S4 - EP 7 - JANE "JOLLY JANE" TOPPAN: THE KILLER NURSE

Welcome to Season 4 – Episode 7! In this episode, we examine the case of Jane Toppan, a woman often reduced to the label of “killer nurse,” but whose crimes reveal something far more disturbing. Toppan didn’t simply murder her patients - she manipulated them.  Charged with twelve murders and confessing to at least thirty-one, she exploited a system that trusted caregivers implicitly and rarely questioned deaths labeled as “natural.” Her case forces an uncomfortable conversation about access, authority, and how easily harm can hide behind a smile and a uniform. This is a case study in pathology, power, and what happens when caregiving becomes compulsion. The poison for this episode is the Black Velvet. If you want to drink with me, you’ll need champagne and Guinness stout. Black Velvet: ½ champagne½ Guinness stoutSlowly pour the champagne into a chilled flute, then gently top with Guinness by pouring it over the back of a spoon to create the layered effect. No garnish. Let it sit as it is. Enjoy! ISTDIANG: SOBER TAKE - PAMELA HEMPHILL & JAN 6

In this Sober Take, we examine the federal sentencing memorandum in Pamela Anne Hemphill, a January 6 case that shows how courts evaluate individual conduct inside a mass event. *CORRECTION:KEPT CALLING HER PATRICIA IN THE EPISODE* Hemphill pleaded guilty to parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a restricted Capitol building, a misdemeanor offense. On its face, the charge appears minor. But the government’s sentencing memorandum argues that her conduct, credibility, and history place the case on the more serious end of the misdemeanor spectrum. The government ultimately recommended 60 days of incarceration, followed by probation, community service, and restitution, emphasizing deterrence, accountability, and respect for the rule of law. This episode does not relitigate January 6.  It explains why context matters using the government’s own filing as the guide. S4 - EP 6 - THE NIGHTMARE LEGEND: SYLVESTER “TWO GUN PETE” WASHINGTON

Welcome to Season 4 – Episode 6! In this episode, we step deep into Chicago history to unpack the myth and the menace of Sylvester “Two Gun Pete” Washington, one of the most infamous and contradictory figures in the city’s law enforcement past. Celebrated by newspapers as a fearless crime fighter and quietly feared by the communities he policed, Washington was the most recognizable Black police officer in Chicago history. Armed with two pearl-handled .357 magnums, he built a reputation that blurred the line between lawman and outlaw. This episode examines how Washington’s violence was repeatedly ruled “justified,” how celebrity and corruption shielded him from accountability, and how his private life revealed a pattern of abuse, sexual violence, and unchecked power that followed him off the streets and into his home. This is not a Western. It’s not a hero’s story. It’s a case study in how authority, fear, racism, and institutional protection can turn one man into a nightmare legend. The poison for this episode is The Last Word. If you want to drink with me, you’ll need gin, chartreuse, marachino cherries liqueur, lime juice, and brandied cherries. Last Word: 3/4 ounce gin3/4 ounce green Chartreuse3/4 ounce maraschino liqueur3/4 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezedGarnish: brandied cherry (optional)Add the gin, green Chartreuse, maraschino liqueur, and lime juice to a shaker filled with ice. Shake until thoroughly chilled, then strain into a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with a brandied cherry, if you’re feeling fancy. Enjoy! ISTDIANG: SOBER TAKE - STAKE.US, CELEBRITY GAMBLING & A FEDERAL LAWSUIT

In this Sober Take, I ramble about a federal class-action lawsuit alleging that Stake.us operates as an illegal online casino in the United States while marketing itself as a “free” social gaming platform. The lawsuit also names celebrity promoters, including Drake and Adin Ross, alleging they were paid to livestream gambling activity using funds supplied by the platform—creating a misleading picture of risk for everyday users. This episode does not determine guilt. Instead, it explains what is being alleged, why the case is being heard in federal court, influencer gambling, and what this lawsuit could mean for social casinos, digital advertising, and online accountability going forward. S4 - EP 5 - SAMUEL LITTLE: THE MOST PROLIFIC SERIAL KILLER IN U.S. HISTORY

Welcome to Season 4 – Episode 5! MERRY CHRISTMAS! This week, We're on a road trip. I'm joined by my sister, Kirrah, as we take on one of the most disturbing cases in modern American crime history. His name was Samuel Little, and for decades he moved through cities virtually invisible. Between the 1970s and early 2000s, Little murdered women across the United States while law enforcement repeatedly failed to connect the cases or, in many instances, failed to investigate them at all. We're going to break down Samuel Little's, how racism, sexism, and systemic neglect allowed his victims’ deaths to be misclassified or dismissed, and how a series of late-life confessions finally forced the FBI to reckon with the true scope of his crimes. This episode isn’t just about the most prolific serial killer in U.S. history, it’s about the systems that enabled him, the lives that were overlooked, and the uncomfortable reality that justice only arrived when it was too late. Grab your drink, because the poison in this episode is the Road Trip. If you want to drink with us, you’ll need cognac, rye whiskey, crème de cassis (black currant) liqueur, lemon juice, lingonberry preserves, salt and sugar. The Road Trip: 1 oz cognac1 oz rye whiskey½ oz crème de cassis or black currant liqueur1 barspoon lingonberry preserves1 oz lemon juicegranulated sugar, for rimkosher salt, for rimlemon twist, for garnish (optional)Combine equal parts salt and sugar and use the mixture to rim a chilled serving glass. Add the remaining ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake hard for about 20 seconds. Strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with lemon - or don’t. Enjoy! S4 - EP 4 - THE CHAOS OF ANDREW CUNANAN

Welcome to Season 4 – Episode 4! This week, we’re taking a sharp left turn from Kansas and landing in Miami Beach.  In July of 1997, world-renowned fashion icon Gianni Versace was gunned down on the steps of his own mansion. And at the center of it all? A social climber named Andrew Cunanan. Today, we’re digging into how a kid from San Diego spiraled into a cross-country killing spree, how he managed to stay one step ahead of the entire country for three months, and how it all ended in Miami leaving the fashion world in shambles. Let's break down the chaos that Cunanan left behind. Grab your drink, because the poison in this episode is The Red Carpet. If you want to drink with us, you’ll need vodka, Campari, pomegranate liqueur, lemon, and simple syrup. S4 - EP 2 - HEAVEN'S GATE

Welcome to Season 4 - Episode 2! **THIS EPISODE HAS SOUND ISSUES** This week, we're going to blast off (literally) into one of the strangest true stories in American history: Heaven’s Gate. In 1997, 39 people dressed in identical black outfits and Nike Decades “left their vehicles” in hopes of catching a ride on a UFO trailing the Hale–Bopp comet. Behind the headlines were Marshall Applewhite (a fallen preacher’s kid turned prophet) and Bonnie Nettles (a nurse turned spiritual guide) who built a belief system that mixed Theosophy, UFOs, and the Book of Revelation into one cosmic cocktail of control.  Sal is with me again to unpack how it started with a Presbyterian boy from Texas and a New Age nurse...and how it ended, with purple shrouds, poisoned applesauce, and a spaceship that never came. Grab your drink, and let’s talk about the cult that tried to evacuate Earth, the poison in this episode is the Cosmonaut. If you want to drink with us, you will need lime juice, vodka, cardamom bitters, ginger liquer. The recipe for the Cosmonaut is as follows: 1 1/2 oz  La Poire Flavored Vodka1 dash Cardamom Bitters1 oz Lime juice3/4 oz Ginger LiqueurFill cocktail shaker with ice, add ingerdients, shake ingredients until chilled. Strain into cocktail glass over an ice sphere. Optional: Garnish with a candy dusted grape. Enjoy!
