The Drift: Why Your Career Feels Like It Belongs to Everyone But You - EP. 146

This episode is not about burnout. It's about the thing that happens before burnout. The quieter version. The one that's harder to name — and harder to catch because it doesn't announce itself.Dr. Sheneka calls it the drift. It's the slow, accumulating distance between the career you imagined when you started medical school and the one you've been silently settling into — one small concession at a time. That's exactly how the drift works. In this episode, Dr. Sheneka names it — and then tells you what to do about it. Here's what she gets into:- The difference between the drift and burnout — and why the drift is harder to catch- The pattern of small decisions that adds up to a career that fits everyone except you- The difference between adapting to a job and disappearing into one- Why women without children are especially targeted for having their time taken- How to start taking up space again — one ask, one boundary, one conversation at a time- The one thing you've been putting off asking for that you could do something about this week You did not work this hard to build a career that fits everyone else. The shrinking happened gradually. The reclaiming can happen the same way, just in the other direction. — The Blk Doctor Collective Podcast is hosted by Dr. Sheneka Horne — pediatrician, physician coach, and first-gen American. Built for Black physicians who are ready to stop settling and start building careers that actually belong to them. A few episodes left before summer break. Subscribe so you catch every one.

Yes, No, or Nothing - How to Handle Every Response in a Negotiation

You asked. Now what? Everyone prepares for the ask. Nobody prepares for what comesafter it — and that moment right after you put something onthe table is where most negotiations are quietly won or lost. In this episode, Dr. Sheneka gets into the part of negotiationnobody talks about: the three scenarios that happen after you ask, and exactly what to do in each one. Whether they say yes, they say no, or they go completely silent, you need a plan for all three. Because without one, your brain will fill the silence for you. And it won't fill it in your favor. Here's what we cover: The trap of talking past the close when they say yes(and why immediate agreement sometimes triggers panic) Why no is a data point, not a verdict — and the onequestion to ask when you get it How to survive the silence without offering to takeback what you just asked for The hedging language that signals uncertainty even when you're completely certain Why whoever speaks first after the ask tends to be ata disadvantage — and how to make sure it isn't you Dr. Sheneka's counting trick for staying calm when thesilence feels unbearable How to follow up after silence in a way that's clear, direct, and not apologetic If you have a negotiation coming up — an offer, a crucialconversation, a role that needs to change — save this episodeand come back to it before you walk in the room. The asking is not the finish line. What you do in the moment after is where it's actually won. — The Blk Doctor Collective Podcast is hosted by Dr. ShenekaHorne — pediatrician, physician coach, and first-gen American.New episodes every week for Black physicians who are donesettling and ready to build careers that work for their lives. Dr. Kimmy Reynolds is back — and she came with ALL the updates. Stuck in a "Good Enough" Job? - The Lie Nobody Tells Black Women Doctor || EP 141

I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately… How we can be in a job that looks “good on paper”… checks a few boxes… gives us some flexibility… and still feel like something isn’t right. And instead of leaving, we stay. Not because we love it, but because a part of us is convinced… “this is probably the best I’m going to get.” In this episode, I’m walking through the very real, very human thought patterns that keep us stuck in roles we’ve outgrown. We talk about: Why your brain convinces you what you want doesn’t existThe fear of leaving something “good enough”Feeling grateful… while also feeling deeply unhappyThe quiet belief that maybe you don’t deserve moreAnd how to start shifting out of that stuck Because the truth is… you’re not stuck. Your brain is just trying to keep you safe… even if “safe” is slowly draining you. This is a conversation about awareness, choice, and starting to imagine something different… without immediately shutting it down. If you’ve been feeling that tension… this episode is for you. Why The Healthcare System Fails Black Patients || EP 140

In this episode, I’m literally getting ready for work and just talking through what’s been on my mind lately. No script, no outline… just real thoughts about what it feels like to be practicing medicine in this current climate. Because it’s a lot. There are doctors out here doing amazing, ethical, patient-centered work. And then there are people doing the absolute most… unnecessary labs, questionable treatments, pushing products, building entire platforms off fear. And patients don’t always know the difference. So now we’re in this position where: we’re trying to build trust while also being grouped into a system people don’t trust while also trying not to burn ourselves out in the process And then on top of that… you’ve got the system itself. Insurance. Pharma. Hospital admin. Everybody pulling from different directions and somehow the doctor is still expected to just… hold it all together. I also talk a bit about locums in this episode, because even in those spaces, you’re still seeing the same themes. The same expectations. The same quiet pressure to sacrifice more than you probably should. And I’m really sitting with this question right now: Are we supposed to fix medicine from the inside? Or is the real work going to happen outside of it? If you’re in healthcare, thinking about entering it, or even just trying to understand why things feel the way they do right now… this episode will probably resonate.
