Ending my Coaching Program - How I Pivot Without Guilt - EP. 150

In this episode, I'm getting honest about closing this chapter of the BLK Doctor business - the coaching practice, the one-on-one work, all of it. I talk about my mentees, my plants, my travels, and everything that's helped me build a life that truly fills my cup. Because here's what I've learned: you are so much more than your MD. And prioritizing yourself is never the wrong decision. In this episode: Why I'm ending this phase of the BLK Doctor businessWhat burnout taught me (twice 😅)The gap nobody trains you for in medicineHow I rediscovered who I am outside of my white coatWhat's coming next (I'm not telling everything yet 👀) I'm not going anywhere forever - I've still got some incredible guest episodes dropping. Negotiating Your Worth as a Doctor - Dr Janeeka Benoit on Career Pivots, Locums, and Building Wealth

Y'all, this episode is one of those conversations that just flows - because Dr. Janeeka Benoit is not only a colleague and fellow New Yorker, but honestly she might be living my parallel life in a different body 😂Dr. Janeeka is an internal medicine and sports medicine physician who graduated from her fellowship at Meharry Medical College right in the middle of the pandemic in 2021 — which, as you know, is a whole story in itself. With sports basically shut down and W-2 primary care not feeling like the right fit, she made a bold move into locum tenens medicine. And honey, that decision opened up a whole world. In this episode, we talk about: - How she got into locums when traditional doors weren't opening — and why she refused to settle for a life she didn't want- The real talk on negotiation — she literally hired her own negotiation coach because nobody in medical school or residency taught us how to ask for what we're worth (and that needs to change!)- Getting creative when the answer is no — from negotiating flights home to targeting rural hospitals willing to let her blend specialties- The grind to get into hospitalist medicine — three months of eating lunch in her car calling recruiters, and why she walked away before she had the next thing locked in- Building her own telehealth practice from scratch — and designing it with connection at the center because she saw exactly what was missing from every company she worked for- Her niche: high-achieving women who deserve a physician-partner who sees them, hears them, and can meet them where they are. One of my favorite takeaways from this convo: Don't risk staying comfortable at the expense of going after what you really want. The money might be good. The work might be fine. But if you're not happy, that matters. You are allowed to be grateful AND want more. Period. ____________________________________________ Dr. Janeeka Benoit is a Double Board-Certified Internist, Sports Medicine physician, and founder of Invessel Health & Wellness. She helps high achieving women achieve sustainable weight loss to lower their risk of chronic disease and live longer, healthier lives. Her approach is grounded in both clinical expertise and personal experience. Despite leading an active lifestyle, she experienced unexpected weight gain and rising cholesterol herself, revealing the gap between conventional weight loss advice and true metabolic health. Today, Dr. Janeeka's mission is centered on helping women achieve Less Weight. Less Risk. More Years so they can spend more of life healthy, active, and living life on their own terms. The Belief That Almost Cost Me Everything - EP. 148

There's a belief that sounds like wisdom. It feels like self-awareness. Like being realistic about how the world works. I held it for years. "If I ask for too much, I will lose what I already have." I was negotiating. Getting good outcomes. Teaching other physicians to ask for more. And still leaving things on the table — because the belief was making my decisions without my permission. Here's what I get into: The belief that felt like wisdom — and what it was actually costing me Why being self-aware doesn't always protect you from your own limiting beliefs — sometimes it makes the costume more convincing How the belief hides inside your reasons — the timing isn't right, you should wait for the next review cycle, you should be grateful — and why those reasons feel completely logical The belief flow in action: how one belief quietly creates every thought, feeling, and action that follows Why I stayed in a dysfunctional environment longer than I should have — and the belief underneath that decision How to find YOUR belief — the one running your career without your permission The sentence to finish out loud: "If I ask for exactly what I want, I'm afraid that..." What changes the moment you finally name it This is one of the final episodes of the season. I am is headed into summer break — but not before this one, and not before the season finale next week. Subscribe so you're there for both. — The Blk Doctor Collective Podcast is hosted by Dr. Sheneka Horne — pediatrician, physician coach, and first-gen American. The Drift: Why Your Career Feels Like It Belongs to Everyone But You - EP. 146

This episode is not about burnout. It's about the thing that happens before burnout. The quieter version. The one that's harder to name — and harder to catch because it doesn't announce itself.Dr. Sheneka calls it the drift. It's the slow, accumulating distance between the career you imagined when you started medical school and the one you've been silently settling into — one small concession at a time. That's exactly how the drift works. In this episode, Dr. Sheneka names it — and then tells you what to do about it. Here's what she gets into:- The difference between the drift and burnout — and why the drift is harder to catch- The pattern of small decisions that adds up to a career that fits everyone except you- The difference between adapting to a job and disappearing into one- Why women without children are especially targeted for having their time taken- How to start taking up space again — one ask, one boundary, one conversation at a time- The one thing you've been putting off asking for that you could do something about this week You did not work this hard to build a career that fits everyone else. The shrinking happened gradually. The reclaiming can happen the same way, just in the other direction. — The Blk Doctor Collective Podcast is hosted by Dr. Sheneka Horne — pediatrician, physician coach, and first-gen American. Built for Black physicians who are ready to stop settling and start building careers that actually belong to them. A few episodes left before summer break. Subscribe so you catch every one.

Yes, No, or Nothing - How to Handle Every Response in a Negotiation

You asked. Now what? Everyone prepares for the ask. Nobody prepares for what comesafter it — and that moment right after you put something onthe table is where most negotiations are quietly won or lost. In this episode, Dr. Sheneka gets into the part of negotiationnobody talks about: the three scenarios that happen after you ask, and exactly what to do in each one. Whether they say yes, they say no, or they go completely silent, you need a plan for all three. Because without one, your brain will fill the silence for you. And it won't fill it in your favor. Here's what we cover: The trap of talking past the close when they say yes(and why immediate agreement sometimes triggers panic) Why no is a data point, not a verdict — and the onequestion to ask when you get it How to survive the silence without offering to takeback what you just asked for The hedging language that signals uncertainty even when you're completely certain Why whoever speaks first after the ask tends to be ata disadvantage — and how to make sure it isn't you Dr. Sheneka's counting trick for staying calm when thesilence feels unbearable How to follow up after silence in a way that's clear, direct, and not apologetic If you have a negotiation coming up — an offer, a crucialconversation, a role that needs to change — save this episodeand come back to it before you walk in the room. The asking is not the finish line. What you do in the moment after is where it's actually won. — The Blk Doctor Collective Podcast is hosted by Dr. ShenekaHorne — pediatrician, physician coach, and first-gen American.New episodes every week for Black physicians who are donesettling and ready to build careers that work for their lives.
