen while cleaning, cooking, or doing other daily tasks. It’ll make the time fly by! Enjoy the episode!
