Season 2 Ep4: UK Teacher Moves to Regional Western Australia: Life in Geraldton, Incentives & Work–Life Balance

We’re recording live from the van in Geraldton, Western Australia (WA’s Midwest) — and in this episode we’re joined by Nina, a UK secondary teacher who moved to the small and remote Western Australia town, Geraldton.Nina breaks down what it’s actually like relocating to regional WA as an overseas-qualified teacher: how the WA Government recruitment process works, what support is available (including relocation and housing help), and the realities of paperwork (police checks, qualification evidence, transcripts… the lot). We also chat about lifestyle in Geraldton, ocean swims, diving trips up north (Ningaloo/Shark Bay), and why WA’s climate and work-life balance can feel very different to the UK — and even the East Coast of Australia. If you’re wondering what it's like as a British teacher in Australia, or even how to become a teacher in Australia from UK, this one’s packed with practical insights and honest takeaways.Follow Nina on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ninalovesthewater/ WA Government – Teachers from overseas (how to apply):https://www.education.wa.edu.au/teachers-from-overseas_____________________________________________________________ Follow us for daily updates: - Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thelondonerinsydney/- TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@londonerinsydney - YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@LondonerInSydney- Read our free travel guides and expat tips for moving to Australia: https://londonerinsydney.com/- Listen to our podcast on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4fhCapTte76VGRqlgwuvyP_____________________________________________________________Watch more of our living in Australia videos on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLGVxAhrCJc&t=28shttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNmPZDz66C4&t=254shttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r15r2bcHk9Y&t=52shttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWXFWzWskrc&t=1shttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gcZpooIFEc&t=588s

Season 2 Ep3: Emma’s Back: What's Life Like in Margaret River 15 Months Later?

What happens after the big lap ends, the boxes are unpacked, and the “new life” becomes everyday life? In this episode of The Expat Reality Podcast, Annie and Steve sit down in person with returning guests Emma and Kieran (watch Emma's previous episode here) to hear what the last 15 months have really been like since their move from Sydney to Margaret River, Western Australia. We talk about the shift from feeling like a visitor to becoming a resident, why community doesn’t magically appear when you relocate, and the practical steps they took to build connection, purpose, and belonging. Emma shares how volunteering (including community pantry work and local conservation initiatives) opened doors into the community, and Kieran explains why he launched a local chapter of Tough Guy Book Club as a way to tackle male loneliness and create a simple, structured space for men to connect. Along the way, we cover the realities of expat friendship-making, the lifestyle contrast between big-city living and a smaller regional town, and the unexpected ways place, values, and life stage shape what “settled” actually means. If you’re considering a move, feeling stuck in the in-between, or wondering how to find your people in Australia, this one will resonate. We accidentally lost the video recording of this podcast episode so there's no video for this one sorry! Season 2 Ep 1: From Love Island to Being Kicked Out & Banned from Australia — Nathan Joseph’s Story

Trigger warning: This episode includes discussion of suicidal ideation. What happens when you build a life in Australia, and then you’re told you have to leave? In this episode, we sit down with Nathan Joseph (yes, that Nathan — Love Island alum turned massive online fitness and mental health voice) to talk about a side of expat life most people don’t see… until it happens to them. Nathan shares how his move to Australia started during one of the hardest periods of his life, and why Australia felt like a reset he genuinely needed. We talk about the mental health “toolbox” he built to stay on track, what helped him cope day to day, and why being open about it now matters so much — especially for men. And then we get into the part that still feels unbelievable: Nathan was effectively kicked out of Australia after a chain of visa decisions during Covid, including a refused application and the fallout from a past incident that became a major problem later. He explains what happened, what the ban actually means, and what it feels like to lose a country you thought you’d live in forever — including possibly missing his best mate’s wedding in Byron Bay. We also talk about what he did after Australia: the months that broke him, why he quit drinking for 16 months, how he rebuilt his life and business from the UK, and how he’s grown a community of hundreds of thousands by being brutally honest about food, fitness, and what “healthy” actually means. If you’ve ever wondered how fragile the visa process can be, or you’ve felt like Australia became home before it was technically “safe” — you’re going to feel this one. 5. Season 2 Intro Ep: Two Dogs, No Jobs, and a Very Big Country

    JAN 4

Season 2 Intro Ep: Two Dogs, No Jobs, and a Very Big Country

We’re back! We’re finally kicking off Season 2 of The Expat Reality Podcast, and a lot has happened since you last heard from us. In this first episode, we’re catching you up on where we’ve been, what we’ve been doing, and why this season feels like the most important one we’ve made so far. We’ve quit our jobs, added a second dog to the family (turns out two dogs is a lot), travelled through Fiji and Thailand, gone back to the UK for the first time in six years, and somehow managed to squeeze in a two-month, 15,000-kilometre road trip around Australia in a motorhome. Neither of us had ever lived in a motorhome before. We didn’t really know what we were doing. We learned fast. That trip took us through Western Australia, Northern Territory, and South Australia through remote towns, tiny pubs in the middle of nowhere, and places most people never see when they move to Australia. Along the way, we interviewed expats living very different lives — backpackers, teachers, people working in the mines, couples who stayed, and others already thinking about leaving. This episode sets the tone for the whole season. We talk honestly about what surprised us, what scared us, what nearly went very wrong, and what we learned about life in Australia when you get far away from the cities. We also talk about money, because yes — travelling Australia is expensive, but not in the way people think. If you’re thinking about moving to Australia, already living here and wondering whether it really feels like home yet, or just want a more honest take on expat life beyond the highlight reel, you’re in the right place. This season is about the reality of it all — the good bits, the hard bits, and the moments that make you stop and ask where you actually belong. We’re so glad you’re here. Let’s get into Season 2. Episode 15: Can we truly settle down as expats or travellers? How to find your place in Australia.

We loved recording this episode as we dive into the other side of expat life, a side that is often overlooked. While moving abroad can feel like a fresh start, we discuss whether expats are generally happier leading an expat life, as grief and guilt leaving loved ones behind often catches up with us over time. We chat about what some of our followers told us about their current dilemmas as expats in Australia, and we also discuss how our love for travel has shaped our path for trying to fit into the 9-5 lifestyle and as an expat trying to fit into living in a new country. Listen to the end as we talk about towns and cities we have considered moving to in Australia (and tips for how to decide where to live regionally vs in a city), as well as tips for how to embrace life as an expat and live each day to the fullest, if you’re feeling unsettled, like many of us are. Episode 14: How to Cope with Expat guilt with Amy Butters

We chat to Amy Butters, a British expat who feels like the ‘guiltiest expat’ alive. When you become an expat, it’s not unheard of to feel a sense of guilt and grief when leaving loved ones back home. Over the years, we all have to learn how to accept our new lives living in another country, while learning that life is continuing on without us back home. So, in this episode, we chat to Amy who just returned back from UK after a whirlwind trip home. Fresh off the plane, Amy explains what it was like visiting friends and family in January of all months. We talk about what life is like back home right now, how her friends and family are dealing with the energy crisis and how she feels being back in Australia. Listen right to the end because we discuss about why we should all be appreciating each and every day like we’re only living the expat life for a short period of time.
