26 Jobs by 26...Then She Discovered Her Purpose | Luvina Leslie & The Curly Hair Salon

In this episode of the Tranzcendent Outlook Podcast, I had the opportunity to sit down with Luvina Leslie, owner of the Curly Hair Salon in New Haven, CT, for a conversation that was as inspiring as it was honest. Luvina takes us through the journey that ultimately led her to hair styling — a journey that included trying countless different careers and, as she shares in the episode, having 26 different jobs by the age of 26 before discovering the passion that would become her purpose. She opens up about taking the leap into entrepreneurship and the incredible circumstances surrounding the opening of her first salon. With very little outside support, Luvina relied heavily on her faith, her belief in God, and the commitment of her sister to help her get started. She even shares the remarkable story of how her first landlord went from asking for $15,000 to move into the space to offering her the furnished salon for just $5,000 — with the opportunity to pay in installments. But Luvina’s journey wasn't without its challenges. When her daughter was born with Down syndrome, Luvina made the difficult decision to close her first salon and completely reconfigure her life and schedule so she could give her daughter the time, love, and attention she deserved. Her story is a powerful reminder that sometimes purpose requires us to change direction — not give up. Throughout our conversation, Luvina makes one thing incredibly clear: money has never been and will never be her primary goal. Her goal has always been to wake up happy and excited to go to work. And for Luvina, that happiness comes from styling hair, connecting with people, creating opportunities, and doing what she loves. At the same time, she openly shares how grateful she is for the financial stability that entrepreneurship has provided — from being able to give to her church and help people in need, to providing her children with a great education and creating greater peace of mind for her family. Luvina also talks about the joys and responsibilities of owning her own salon, her deep appreciation for her employees — whom she considers family — and the importance of creating a workplace built on love, gratitude, and community. And she's not done yet. Luvina is preparing to open her second salon in Hartford, CT in October 2026, and her excitement about this next chapter is contagious. This conversation is a reminder that success doesn't always begin with money, connections, or a perfect plan. Sometimes it begins with faith, persistence, a willingness to keep searching, and the courage to pursue the thing that makes you come alive. Luvina is a born entrepreneur with a heart of gold, an infectious attitude, and a powerful story of purpose. Listen. Watch. Be inspired. And remember: Loving what you do is the key. 20+ Years of Community Impact: Eileen Lopez-Cordone’s Story | Tranzcendent Outlook Podcast

In this episode of the Tranzcendent Outlook Podcast, I sit down with Eileen Lopez-Cordone, President of the Greater Bridgeport Latino Network, for an inspiring conversation about leadership, service, family, and the power of community. As one of the organization’s cofounders more than 23 years ago, Eileen shares the story behind the Greater Bridgeport Latino Network — what sparked the idea, how she and her colleagues strategically connected with the people who helped bring the nonprofit to life, and how that vision has continued to evolve. We also talk about the organization’s longstanding partnership with the American Red Cross, which began more than two decades ago and has led to biannual blood drives at the McGivney Center for over 20 years. But Eileen’s commitment to community extends well beyond one organization. As Chair of the Bridgeport Public Education Fund, she discusses the importance of mentoring Bridgeport public high school students and helping prepare them for success in college, careers, and life. Eileen also opens up about something many community leaders and working parents can relate to: finding balance. As a wife and mother of two boys, she shares how she manages the demands of family, work, and community involvement — and why knowing when to say “no” can be just as important as knowing when to say “yes. ”What stood out most to me is Eileen’s kind, thoughtful, caring, and generous outlook on life and service. Her commitment to helping others and strengthening her community is evident in everything she does. I’m grateful to Eileen for taking the time to join me for this conversation and for sharing her story, wisdom, and perspective on the Tranzcendent Outlook Podcast. The Unexpected Journey Behind K Starr Kollective | Karen Roach | Tranzcendent Outlook Podcast

On this episode of the Tranzcendent Outlook Podcast, I sat down with Karen Roach, founder of K Starr Kollective, to talk about the unexpected journey that led her to discovering her passion, her purpose, and ultimately, her own business. Karen has always felt like life started early for her. She married young, became a mother young, purchased her first home young, and even thought she had figured out her career path early on. She pursued a degree in fashion design, but along the way, she began to realize that the traditional career path wasn't quite where she belonged. Then, a simple introduction from a best friend to a nonprofit organization opened the door to something different. Karen discovered that community, giving back, connecting people, and sharing resources were becoming a much bigger part of who she was and who she wanted to become. What began as an experience outside of her expected career path would ultimately help her recognize that she was being drawn toward something far more fulfilling. Later, while working for a company that created a position specifically for her, Karen had the opportunity to truly explore her strengths and unearth the passion that had been there all along. That discovery became a turning point — and eventually, the foundation for K Starr Kollective, her event-curating business. In this conversation, we talk about: - Finding purpose in unexpected places - Letting go of the career path you thought you wanted - The power of community and giving back - Recognizing the gifts and passions that are already within you - Creating opportunities instead of waiting for them - Turning your purpose into a business - The journey behind building K Starr Kollective Karen's story is a reminder that sometimes our path doesn't become clear all at once. Sometimes, it's revealed through the people we meet, the experiences we have, and the moments when we finally recognize what has been calling us all along. If you're navigating your own career transition, considering entrepreneurship, or simply trying to understand what you're meant to do next, this conversation is for you. Preserving Puerto Rican Culture: Joe Rodriguez on Community, Culture & Puerto Ricans United, INC.

In this episode of the Tranzcendent Outlook Podcast, I sit down with Joe Rodriguez, President of Puerto Ricans United, Inc. (PRU) in New Haven, Connecticut, for an inspiring conversation about community, culture, leadership, and the importance of knowing where you come from. Born and raised in New Haven, Joe’s journey into community activism began at just 16 years old, when a knock on his door from Kevin Diaz opened the door to a lifetime of service. Joe reflects on the people and experiences that helped shape him along the way, including the important role his mother played in encouraging him, keeping him grounded, and motivating him to continue pursuing his dreams. Over the years, Joe developed a reputation for his strong organizational skills and commitment to the community. Those qualities eventually led him, alongside fellow community leaders, to help revive the Puerto Rican Festival in New Haven. This year marks 10 years of the festival under the leadership of Puerto Ricans United, Inc. — a milestone that represents not only celebration, but perseverance, collaboration, and cultural pride. Joe also shares his excitement about the return of the Puerto Rican Cultural Pageant, discusses the work PRU has accomplished throughout the community, and expresses his gratitude for everyone who has helped make that work possible. Looking toward the future, Joe and the PRU Executive Board have big plans: continuing to grow the festival, giving back to the community, establishing a permanent home for the organization, and placing a greater emphasis on educating the Puerto Rican community about its history and culture, as well as current events impacting the island of Puerto Rico. And, of course, no conversation with Joe would be complete without talking about salsa! Joe shares his love for the genre and reveals his go-to artists when he's on a long drive. This is a conversation about community, culture, family, leadership, perseverance, and the responsibility we have to preserve and pass our heritage on to the next generation. Family, Politics & Purpose: Keyla Medina's Journey | Tranzcendent Outlook Podcast

In this episode of the Tranzcendent Outlook Podcast, I sit down with Bridgeport City Councilwoman and Operations Director of Building One Community, Keyla Medina, for a powerful conversation about family, resilience, service, and finding your purpose. Keyla takes us back to her childhood growing up in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and opens up about the challenges that shaped her early life—including losing her father at an early age and frequently moving from place to place. She even shares the story of spending time in Puerto Rico, where she had to sharpen her Spanish before eventually returning home to Bridgeport. We talk about the life-changing impact becoming a mother had on Keyla and how the birth of her first daughter changed the way she viewed life and ultimately helped strengthen her relationship with her brother. Keyla also takes us through the journey that led her into nonprofit and community work, including her experiences with Faith Acts for Education, Make the Road, the Puerto Rican Parade of Fairfield County, Latino Scholarship Fund, and Building One Community. Along the way, she explains what inspired her to dedicate so much of her life to serving others and advocating for her community. Eventually, Keyla felt it was time to take that commitment a step further by getting involved in local politics. She shares what motivated her to run for office, what it meant to be elected to the Bridgeport City Council, and what it's really like balancing the responsibilities of being a City Councilwoman with her 9-to-5 career. But perhaps just as important, Keyla talks about maintaining balance at home. She opens up about her relationship with her husband, who also serves as a Board of Education member, and how the two support one another while making sure public service doesn't come at the expense of their relationship. And at the heart of it all is family. Keyla shares how much she values spending time with her daughters and the joy of becoming a grandmother. This is a conversation about loss, growth, motherhood, service, leadership, love, and what it means to remain grounded in family while dedicating yourself to your community. If you're from Bridgeport—or simply interested in hearing the story behind someone who has dedicated her life to making a difference—this is an episode you don't want to miss. A Life of Service: Nonprofits, Community, Foster Care & Family | John Chamberlain

In this episode of the Tranzcendent Outlook Podcast, I sit down with John Chamberlain, Director of Development at Sterling Community Center in Stratford, Connecticut, for a wide-ranging conversation about nonprofit leadership, community, family, and an overall meaningful life. John takes us back to his childhood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where some of his favorite memories involved piling into the family minivan and traveling with his family. He shares how his experiences at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in New York’s Finger Lakes region, followed by a year with AmeriCorps, helped shape the path that would eventually lead him into the nonprofit world. After college, John spent time in Washington, D.C., where he got his first real taste of nonprofit work with KABOOM!, an organization that partners with communities to build kid-designed playspaces. Eventually, John made his way to Connecticut, where he found a career that brought together three things he knew he wanted to incorporate into his work: kids, education, and fundraising. John discusses his experiences working for organizations including the Discovery Museum, where he spent more than five years, and Beardsley Zoo, where he worked for more than three years, before joining Sterling Community Center, where he currently serves as Director of Development. We also talk about the tremendous impact that Leadership Greater Bridgeport, a leadership program facilitated by the Bridgeport Regional Business Council, has had on John’s career and his perspective on the Greater Bridgeport region. John shares how the people he met through the program helped expand his professional network, deepen his connection to the community, and influence the way he views the place he now calls home. Finally, John opens up about one of the most important parts of his life: his family. He and his wife share the journey of raising two children while also becoming foster and adoptive parents. John talks about the joys and challenges of fostering and encourages anyone who has considered becoming a foster parent to explore the possibility.
