Season 9 Episode 6 Club de Lectura: The Dangers of Smoking in Bed

On this week's episode we have our book club episode on The Dangers of Smoking in Bed by Mariana Enriquez Across twelve stories, Enríquez introduces us to dead babies who won’t stay dead, teenage girls experimenting with supernatural forces, missing children who mysteriously return, obsessive fandom taken to horrifying extremes, witches, ghosts, curses, diseased hearts, troubled women, Ouija boards and a Buenos Aires where the boundary between ordinary life and nightmare can disappear without warning. But underneath all the supernatural horror is something much more real. These stories are haunted by Argentina itself. We talk about the history and social conditions lurking beneath Enríquez’s horror: inequality and poverty, misogyny and violence against women, urban decay, Argentina’s dictatorship and the cultural memory of the desaparecidos, and the people society would often rather ignore: the poor, the missing, the disturbed, the unwanted and the dead.We also get into the women and girls at the center of these stories. We are looking at the collection through the lens of ancestry and historical memory. In “Angelita Unearthed,” a forgotten baby buried generations earlier literally returns to haunt her family. In “The Well,” terror moves through generations of women in the same family. “Kids Who Come Back” transforms missing children into something supernatural and horrifying. And in “Back When We Talked to the Dead,” teenage girls attempt to communicate with Argentina’s disappeared through a Ouija board. Again and again, Enríquez returns to the same disturbing possibility:You can bury something without actually getting rid of it. Families can stop telling a story. Governments can erase people from records. Cities can build over violence. Communities can learn not to ask questions. Generations can inherit fears without understanding where they began. But forgetting doesn’t necessarily make the past disappear. For genealogists, that’s an especially uncomfortable idea. We spend so much time trying to uncover what was lost: breaking through brick walls, finding forgotten relatives, correcting family stories and discovering the people behind names in old records. But what if the thing your family buried was buried for a reason? And when we say we want to know everything about our ancestors…do we actually mean everything?Join us as we talk about the stories that fascinated us, the ones that completely creeped us out, etc. Because sometimes the scariest thing hiding in the family tree isn’t a ghost. It’s the truth. Content note: This episode and the book discuss disturbing material including death, child death and disappearance, violence, sexual content, self-harm, abuse, suicide, body horror, poverty, misogyny and Argentina’s history of political violence and disappearance. Season 9 Episode 5 Las Vidas Increíbles de Las Monjas

On this week's episode, we’re joined by genealogy educator, writer and author Sunny  Morton to explore one of the most fascinating (and frequently overlooked) corners of family history: researching Catholic nuns and sisters. Sunny joins us to discuss her book, Searching for Sisters: A Guide to Researching Catholic Nuns in the United States, which offers researchers a roadmap for finding women whose lives in religious communities can make them unusually difficult to follow through traditional genealogical sources. Women religious might have taken new names, relocated far from their families and lived within institutions whose records aren’t sitting in the databases genealogists search every day. But disappearing from the usual genealogical paper trail doesn’t mean they didn’t leave records. Sunny walks us through the process of figuring out whether an ancestor actually entered religious life, identifying the community or order she joined, locating the archives that may preserve her story, and understanding what researchers might find once they get there. Those collections can contain everything from entrance and profession information to correspondence, photographs, sacramental information, ministry assignments and records documenting decades of a sister’s life.  We also talk about why these women matter beyond genealogy. Catholic sisters played enormous roles in American education, healthcare, orphanages, social services, immigrant communities and humanitarian work. Their institutional histories can also lead researchers into much more difficult chapters of American history, including religious communities’ involvement with enslavement and Native American boarding schools. Searching for Sisters doesn’t treat those complicated legacies as separate from genealogical research....they’re part of understanding the institutions in which these women lived and worked.  And for those of us researching Catholic families (including generations of Latino, Caribbean and immigrant families) religious records can open doors we may never have thought to knock on. Because genealogy has traditionally been very good at following certain milestones: birth, marriage, children, death. A woman who chose a radically different path could become a branch that researchers stopped following. She shouldn’t be. She was still somebody’s daughter. Somebody’s sister. Somebody’s aunt. She had relationships, work, convictions, experiences and a story of her own. This episode is about learning how to find her. Season 9 Episode 4 Encontrando tus raíces boricuas: genealogía puertorriqueña con Dairen Castro Torres

We’re going deep into Puerto Rican genealogy with professional genealogist, historian and educator Dairen Castro Torres, creator of the YouTube channel Dairen Castro Torres the Genealogist. Dairen specializes in reconstructing families through historical records and DNA, with particular expertise in Puerto Rican, Spanish, Portuguese, Dominican and Canary Islands genealogy. His work takes researchers through parish registers, civil registrations, censuses, military and notarial records, probate documents and DNA evidence. Sometimes following families back through centuries of migration, colonialism and movement across the Spanish-speaking world. Together, we talk about what makes Puerto Rican genealogy its own fascinating puzzle: where to begin when researching your Boricua family tree, which records can unlock another generation, what happens when the paper trail gets complicated, and how Puerto Rican ancestry connects the island to Spain, the Canary Islands, the Caribbean and beyond. Dairen also takes genealogy beyond private family trees. Through his educational YouTube channel, he explores the ancestry and histories of notable Puerto Ricans and Puerto Rican figures while showing viewers the sources and methods genealogists use to reconstruct those stories. His work is ultimately about something much larger than collecting names and dates: putting people back into the history they lived. For Puerto Ricans in the diaspora, that work can carry another layer of meaning. You may have been born in New York, Chicago, Florida or somewhere thousands of miles from the island, but your family tree can still lead you through Puerto Rican towns, parishes, migrations, relationships and generations of people whose choices eventually created you. Season 9 Episode 3 De Aquí Para Siempre ¡Knicks en Cinco y La Copa Mundial, y Un Verano de Excelencia!

On today's episode we are joined by MLS commentator Jon Yardley, as we discuss the summer of 2026 and sports in NYC.  New York City in the summer of 2026 felt like magic. The Knicks were NBA champions. The World Cup had arrived in North America. Flags hung from windows and appeared on jerseys all over the city. Bars and restaurants became unofficial headquarters for national teams thousands of miles away. Families gathered around televisions. Strangers celebrated together. And for Latino New Yorkers especially, sports became another language for talking about identity, migration, family and belonging. In this episode of Rediscovering Latinidad, we’re looking back at an extraordinary summer of sports, and at the Latino and Hispanic athletes, fans and communities at the center of it.We start at Madison Square Garden with the New York Knicks’ first NBA championship since 1973. New York defeated San Antonio in five games, with Jalen Brunson delivering 45 points in the championship: clinching Game 5 and winning Finals MVP.  We talk about experiencing that run as New Yorkers, the insanity of the Finals, what a Knicks championship meant after 53 years, and the role of Dominican-American Karl-Anthony Towns and Puerto Rican Brooklyn native José Alvarado in a championship team that looked a little more like the city celebrating it.  And somehow, New York’s sports summer was only getting started. The 2026 FIFA World Cup brought fútbol directly into the neighborhoods of one of the world’s great immigrant cities. And yes. We have to talk about Lionel Messi. Argentina arrived as defending world champions and made it all the way back to the final, giving us one last enormous World Cup chapter for Messi. And the championship match couldn’t have been staged much closer to us: Spain vs. Argentina in New York/New Jersey. Spain finally broke the scoreless match in extra time, with Ferran Torres scoring in the 106th minute to win 1–0 and give Spain its second men’s World Cup title.  Join us for a fun episode! Season 8 Episode 13 Los latinos en la Revolución Americana (America 250)

As America approaches its 250th anniversary, we ask a question that doesn’t get asked nearly enough: Where were Latinos during the American Revolution? The answer may surprise you. In this special episode of Rediscovering Latinidad, we explore the often-overlooked role that Spanish America, Latino military leaders, Black communities under Spanish rule, and Hispanic families played in the founding of what would become the United States. From Bernardo de Gálvez, whose military victories helped secure the Gulf Coast and divert British resources, to Francisco de Miranda, whose revolutionary ideals connected struggles for independence across the Atlantic, we examine how Latino history has always been part of the American story. We also travel to colonial St. Augustine, where Spain offered freedom to many enslaved people fleeing British colonies.  This episode reminds us that America’s story has never belonged to one people alone.
