Artem Yatsunov

A show about comfort foods and scary stuff with host Artem Yatsunov. Each episode we pair a perfect sandwich with a carefully curated horror movie, and we discuss, digest and dive deep into what the movie and the sandwich are really about. A love letter to the two best genres of food and film.

The Velvet Buzzsaw & The Favolosa

“What's the point of art if nobody sees it?” It’s the FINE ART episode, dear scaries! This week we’ve paired the perfectly pretentious art-world-satire Velvet Buzzsaw (2019) with The Favolosa aka the Favorite sandwich from All’Antico Vinaio. With us in the scary studio is Rachel Berkowitz - a spectacular visual artist on the rise! Rachel creates surreal and soulful dreamscapes that pulse with rich emotional resonance. Her work is spellbinding and soothing, provocative and embracing, radical and rapturous. Rachel’s paintings have been presented by galleries worldwide, and recently the PRINCE OF MONACO  - yes, the actual, literal Prince - added one of Rachel’s pieces to the esteemed Monaco Royal Collection! Can you even?? Rachel and I dive deep into the high-stakes world of fine-art and mostly avoid getting murdered by killer art as we discuss the artist’s struggle to share their authentic voice and the tragedy of artists with bad taste. Nothing pairs better with an eye-opening chat about all things art than All’Antico Vinaio’s The Favolosa because this sandwich is a work of art. La Favolosa is a culinary masterpiece! Savory, creamy, rich, featuring a perfect focaccia and the most mesmeric application of spiced eggplant. Bella! Buono fortuna! We completely understand now why this one translates to “the Favorite”. We are so grateful for this truly one-of-a-kind, grand and opulent sandwich - thank you, All’Antico Vinaio! Whatcha eating & watching? Tell me about it! @scarysandwichpod & scarysandwichpod@gmail.com Scary Movie and a Sandwich is produced by Craig Lewis and recorded at KeyFrame Studios in sunny Hollywood, CA. The Fly & Langer's Pastrami on Rye - with Greg Berman

"...but now the dream is over." Hold onto the ceiling - for the first time ever, in the history of sandwich or podcast, we're pairing two MASSIVE classics: David Cronenberg's The Fly (1986) and Langer's Deli Pastrami on Rye. Folks, we were NOT ready! Joining me back-back back-again is the very funny and very silky (do with that what you will) Greg Berman- comedian, actor, tattoo artist, and fancy fashion appreciator. So great to have Greg back in the scary studio! This time, Greg shares the story of his nearly fatal bike accident, and how it's changed his relationship to his body and his art. We discuss ambitious artists and scientists, and what happens when science - and art - goes too far!  Greg's special Here For a Bit is available now! To help us celebrate our triumphant reunion, Greg and I could ask for no better companion then the world-famous, the classic, the iconic, the unforgettable and always right-on-the-money, Langer's Deli Pastrami on Rye. The famous "Menu Item # 19" is a staple of the LA sandwich scene, and for me it captures the essence of a pastrami sandwich. Langer's is the Golden Standard of pastrami sandwiches - thank you, Langer's!  Whatcha eating & watching? Tell me about it! @scarysandwichpod & scarysandwichpod@gmail.com Scary Movie and a Sandwich is produced by Craig Lewis and recorded at KeyFrame Studios in sunny Hollywood, CA. Under the Skin & Fish-n-Chips with Noël Stark

“Do you live by yourself!” This week, aliens are seducing lonely males and turning them into chunky salsa in Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin starring Scarlett Johansson, which we’ve paired with one of our faves - Astro Burger’s - perfectly delicious, perfectly fried Fried Cod Sandwich and Fries aka Fish-N-Chips, because the film’s set in the UK, innit?!  Joining me in the scary studio is Noël Stark - author of the steamy, sassy, smart and screamingly funny new romance Love, Camera, Action. Along with writing pulse-pounding sexy romances, Noël is a veteran film & TV producer, actor, writer, director as well as a former festival programmer for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).   Since we couldn’t legally make or legitimately find a Haggis sandwich (sorry, Scotland!) we settled for the next best thing: the iconic Fish-n-Chips sandwich! We got a perfectly crunchy and flaky, saucy and filling fried fish sammy from one of my fave LA retro-diners-n-burgers spots, Astro Burger. Thanks, Astro! Love, Camera, Action by Noël Stark is available in print and as an audiobook from Penguin Random House or Amazon, and you can follow Noël  on Instagram for all her latest book talks and many amazing podcast appearances! Evil Dead 2 & Howlin' Ray's Spicy Chicken Sando with Greg Hellings

“Groovy!” Just in time for the holidays, we get splattered in gore and chicken! This week, it’s mad auteur Sam Raimi’s grooviest, bloodiest, deadite-iest classic Evil Dead 2 paired with the iconic sizzlin’ kickin’ hootin’ & hollerin’ Howlin’ Ray’s Spicy Chicken Sando.  Joining me in the scary studio is Greg Hellings - sound producer, designer of Fish In A Percolator (a Twin-Peaks inspired table-top roleplaying game), indie game connoisseur, dev-ops engineer (whatever that means!), community organizer, and patron saint of one of the best indie-gaming hubs in Los Angeles - Story Games LA. Not only that, Greg Hellings is the proud owner of the actual EvilDead dot com domain, but according to him “there’s nothing there!” …or so he says! What could be there?! A groovy mystery! Of course the only sammich to match the legendary mayhem of Evil Dead 2 is the equally legendary Howlin’ Ray’s Spicy Chicken Sando. Perhaps one of the best go-to spots for Nashville-style hot chicken sandwiches on the West Coast. These sandos are juicy, big, delicious, but you better know before you go what you’re getting yourself into, because Howlin’ Ray’s has got spice levels available so high that they will have you, well, howlin’! Thanks for helping us hit the high notes, Ray, wooooooo that’s a seriously spicy and seriously delicious sammich!  Listen to Greg Hellings on Soundcloud and everywhere you get your ear-tentainment.  Play Fish in a Percolator - Greg’s all-original table-top game where you and your friends create a unique, Twin Peaks-vibe weird little town and play as its strange & mysterious denizens.  Whatcha eating & watching? Shin Godzilla (2016) & The Mama Mia with Darby Pak aka Chaotic Darby

“Oh no - my noodles got soggy!” This week, grab your clipboards and geiger counters, we are taking on the radioactive Shin Godzilla (2016), while we stuff our faces with the monstrously massive & massively delicious Mama Mia Italian sub from Dan’s Super Subs! Joining me in the scary studio is Darby Pak aka Chaotic Darby. Darby is an award winning tabletop roleplaying game performer, community organizer, facilitator, and one of the preeminent wise wizards in the employ of the wonderful Geeky Teas & Games hobby store in Burbank, CA. When Darby is not winning awards for their brilliant performances in actual play shows or slinging hot takes about the latest indie-rpgs on sale at Geeky Teas, you can catch Darby dropping knowledge about all things Godzilla! That’s right - you can call them Doctor Godzilla because Darby gets Godzilla on a subatomic level. WOAH! Of course the only sammich that could match Darby’s multiple Godzilla dissertations is the gargantuan Mama Mia. This tremendous and totally classic Italian sub comes to us from a genuine Los Angeles staple - Dan’s Super Subs. Nobody does it like Dan, thank you, sir!  Catch Darby’s award winning work on "Tales Yet Told: 2048 AM Voices in the Wood" (Winner: Best Ensemble Cast of an Actual Play (Podcast) New Jersey Webfest 2025; Winner: Darby Pak, Outstanding Player Performance - Rainbowtoll Fest 2025), and stay up to date with Darby at ChaoticDarby Carrd.
