Unapologetically Catholic

Matt Poole

I am unapologetically Catholic and I hope you'll be able to see why! Growing up as a Protestant I was told a lot of things that the Catholic Church taught, only to later find out it either wasn't true or there was a misunderstanding of the teaching. I want to help shed light on what the Catholic Church actually teaches and believes. If you're curious about what Catholics believe, you're in the right place. Nobody Desires Evil, So Why Do We Sin? (Catholic Explanation)

Nobody desires evil, so why do we sin?In this episode of Unapologetically Catholic, I sit down with my friend Anthony, a Catholic convert, psychotherapist, and adjunct university professor to explore the Catholic understanding of sin, desire, and the human search for the good.We discuss why people don’t wake up wanting to choose evil, but instead pursue what appears good in the moment. Drawing from Catholic theology, philosophy, and psychology, we explain how sin is a “missing of the mark”, a misrecognition of the true good God created us for.Inspired by the teachings of St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Augustine, this conversation shows that evil is not something we desire in itself, but a lack or distortion of the good. Our wills naturally aim toward goodness, but our understanding becomes clouded by temptation, habits, and disordered desires. We also explore:Why sin feels attractive at firstHow addiction reveals the false promise of sinThe difference between mortal and venial sinHow deliberate consent and knowledge factor into moral choiceWhy sin damages us spiritually, mentally, and physicallyHow the Church and the sacraments heal what sin woundsWhy confession is medicine for the soulHow heaven and hell are ultimately about what we desireThis episode highlights the Catholic view of the human person as created in the image and likeness of God, wounded by sin, but never destroyed. God does not abandon us in our brokenness. Through grace, the sacraments, and right desire, we are invited back toward the good we were made for.As C.S. Lewis famously suggested, the doors of hell are locked from the inside. God gives us what we choose and the Christian life is about learning to desire Him above all else.Whether you’re Catholic, exploring the faith, or coming from a Protestant background, this conversation will help you better understand:Why sin hurts usWhy God’s commandments are not arbitrary rulesAnd how grace restores true freedomBe sure to subscribe to the channel and share this video with your friends!Want more from Unapologetically Catholic? Is Christ Re-Crucified at Mass?

Subscribe to Unapologetically Catholic for more episodes like this! Is Christ re-crucified at every Catholic Mass? This is a common question and a misconception I had myself. In this video, I break down what the Catholic Church REALLY teaches the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is, and whether Christ is sacrificed again and again or if it was truly "once for all". I read from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Scripture and Joe Heschmeyer's book "The Eucharist is Really Jesus" to answer questions like: What does the Church mean by "the sacrifice of the Mass"? Is Christ's sacrifice being repeated or re-presented? Why do Catholics call it "the sacrifice of the Mass" if Hebrews 10:10 is clear that the Christ's sacrifice was once for all? Whether you're Catholic, Protestant or just curious, this episode will give you a clear answer from the Catechism and Scripture on one of the most commonly misunderstood aspects of Catholic worship. Additional Resources: Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraphs 1362 - 1372 Hebrew 9 - 10 Council of Trent, Session 22 "The Eucharist is Really Jesus" by Joe Heschmeyer Join in the conversation in the comments! Have you heard this objection or do you yourself hold this objection? What has helped you understand the view of Catholic worship and the sacrifice of the Mass?
