Sent Out from the Garden

Though he was driven out of the garden because of sin, Adam was sent out with life (Eve). Though God had just pronounced death, we see in Adam a glimmer of hope when he names his wife. In both judgment and grace, God prevented them from eating of the tree of life and living forever. They could not just turn around and do the good work of eating from the tree of life to cover what they had done. Blood would have to be shed, and God would do it first to send them out with an adequate covering. Though they were banished from the garden and the cherubim would guard the way until the flood destroyed the earth, they were sent out with a shadowed commission until the One who could pass through the fire would open up the way to paradise again.

The Curse & The Promise

In God's pronouncement of judgement for sin, He put enmity between the serpent (the Dragon) and the woman (true Israel) [Rev. 12], and also between the seed of the woman (Christ) and the seed of the serpent (the spirit of Antichrist). This enmity was good because it was from God, necessary for redemption, and the foundation of the gospel. Like all other beginnings, the first good news was given in Genesis. The seed of the serpent would deliver a strike to the heel in which Christ was bruised and wounded for our transgressions, but He would deliver a strike to the head of Satan from which he would never recover. In a very real sense, God declared Satan's defeat from the beginning.

Hiding & Blaming

After Adam & Eve's desires met the Serpent's temptation and sin was birthed, Yahweh God came calling and walking in the wind of the day. Scripture's first Theophany/Christophany/Pneumophany is a reminder that God has been pursuing us from the beginning. But the man and woman hide themselves from the Lord, and we see the first sense in which sin separated us from God. When He called out to them, Adam blamed the woman and God Himself; while Eve blamed the serpent. The story of Scripture from the beginning was not one of us confessing our sin and pursuing God, but rather hiding from Him and blaming anyone and everyone. Yet He is such a good Father that He has pursued His children from our very first sin.

The Serpent

How was paradise lost? Though there was good in the tree, the man & woman, and even the serpent once, all had the potentiality for evil within. The serpent was Satan manifest, the devil & dragon whose fall from heaven after his creation is recapitulated during the ministry of Jesus when He sees him fall, and in end when Satan is finally cast down. It was for this reason he was more crafty than all the other wild beasts in the garden, and his schemes consisted of questioning God's Word, then adding restrictions to it, after which he was able to deceive Eve to do the same. Once the serpent knew she was willing to add to God's Word, he knew she would be willing to reject it entirely, as would her husband; and thus, humanity fell through one sin.

The Helper

It wasn't good that man was alone, first because God purposed the earth to be filled with His image, next because He intended the man to be given a complimentary helper of his kind, and finally because through the woman's seed a Savior would come. The helper God gave Adam is only fully understood when childbearing and salvation come together. The mystery of marriage is great, and in the formation, separation, and consummation of man and woman, the shadows of salvation are cast.

Life & the Knowledge of Good & Evil

For Adam, eating of the Tree of Life would preserve the garden paradise of Eden. But hidden in the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil was another world of which Adam had never tasted. The unknown heights and untold lows of all of history lie bound up in that tree unconceivable to the man who never before knew of evil or death. In eating, not only did Adam manifest life outside of paradise, but he would now begin to define good and evil, something only God can truly do. Humanity will begin to try and do what only God can and be who only God is. Jesus' death on the tree demonstrated that though we were the ones who somehow brought the greatest evil out of the greatest good, He somehow brought the greatest good out of the greatest evil.

A Garden of Life

Our story begins with a contrast of the desert wilderness and the garden paradise, a theme that will recapitulate throughout Scripture. God's people would come out of the practically-unlivable wilderness of Sinai into the Promised Land, just as Adam was formed from the dust of the earth and taken into the paradise of Eden. Waters of life flowed from Eden, just as they would flow from the temple in Ezekiel's vision, and from the throne in John's to water the tree of life on both sides of the streets of gold from the land we see in the beginning and later used to build the tabernacle and temple. The paradise of the garden was the imagery Jesus was conjuring up for the thief on the cross when he asked to be remembered when He entered His kingdom, and was told he would be with Him in "Paradise." For us who believe, the paradise of the cultivated garden city is where we will live with God forever in our earthly heaven.

From Ground & Breath

When the earth was mostly desert, God watered the whole surface of the ground from below and formed man from the mud. Our origins were humble, but as clay shaped by the hands of the potter, we were formed as vessels with purpose. And when God breathed into Adam the breath of life, he was animated as living clay. In Yahweh breathing the breath of life into Adam’s nostrils, we have a shadow of eternal life, in which the Spirit of God imparts life not merely into our nostrils and then lungs (the outer man), but into our minds and hearts (the inner man).
