Did Rex Heflin photograph a real UFO in 1965?/ We take a deep dive into one of the most famous UFO photo cases in history

Send us Fan Mail Season 1 Episode 32.  On this Summer rerun episode of UFO Talker, host Michael Ryan and commentator Christine Scott take a deep dive into one of the most famous and controversial UFO photo cases ever documented—the Rex Heflin photographs of August 3, 1965. For more than half a century, the four photographs taken by Orange County road maintenance worker Rex Heflin near Santa Ana, California, have been debated by believers, skeptics, scientists, military investigators, and some of the biggest names in UFO research. Were these images evidence of a genuine unidentified flying object, or was there another explanation? Michael and Christine examine the case from the beginning, including: • The events of August 3, 1965, when Heflin photographed a disc-shaped object from his maintenance truck. • The location of the sighting near the Marine Corps Air Station at El Toro. • The Polaroid camera Heflin used and why it played an important role in later photographic analysis. • Reports of unusual radio interference at the time of the sighting. • Witness descriptions of a rotating light within the object that are rarely discussed today. • Investigations conducted by the U.S. Air Force, Marine Corps personnel, NICAP, and other UFO researchers. • The involvement of noted scientist Dr. James McDonald and researcher Anne Druffel. • Project Blue Book's controversial conclusion that the photographs were a hoax. • Claims that the object was merely a thrown hubcap or pie plate—and why later analysis challenged those explanations. • The mysterious disappearance of Heflin's original photographs after being taken by men claiming to be military investigators. • The equally mysterious return of the original photographs nearly three decades later. • Modern photographic and computer analyses that suggest the object's reported size, distance, and position were consistent with Heflin's original account. The episode also explores the possibility that the famous UFO seen in the television series The Invaders may have been inspired by the Heflin photographs, and discusses why these images remain among the most iconic UFO photographs ever taken. Was Rex Heflin an honest witness who captured something extraordinary, or is there another explanation waiting to be discovered? Join us as we revisit one of the most enduring mysteries in UFO history. A Manitoba Farmer Reported a UFO and a Humanoid/ The RCMP and Canadian Military Investigated

Send us Fan Mail Season 3 Episode 11. As part of UFO Talker's Summer "Best Of" Repeat Series, we revisit one of the most fascinating and little-known Canadian UFO encounters on record. On October 24, 1970, near MacGregor, Manitoba, a young farmer named Gerald Adams reported an extraordinary experience that would eventually attract the attention of the RCMP, the Canadian Military, and the National Research Council of Canada. According to Adams, what began as the observation of a strange object in the night sky soon evolved into something far more remarkable. Returning to the location after dropping off his girlfriend, Adams reported encountering a landed UFO and observing a small humanoid figure wearing what appeared to be a metallic silver suit and helmet. He would later state that he approached to within approximately fifty feet of both the object and the figure. The case was taken seriously enough that Adams was interviewed by Captain G.M. Winterburn of the Canadian Forces Operations Centre. The interview was recorded on reel-to-reel tape, and correspondence involving the RCMP and government scientists followed. Questions remain to this day about missing RCMP documentation connected to the investigation and whether the original military recordings still exist. In this episode, host Michael Ryan and commentator Christine Scott examine the original documents, witness statements, military correspondence, and the unanswered questions that continue to surround one of Manitoba's most intriguing UFO cases. David Oranchak, the man who cracked the Zodiac Killer's 340 Cipher, decodes a UFO message and weighs in on alien symbols and hidden codes.

Send us Fan Mail Summer Rerun Series.  This episode is from Season 3 Episode 27.  The Zodiac Killer's infamous 340 Cipher remained unsolved for more than 51 years. Governments, intelligence agencies, professional cryptologists, and amateur codebreakers all attempted to solve it. In December 2020, a three-person team finally succeeded. One of those team members was cryptologist and software developer David Oranchak. In this episode of UFO Talker, David joins host Michael Ryan to discuss the fascinating world of cryptology, the story behind the Zodiac 340 Cipher, and what it was like to help solve one of the most famous unsolved codes in modern history. The conversation then takes an unexpected turn into ufology. In 1976, a coded message arrived at the offices of Official UFO Magazine. The letter contained a series of strange symbols and was never deciphered. Nearly fifty years later, former editor Bernie O'Connor provided a copy of the mysterious cipher to UFO Talker. David Oranchak accepted the challenge. Using modern codebreaking techniques, David successfully decoded the message and explains exactly how he did it. He walks listeners through the methods used to solve substitution ciphers, the role of frequency analysis, and the surprising message hidden within the decades-old document. Michael and David also explore a larger question that has fascinated UFO researchers for decades: if a genuine extraterrestrial message were ever discovered, would humans actually be capable of decoding it? Topics discussed include: • The Zodiac Killer and the famous 340 Cipher • How cryptologists break difficult codes • The Bernie Official UFO Cipher • Frequency analysis and substitution ciphers • The Rendlesham Forest symbols • Whether UFO symbols could ever be translated • The challenges of deciphering an unknown language • The Rosetta Stone and lessons from history This episode offers a fascinating look at the intersection of cryptology, mystery, and the UFO phenomenon. The Island Lake Incident — Retired RCMP Sergeant Craig Cochrane Investigates the 1981 Case of a Family of Five Chased by a UFO Near Garden Hill, Manitoba

Send us Fan Mail Summer "Best of" repeat Series.  This episode originally aired May 14, 2025.  Season 3 Episode 29.  Host Michael Ryan interviews retired RCMP Sergeant Craig Cochrane about one of the most compelling UFO cases ever investigated in Northern Manitoba—the Island Lake Incident. On the night of October 3, 1981, Albert Punch, his wife, and their three children were travelling by small boat near Island Lake when their quiet evening took a terrifying turn. A massive UFO, estimated to be nearly 200 feet in diameter, appeared and pursued the family's boat for more than 30 minutes across the dark waters. According to the witnesses, whenever the mysterious object moved too close, the boat's motor would suddenly fail, leaving the family vulnerable and frightened as the huge craft hovered nearby. The encounter would become one of the most intriguing UFO reports ever investigated in the region. Sergeant Cochrane recounts his investigation into the case, the challenges of gathering evidence in remote northern communities, and what it was like serving as an RCMP officer in some of Manitoba's most isolated locations. He also shares his thoughts on the credibility of the witnesses and why the Island Lake Incident remains a memorable case more than four decades later. A fascinating look at a little-known Canadian UFO encounter that continues to raise questions to this day. Support the show To buy UFO Talker merchandise follow this link here.
