    From Sorrowed Soul to Ascended Savior (the power of grieving our sin nature to rise with Jesus)

    Here’s the gist, human. When was the last time you felt the kind of sorrow that overtook your soul? A flooding sorrow that filled every crevice of your heart, a rising pressure, the suffocating weight of sadness, a tragic suffering for what has come or is about to come, a fear that engulfs your spirit, a non-negotiable reckoning within your gut, so deep, such a feeling of hopelessness, an ending, a loss, a terminal feeling in a heart that hope has vacated, a churning stomach nauseous with defeat, a thousand veins in shock, paralyzed, pumping sadness through your core, a human tragedy that only you must feel, that your spirit has completely lost its way, confusing north with south, east with west, an all-consuming fire that is frantic, breathless, spiritless. When you feel this sorrow, no matter how unending that grief-laden moment, that time is, someone had it worse.  Someone who was bound to the cross. Matthew 26:38 Gethsemane 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” Jesus was taken up by his Heavenly Father. The intimacy with which we hold on to this promise is overwhelming. Like the sorrow in the soul of Jesus in that garden.  It is crazy to think that in the beginning man walked with God in his garden. Then his Son, the Son of man, pleaded for a different destiny, but accepted his Father’s Will in a garden. This would be called redemption. Join us. E183.     Spiritual Affirmations Change Your Self-Talk (the power of what God has promised us)

    Here’s the gist, human. There are countless scenes in the Bible when someone stopped and laid down a personal affirmation of God’s promise, the Messiah’s purpose, an affirmation of God’s nature, his promises. Moses. Joshua. Daniel. Martha. The woman at the well. The people Jesus healed. The apostle Paul. People who had come face to face with the truth. And proclaimed it. Affirmation of what we believe can do all kinds of things: change our direction, our minds, our decisions. In that moment when we find ourselves turning away, or choosing to sit in our own self-pride, our own pride infested self-talk, or perhaps a paralyzing spiritual stupor. As if we couldn’t remember one of God’s promises, as if we couldn’t recall one phrase that Jesus said, or muster even a mental comma to gain spiritual clarity.  But God knows us. In all of this earthy-ness we live in, he can tame our wild will for his purpose. By leaving our self-talk trail to live within his divine determination to make his home in our mind and heart.  Join us. E182.     When Prayer is Sitting in God’s Presence (the silent footsteps of Jesus beside you)

    Here’s the gist, human. If we spend our daily life ruled by the answers we need from God, our prayers can give in to a self-guided perspective. How lonely. We were not created to be alone. God walked with Adam and Eve in the garden. Until.  A deep prayer life is not complicated. It is contemplative. Prayer is God’s answer before the answer before the answer. His call to come sit with him. Listen to his Word, reflect, respond, and sit in his presence. If the Word became flesh, and Jesus became our Savior then we should bring that Word into our prayer life. Imagine prayer like walking along the road to Emmaus with Jesus and the two men (believers) after he was resurrected, but before he ascended. The moments of silence when all you hear is his footsteps beside you. I want that. Psalm 71 17 Since my youth, God, you have taught me,   and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds. 18 Even when I am old and gray,   do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation,   your mighty acts to all who are to come.     Is God’s Peace Running Through You? (peace like a river kind of thing)

    Here’s the gist, human. I find myself growing beyond spiritual ultimatums like “I am at peace” as if peace in God is a static condition. For me peace is a tributary of God’s nature, his spirit running through my heart. And I have to listen for it. Moving water takes its cue from its Creator. God navigates our choices, our mental roadblocks, our psychological debris from the past, our grief, our fear of failure, our fear of anything, everything. It’s pretty clear. Rivers shape landscapes. This is why God turns our attention to it. So we can more deeply understand how he moves.  John 7:38 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them. Join us.     I am Shaken, Lord (I miss my dog)

    Here’s the gist, human. I miss my dog. I spent the last two years deeply anxious about losing her. I prayed for a circumstance, a manageable outcome, a long runway to losing her, a prolonged exit that would let us down gently into a daily life without her. That didn’t happen.  Truth is, anxiety isolates us from God. That should be an unbearable separation. If I had given my anxiety about losing my wheaten girl to God along the way, and petitioned for his presence, instead of petitioning for an outcome—to give me more time with her, to heal her—I could draw more fully on his presence now.  That is the scope of anxiety across our lives, when it tightens its grip so much so that we are spiritually stalled from preparing for life’s earthly trials.  So I am banging on God’s door, asking God to be my fortress. I petition him to take me in, to fortify my heart in my grieving so I can say “I will never be shaken.”  Join us. E179.  Psalm 62 For the director of music. For Jeduthun.     Are You Captive to Anxiety? (let God be the measure of its depth and scope)

    Here’s the gist, human. Nothing new here. Who doesn’t have anxiety, who doesn’t work hard to not worry and perpetuate more of it in the process? For so many of us, that is an ongoing rhetorical state of mind. We don’t even need to answer. We know it’s true.  Let’s call anxiety exactly what it is. Let’s name it to God. A petition of the heart. That we take it to him, and let him measure the depth of our anxiety against the scope of its reach in our life. Because our God is sovereign. Join us.     What is Your Truth on the Ground? (Part 3, Spiritual Maturity, Peter’s parting words)

    Here’s the gist, human. The young, ambitious Peter, and the young, skeptical James grew up, spiritually. From baby Christians, eye witnesses of our Savior on earth, to spiritual leaders and two voices that prompt us to grow toward God by living a life that represents his truth on our ground. The simple scripture-based exercise in e175, e176, and now e177 is meant to call out my faith, your faith and how it is defined by our spiritual maturity in action.  God’s Word illuminates his faithfulness by what I do. There is no substitute for God’s Word. I love immersing in it and letting God’s spirit speak.  My faith is defined by my spiritual maturity in action, his truth on my ground. God’s Word illuminates his faithfulness by what I do.  So I have an answer for how much clearer God needs to be  He is perfectly clear.  And I have a response.     What is Your Truth on the Ground? (Part 2, Spiritual Maturity, Peter)

    Here’s the gist, human. Peter’s first letter is impassioned, truth-seared, and glorious. It comes from his experiences, that he has lived his life trading measure for measure, that what he does in action, will receive a reciprocal spiritual strengthening. That spiritual maturity is embracing the glory-bound spiritual gain of things. His life convinces us of this: that a full investment in our obedience yields the highest spiritual return.  We can’t not hear Peter. My faith is defined by my spiritual maturity in action, my truth on the ground. God’s Word illuminates my faith by what I do.  So I ask us, “how much clearer does God need to be? Peter speaks.
