Evil Dead 2 & Howlin' Ray's Spicy Chicken Sando with Greg Hellings

“Groovy!” Just in time for the holidays, we get splattered in gore and chicken! This week, it’s mad auteur Sam Raimi’s grooviest, bloodiest, deadite-iest classic Evil Dead 2 paired with the iconic sizzlin’ kickin’ hootin’ & hollerin’ Howlin’ Ray’s Spicy Chicken Sando.  Joining me in the scary studio is Greg Hellings - sound producer, designer of Fish In A Percolator (a Twin-Peaks inspired table-top roleplaying game), indie game connoisseur, dev-ops engineer (whatever that means!), community organizer, and patron saint of one of the best indie-gaming hubs in Los Angeles - Story Games LA. Not only that, Greg Hellings is the proud owner of the actual EvilDead dot com domain, but according to him “there’s nothing there!” …or so he says! What could be there?! A groovy mystery! Of course the only sammich to match the legendary mayhem of Evil Dead 2 is the equally legendary Howlin’ Ray’s Spicy Chicken Sando. Perhaps one of the best go-to spots for Nashville-style hot chicken sandwiches on the West Coast. These sandos are juicy, big, delicious, but you better know before you go what you’re getting yourself into, because Howlin’ Ray’s has got spice levels available so high that they will have you, well, howlin’! Thanks for helping us hit the high notes, Ray, wooooooo that’s a seriously spicy and seriously delicious sammich!  Listen to Greg Hellings on Soundcloud and everywhere you get your ear-tentainment.  Play Fish in a Percolator - Greg’s all-original table-top game where you and your friends create a unique, Twin Peaks-vibe weird little town and play as its strange & mysterious denizens.  Whatcha eating & watching? Tell me about it! @scarysandwichpod & scarysandwichpod@gmail.com Scary Movie and a Sandwich is produced by Craig Lewis and recorded at KeyFrame Studios in sunny Hollywood, CA. Shin Godzilla (2016) & The Mama Mia with Darby Pak aka Chaotic Darby

“Oh no - my noodles got soggy!” This week, grab your clipboards and geiger counters, we are taking on the radioactive Shin Godzilla (2016), while we stuff our faces with the monstrously massive & massively delicious Mama Mia Italian sub from Dan’s Super Subs! Joining me in the scary studio is Darby Pak aka Chaotic Darby. Darby is an award winning tabletop roleplaying game performer, community organizer, facilitator, and one of the preeminent wise wizards in the employ of the wonderful Geeky Teas & Games hobby store in Burbank, CA. When Darby is not winning awards for their brilliant performances in actual play shows or slinging hot takes about the latest indie-rpgs on sale at Geeky Teas, you can catch Darby dropping knowledge about all things Godzilla! That’s right - you can call them Doctor Godzilla because Darby gets Godzilla on a subatomic level. WOAH! Of course the only sammich that could match Darby’s multiple Godzilla dissertations is the gargantuan Mama Mia. This tremendous and totally classic Italian sub comes to us from a genuine Los Angeles staple - Dan’s Super Subs. Nobody does it like Dan, thank you, sir!  Catch Darby’s award winning work on "Tales Yet Told: 2048 AM Voices in the Wood" (Winner: Best Ensemble Cast of an Actual Play (Podcast) New Jersey Webfest 2025; Winner: Darby Pak, Outstanding Player Performance - Rainbowtoll Fest 2025), and stay up to date with Darby at ChaoticDarby Carrd. “It’s alive!” This week we get into the facts and figures of one the most famous movie monsters with Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1994) and we’re feasting on the bounty of the Soft Shell Crab Supreme po’ boy from The Little Jewel of Orleans. Mèsi anpil! Joining me in the scary studio is Moe Poplar, an acclaimed table-top game designer, podcast producer, screen writer, Frankenstein scholar, and creator of AshyFeet Entertainment. This week, like a bunch of mad scientists, Moe, myself and producer Craig, try to figure out what actually makes a Frankenstein adaptation work - and what doesn’t. What do you keep, what do you cut? What remains relevant from the original source material to a modern audience?  Big questions, and even bigger bites! The Little Jewel of Orleans’ dramatically flawless po’ boy brings us all on a journey of flavor. As with grand science experiments and even grander culinary delights, it’s always all about the journey. The Little Jewel of Orleans is not to be missed! Little Shop of Horrors and Ggiata's Eggplant Parm with Couplet Comedy!

“Feed me, Seymour, feed me all night long.” This week we’re talking (and singing!) all about the classic movie-musical marvel ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ (1987) and the classic Eggplant Parm from Ggiata Delicatessen. Joining me in the scary studio are the award-winning musical-comedy group COUPLET, @coupletcomedy aka Marnina Schon and Micah O’Konis. We get deep on vegetarian-ism, carnivore-ism, and musical storytelling; how it was probably weird filming the “Grow For Me” number because the actors had to sing in slow-motion; and why, despite all the super tight harmonies and banging choreo, life down on Skid Row truly is a bummer. At the heart of our perfect conversation is an even more perfect sandwich - Ggiata’s perfect eggplant parm is worthy of its own musical number! Ggiata x Couplet colab, perhaps??? COUPLET are hilarious, heartwarming, and hot, but don’t you dare call them “cute”!! iykykyk, see the show to get the reference…speaking of, catch them next on November 16th at the Dynasty Typewriter.  Live and live-streamed! Lost Highway & Lynchian Sandwiches with Mary Lukasiewicz

"I love the AFI!" This week we honor the late great David Lynch by pairing his wonderfully nightmarish 'Lost Highway' (1997) with sammies from two absolutely iconic L.A. staples - Astro Burger on Melrose, and Bob's Big Boy in Burbank.   Joining me in the scary studio is the magnificent Mary Lukasiewicz, and wow, what an honor! Mary has worked on some iconic modern masterpieces, such as 'Dune Part 1', 'Blade Runner 2049', 'Sicario' and 'Arrival'. Mary and I dig in and dish about all things "Lynchian", as well as what the f*ck does "Americana" actually mean, David Lynch's superpowers of casting, and, of course, we grieve the absence of perfection in art (and, life?). Get deep and heady with us for every episode! Video episodes available on YouTUbe. Subscribe, Like, 'Ding Da Bell', etc, so you can never stop watching sandwiches and eating scary movies... umm, I mean... well, you get it. Monos & Arepas with Nic Adams

"We're not actually about to watch a cow get killed on-screen, are we?" Over the mountains and into the jungle, this week we're packing Arepas in our lunch-boxes, saying goodbye to our childhoods, and plunging into the carnage of war as we get unraveled by Monos (2019). Kids be crazy and war is hell! I'm joined by Nic Adams, an NYC-based playwright, producer and director to discuss fond memories of our childhoods while munching on authentic Colombian Arepas from La Maria Restaurant in North Hollywood, LA. This is one of our more soulful, introspective, nostalgic and funny episodes, but we are tackling some heavy topics - so please take care and mind the Content Warnings: teenagers engaging in sexually explicit behavior, war, animal slaughter, drug abuse, and suicide. About Nic: Nic Adams is a 2025 NYSCA grant recipient for his play, NECK DOWN. He is an NYC-based educator, cultural organizer, and theatre-maker. MFA in playwriting, Brooklyn College ('23). Adams’ work has been presented at Judson Memorial Church, Joe's Pub, The Bushwick Starr, JACK, and The Brick, among other venues, and by The BEAT Festival, The Performing Garage Presents, and The Exponential Festival, for which he’s served as the Producing Director since 2017. His poetry has been published online at B O D Y Literature, and his short play, Grief Leash, is represented by Tiny Scripted. NECK DOWN is a new play by Nic Adams, premiering at the 2025 Exponential Festival at We Are Here, an event space and production studio in Brooklyn.  Get scholarly with Nic Adams (#nicodemic): nniiccoollaass Eat at La Maria: lamariarestaurant Stay hungry and stay scared - and stay in touch: like! follow! subscribe! nomnomnom!
