    Ch. 23.1, At Gilboa and in the Decapolis

    September on Mount Gilboa, between Samaria and the Decapolis. Public work is too hot: the leaders are hostile, Herod still holds John, and the two disciple camps are scraping. Jesus keeps the Twelve in camp so they will know the Gospel, so the city can cool, and so Herod can decide. They get childhood, Hermon, and a slice of the forty days—not to be told until after He leaves. Thomas asks for a prayer. John’s line is for the crowd. True prayer is the breath of the soul: unselfish, believing, sincere, intelligent, and submitted. Then He gives them the family prayer from Nazareth. Hello everyone, I’m Bob Kezer.     Ch. 22.2, Going Through Samaria

    Jacob’s well, late afternoon. A thirsty Jesus asks a Samaritan woman for a drink—and offers her living water. Nalda of Sychar mistakes kindness for flirtation, then hears her life named, then tries to hide in a fight over Gerizim versus Jerusalem. He will not let the dodge stand: God is Spirit, and worship is in spirit and in truth. Before the Apostles return, He tells her who He is—the first open claim of the Deliverer—to a woman the town had already written off. She drops the pitcher and runs. By sundown Sychar is at the well. Two days of harvest, camp on Mount Gerizim, and a night talk the Twelve only half understood: love is the great relationship, the cross is not the whole gospel, women have souls, prayer steadies you and worship forgets you.     Ch. 22.1, Going Through Samaria

    Jesus answers the charge that His Gospel is only for slaves and weaklings. In late June, A.D. 27, Jesus and the Apostles work with crowds of Greeks, Romans, and Syrians. One evening Philip reports that the Gentiles mock their message as a religion for slaves and weaklings, a gospel that would make feeble pacifists. Jesus answers that He came to do the Father’s will and reveal His loving character, that divine love still restrains, and that the Gospel is for all—Jew and Gentile, rich and poor, free and bond. He tells them the ascent to Paradise is a rugged adventure, that dying alone for the truth in your heart takes a higher courage than dying in battle, and that the noblest bravery is uncompromising loyalty to spiritual reality. That same stretch holds the lesson on self-mastery: not John’s path of self-denial, but a new life of self-control and self-forgetfulness, faith that a Spirit of God lives in the mind, and freedom to master desire instead of fear. When the strain with John’s disciples and the Gentile work becomes nearly unbearable, Jesus takes the Twelve up Mount Sartaba for three days of rest; they come down lighter, most of their troubles having shrunk. Then He says to Andrew, “We are going into Samaria,” and they set out for Sychar by Jacob’s well, into a seven-hundred-year feud the Apostles would rather have avoided. Loyalty to their friend holds them together, when Jesus’ teachings alone would not.     Ch. 21.2, The Passover at Jerusalem

    A man from Damascus asks Jesus how anyone can be sure He is sent by God, and sure of a place in the Kingdom. Jesus says a good father does not keep his children guessing about his love—and neither does the Father in Heaven. If you receive God as Father, you are His son. The evidence of birth from the Spirit is sincere love of your neighbor. That night Nicodemus, a wealthy elder of the Sanhedrin, meets Jesus in secret at Flavius’s house. Jesus tells him no one enters the Kingdom unless they are born from above, born of the Spirit. Nicodemus leaves impressed and confused. Later he finds the courage to help claim Jesus’ body. In Bethany, Thomas asks what rules the people should live by. Jesus says the Kingdom is first a family: love the Father, love your brother. He warns the Apostles not to mix a spiritual kingdom with slavery, poverty, and politics. When a Sanhedrin member named Simon confesses belief, the rulers erupt, and the work moves on to Samaria and the Decapolis. Hello everyone, I’m Bob Kezer.     Ch. 21.1, The Passover at Jerusalem

    Ch. 20.2, Beginning the Public Work

    In this final part of Chapter 20 — Beginning the Public Work — Jesus gathers His Apostles at Amathus and delivers one of the clearest teachings on spiritual unity in all the records. He tells James Zebedee that He did not come to make everyone see, feel, or think alike, but to set people free in their unique personalities while uniting them in one spirit — the Spirit of the Father Himself. You’ll hear the beautiful distinction between social uniformity and true spiritual brotherhood, and how the identical divine spirit within each of us creates harmony without erasing individuality. We also walk with the Apostles through powerful moments: Simon Zelotes learning how to lead a Persian seeker into the Kingdom without tearing down his old beliefs, Jesus’ tender instructions on the new birth of the Spirit, the quiet three-day retreat with Peter, James, and John across the Jordan where advanced Kingdom truths are shared, and the Apostles’ first simple ministry to the sick in Jericho.     Ch. 19.6, The Ordination of the Twelve
