TWO STOPS OVER is a podcast about filmmaking with two ruffians, director Nigel Dick and cinematographer Vance Burberry ASC, ACS. They have travelled the world together and independently, shooting hundreds and hundreds of music videos, movies and commercials and, in Vance's case, a lot of fish. Drawing from their film-making experiences over the last three decades these two mischief-makers will interrogate, question and cross-examine a different guest on each episode in their efforts to establish final closure on the time Vance tried to blow off Nigel's leg with a bag of fireworks during a location scout. Guests will include a wide array of reputable peers and friends working in the industry and at least one rock n’ roller who has had it with music videos. Our hosts are based in Los Angeles and, although one is technically a Brit and the other is technically an Aussie, it is hoped that some useful film-making tips and interesting behind-the-scenes gossip will be shared, not to mention passionate discussions about whether the craft service table should include Marmite or Vegemite.     The Industry Ebb & Flow, Doing Wacky Crap in Telecine, and TikTok Brain (w/ Guest Brandon from @filmlights)

    Brandon from the popular Instagram account @filmlights joins Vance & Nigel to discuss all things social media including how the elusive algorithms work and change, the phenomenon of TikTok brain, and the gap between having the expertise to create quality work vs. the know-how to post it effectively on social media. They also delve into Brandon’s filmmaking origins and how he’s learned and honed his skills while shooting a film over the course of 12 years.  Vance & Nigel talk about what they’ve been up to while it hasn’t been busy, Nigel talks about his approach to editing a project that he didn’t direct and Vance shares more about his underwater cinematography course. The guys share a couple of their favorite telecine stories, including the prank Nigel once played on the head of the post production facility.  For the final segment, we switch it up and have our guest Brandon ask Vance & Nigel a question!     Acting Person, Little Slivers of Light, and Win It in the Room (w/ guest Alan Blumenfeld)

    Actor Alan Blumenfeld has over 190 credits on IMDb, including a movie Nigel directed, 2gether. Alan shares insights on the differences of working in theater, TV, and film. He also tells us his process of translating unclear direction into something playable, offers advice to young aspiring actors, and reminisces about his first job post-pandemic working with Al Pacino on the series Hunters. Alan is also our first guest to demonstrate his craft live on an episode. Nigel and Vance discuss the movies they’ve been watching this awards season, including those nominated for the ASC Awards, and Vance tells us about the addition of a new award category he’s excited about. The guys discuss how music video and narrative cinematographers inspire each other, what makes an actor “A-List,” and both share their Harrier jet stories.     Founding partner of artist agency Intrinsic, Jonathan Silverman sheds some light on some of the misconceptions people have about agents and what they do. He delves deep into Vance & Nigel’s pressing questions exploring the right time to get an agent, staying on good terms with everyone, and his thoughts on big agencies vs. boutique agencies.     Netflix docuseries “Tour de France: Unchained” filmmakers, EP & Showrunner Ameila Hann and Director Jamie Batten, join Vance & Nigel to discuss the unique logistical challenges of capturing such a complex and demanding sport, and how they used the “inbuilt drama” of the Tour as a narrative foundation to tell real human stories. Nigel congratulates Vance on being admitted to the American Society of Cinematographers, and they tell us about a time sitting in the telecine room in the 80s, when Vance thought he had blown his chances of becoming a DP. Nigel explains how his passion for the Tour de France began while waiting to meet Britney Spears for the first time and how he went on to shoot at the Tour, as a one man band, two years in a row.     Rubber Suit, Underwater Frame Hog, and Adapt to Survive (w/ Guest Pete Romano ASC)

    Pete Romano ASC, renowned underwater cinematographer, joins Vance and Nigel and shares his interesting career path, eventually working on a long list of iconic films including The Abyss, Titanic, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, The Call of the Wild, The Life Aquatic, and For Your Eyes Only. We get to go behind the scenes with Pete as he shares stories working with the likes of James Cameron and Tom Cruise. Pete shares how his company Hydroflex, makers of premier underwater camera housings and lighting, came to fruition after making his first housing while working at Industrial Light & Magic. He also recounts what may be the silliest, or stupidest, thing he’s ever done in his career.  Vance and Nigel get inspired discussing their recent work travel experiences, from Spain to the Pacific Northwest and the Caribbean. They share some laughs at the insanity of shooting in one city to look like another, and the challenge of casting the right faces for a location when you’re on the other side of the world. Nigel reveals the documentary he’s been working on, centered around a saloon that eventually became the heart of the grunge movement.     Stoned on Set, Unsung Heroes, and an Alice Cooper Situation (w/ Guest Frances Parker, ACE)

    Editor Frances Parker, ACE shares her experiences editing multiple episodes of Game of Thrones, her history (and a nod to) working with the VFX department, and her thoughts on how editors support the actor. Fran is currently working on House of the Dragon. Some of her other credits include Andor, The Crown, Life, and Band of Brothers, for which she won an Emmy Award for Best Editing in 2002.  Vance & Nigel catch up on what they’ve been up to including their recent jobs and travels. Vance shares some highlights from NAB, tells his story about Diddy & Faith Evans’ “I’ll Be Missing You” tribute music video, and the night shooting a video for A Tribe Called Quest with Busta Rhymes. Nigel tells us about shooting for his stock footage library on his recent trips to Scotland and Norway and how he almost directed the “I’ll Be Missing You” video.     Cinematographer Mandy Walker, ASC, ACS shares how she got the lensing right for the 50s, 60s, and 70s scenes in the motion picture, Elvis directed by Baz Luhrmann, tells us about the tricky dance she does between accurately depicting period lighting while still making it look cinematic, and she gives us insight on ways to improve the lack of diversity in the industry.
