The Handmaiden & The Cookie Sandwich (Kinda..) with Cai Kagawa

"When I kiss the count will he taste like this?" It’s the erotica episode, sexy scaries! This week we’ve paired the period-piece Korean-Japanese erotic-thriller The Handmaiden (2016) with a frothy, decadent, guilty treat Cookie Sandwich by Erin McKenna's Bakery. With me in the scary studio is Cai Kagawa  aka @estelofimladris - a savant of all things costumes and table-top roleplaying games. Performer, streamer, costume designer and historian, sensitivity and cultural consultant, writer, there are no hats Cai doesn’t wear! If you’ve ever tuned into any of the award winning  TransplanarRPG podcast or any of the amazing actual-plays on the  HappyJacksRPG   network, then you are already very familiar with Cai’s work. You can now catch Cai on their brand new Twitch and YT show ‘Seams Right’ where they analyze and discuss the craft of storytelling through the art of costume making.   Truly we could do a mini-series on just the costumes and the fashion of The Handmaiden alone! Cai and I had a blast dishing about the glorious outfits, the twists and turns, the lust of it all, and the sinister shocking moments of The Handmaiden. Easily one of our top 5 fave “wtf is actually going?’ films. Treat yourself - check out the Handmaiden asap! Speaking of treats, thank you Erin McKenna’s Bakery  @ErinMcKennaBaked   for saving the day. We almost didn’t have a sandwich today! We are blessed by your baked goods brilliance, Erin McKenna. Delicious, delightful, and - dare we say? - decadent these sandwich cookies were exactly what we and The Handmaiden needed. Chef’s kiss, Erin McKenna for the win! Become Cai's #1 Fan today! The Velvet Buzzsaw & The Favolosa

“What's the point of art if nobody sees it?” It’s the FINE ART episode, dear scaries! This week we’ve paired the perfectly pretentious art-world-satire Velvet Buzzsaw (2019) with The Favolosa aka the Favorite sandwich from All’Antico Vinaio. With us in the scary studio is Rachel Berkowitz - a spectacular visual artist on the rise! Rachel creates surreal and soulful dreamscapes that pulse with rich emotional resonance. Her work is spellbinding and soothing, provocative and embracing, radical and rapturous. Rachel’s paintings have been presented by galleries worldwide, and recently the PRINCE OF MONACO  - yes, the actual, literal Prince - added one of Rachel’s pieces to the esteemed Monaco Royal Collection! Can you even?? Rachel and I dive deep into the high-stakes world of fine-art and mostly avoid getting murdered by killer art as we discuss the artist’s struggle to share their authentic voice and the tragedy of artists with bad taste. Nothing pairs better with an eye-opening chat about all things art than All’Antico Vinaio’s The Favolosa because this sandwich is a work of art. La Favolosa is a culinary masterpiece! Savory, creamy, rich, featuring a perfect focaccia and the most mesmeric application of spiced eggplant. Bella! Buono fortuna! We completely understand now why this one translates to “the Favorite”. We are so grateful for this truly one-of-a-kind, grand and opulent sandwich - thank you, All’Antico Vinaio! Whatcha eating & watching? The Fly & Langer's Pastrami on Rye - with Greg Berman

"...but now the dream is over." Hold onto the ceiling - for the first time ever, in the history of sandwich or podcast, we're pairing two MASSIVE classics: David Cronenberg's The Fly (1986) and Langer's Deli Pastrami on Rye. Folks, we were NOT ready! Joining me back-back back-again is the very funny and very silky (do with that what you will) Greg Berman- comedian, actor, tattoo artist, and fancy fashion appreciator. So great to have Greg back in the scary studio! This time, Greg shares the story of his nearly fatal bike accident, and how it's changed his relationship to his body and his art. We discuss ambitious artists and scientists, and what happens when science - and art - goes too far!  Greg's special Here For a Bit is available now! To help us celebrate our triumphant reunion, Greg and I could ask for no better companion then the world-famous, the classic, the iconic, the unforgettable and always right-on-the-money, Langer's Deli Pastrami on Rye. The famous "Menu Item # 19" is a staple of the LA sandwich scene, and for me it captures the essence of a pastrami sandwich. Langer's is the Golden Standard of pastrami sandwiches - thank you, Langer's!  Whatcha eating & watching? Under the Skin & Fish-n-Chips with Noël Stark

“Do you live by yourself!” This week, aliens are seducing lonely males and turning them into chunky salsa in Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin starring Scarlett Johansson, which we’ve paired with one of our faves - Astro Burger’s - perfectly delicious, perfectly fried Fried Cod Sandwich and Fries aka Fish-N-Chips, because the film’s set in the UK, innit?!  Joining me in the scary studio is Noël Stark - author of the steamy, sassy, smart and screamingly funny new romance Love, Camera, Action. Along with writing pulse-pounding sexy romances, Noël is a veteran film & TV producer, actor, writer, director as well as a former festival programmer for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).   Since we couldn’t legally make or legitimately find a Haggis sandwich (sorry, Scotland!) we settled for the next best thing: the iconic Fish-n-Chips sandwich! We got a perfectly crunchy and flaky, saucy and filling fried fish sammy from one of my fave LA retro-diners-n-burgers spots, Astro Burger. Thanks, Astro! Love, Camera, Action by Noël Stark is available in print and as an audiobook from Penguin Random House or Amazon, and you can follow Noël  on Instagram for all her latest book talks and many amazing podcast appearances!
