Wisdom Keeps Your Blessing From Becoming Your Burnout

There's a version of wisdom you can get for free from a chatbot — and a version you can only get from someone who's actually lived it. Pastor Garrett's father-in-law has been a pastor for over 40 years, and one 30-minute car ride with him is worth more than any amount of scrolling for answers. In Exodus 18, Moses is about to learn that lesson the hard way — until his father-in-law shows up just in time to stop it. In this message from our Burnout Proof series (Exodus 18), Pastor Garrett Black walks through the moment Moses' father-in-law, Jethro, arrives in the wilderness and sees a problem Moses can't see for himself — he's personally judging every dispute for an entire nation, alone, all day, every day. Jethro doesn't just name the problem; he hands Moses a plan to fix it. It's a picture of the real difference between information and wisdom, and how God often answers prayer by sending the right person into your life rather than changing your circumstances. If you've ever carried more than you were built to carry, or wondered whether the burnout you're in could've been avoided, this one's for you. Scripture: Exodus 18 In this episode, Pastor Garrett unpacks why so many people are turning to AI for spiritual direction before they turn to their own pastor, and what that trade actually costs. He traces the one phrase Jethro speaks that hyperlinks all the way back to the Garden of Eden, and lays out the real definition of wisdom — and why it's different from information. He also gets honest about why "I just don't pray enough" usually isn't the real problem when nothing in your life is changing, tells the story of the voice that questioned Moses' calling and followed him for forty years, and shows what answered prayer often actually looks like. It closes with a simple, unglamorous way to protect a blessing God has already given you. Put the Lamb in the Middle | Burnout Proof

What if burnout isn't random? What if it actually needs specific conditions to survive — isolation, hustle, comparison, performing for acceptance — and the moment those conditions change, burnout loses its grip? In Part 4 of our series "Burnout Proof," Pastor Garrett picks up in Exodus 12 as Israel sits nine plagues deep into their fight for freedom — still stuck, still burnt out, still tempted to just accept it and give up hope. But right before God delivers them, He does something unexpected. He doesn't change their location first. He changes their calendar. Then He gives them one job: gather together, and put the sacrificial lamb in the center of the gathering. There's a reason for both. Your calendar reveals what you actually worship. And what you put at the center of your community becomes what you become. Isolation is one of the first signs of burnout — and gathering around something bigger than yourself is one of the fastest ways out of it. If you've tried everything to break free from burnout and nothing has fully worked, this message is for you. Your Failure Is Not Your Identity | Burnout Proof

There's something from your past you can't shake. A failure. A voice that said "who do you think you are?" A swing you took that didn't land. And somewhere along the way, quietly, without realizing it — you started letting that failure speak louder than God's voice. And that's exactly how burnout starts. In Part 3 of our series "Burnout Proof," Pastor Garrett follows Moses into one of the most relatable moments in all of Scripture: Exodus 2, where he sees an injustice, acts on his ambition immediately, gets it completely wrong, and spends the next 40 years hiding in the wilderness. The ambition was right. The application was wrong. And the failure became his identity. Moses didn't burn out because he stopped caring — he burned out because he started believing what one man's voice told him about who he was. But here's what changes everything. When God shows up at the burning bush and Moses argues back, God isn't arguing with Moses. He's arguing with the failure Moses adopted as truth. And He'll do the same for you. When failure becomes your identity, burnout becomes your destination. But it doesn't have to stay that way. In this message: why today's burnout is fueled by yesterday's unprocessed failure; Moses killing the Egyptian and what it teaches about ambition without formation; why ambition does not mean permission; why Midian was the hometown of burnout for Moses; the seeds of fear planted by one man's voice; a personal testimony about running from a God-given mission and being tracked down; and what you might be running away from right now.
