    123. Coldcard Fallout, Mining Firmware, and the BIP 110 Blowup

    In this episode, we dug into a rough stretch for Bitcoin infrastructure and security, starting with the Coldcard entropy exploit, the messy hotfix fallout, and related concerns around BTC Pay Server and Lightning vulnerabilities. From there, we explored how AI-assisted security research is rapidly changing the landscape: open-weight frontier models and tools like Ghidra and Wireshark are making it dramatically easier to inspect code, reverse engineer binaries, and uncover weaknesses in both open and closed-source Bitcoin software. We talked through the tradeoffs between closed proprietary AI providers and more permissive open-weight models, the hardware and cost constraints of running these systems, and why this new era of AI-driven auditing is likely to expose a lot of long-hidden assumptions across the Bitcoin stack. We also spent a lot of time on Bitcoin mining: how AI-based reverse engineering is being applied to proprietary mining firmware, what that could reveal about dev fees, remote controls, and operational risk, and why open-source mining infrastructure matters more than ever. We covered the BIP 110/Ocean controversy, miner and node power dynamics, and the urgent need for better decentralized pooling options and more home miners running their own nodes. We wrapped with updates from the 256 Foundation ecosystem, including progress on Bitaxe Proto and Bonanza support, Magina ports, ideas for cheaper home mining nodes, and upcoming hands-on workshops and events for builders who want to get deeper into mining and open-source infrastructure.

    122. Weak Entropy, Broken Trust, and the $90M Coldcard Fallout

    In this episode, we spent most of our time unpacking the Coldcard firmware exploit and the chaos that followed across the Bitcoin self-custody world. From our perspective, this was a painful but important conversation about broken trust, weak entropy, and the real-world consequences of software mistakes in security-critical products. We walked through how the vulnerability appears to have stemmed from a flawed random number generation implementation, why so many wallets were exposed, and how quickly attackers were able to sweep funds once the issue became public. We also discussed why this incident has reignited the debate around GPL licensing, open development, and the value of broad community review for Bitcoin hardware and firmware projects. We also zoomed out to talk about what this means for Bitcoin builders and operators going forward. That included the importance of defensive self-custody practices, why simply applying a hotfix may not be enough to restore confidence, and how the broader community responded with audits, tooling, data analysis, and emergency migration help. We wrapped by connecting these lessons to open-source mining development, including updates from the 256 Foundation ecosystem and the latest Mujina developer call, where contributors are working to build community-owned tools the right way: in public, with transparency, shared responsibility, and long-term resilience in mind.

    120. Precise Wattage Control Changes Everything for Bitcoin Mining

    In this episode, we sat down with 256 Foundation developer Schnitzel to dig into the latest breakthroughs happening around open-source Bitcoin mining firmware, Mujina. We talked through how recent work on Mujina is unlocking support for Antminer S19j and S19k hashboards, including mixed-board setups running on a single control board. Schnitzel shared what it has been like collaborating with AI agents to rapidly prototype new features, from board detection and fan safeguards to thermal protections and faster frequency ramping. A big theme throughout the conversation was that the modular architecture of Mujina is what makes this kind of experimentation possible, and why open source is such a powerful accelerant for both human and AI-driven development. We also spent a lot of time exploring a practical new use case: matching miner power draw to excess solar generation with precise wattage control. Schnitzel explained how he and collaborators are building a system that can dynamically tune miners to hit exact power targets in seconds, rather than relying on rough estimates or slow reboot-based scaling. We discussed the implications for home mining, grid-responsive mining, and larger industrial deployments, as well as the importance of stress testing, hardware experimentation, and community contributions to keep pushing the frontier forward. The episode closes with a look at where this work is headed next, including per-chip tuning, expanded control board support, and the long-term vision for a broader open-source mining ecosystem.

    118. From Nairobi to Mugena: Teaching Bitcoin Mining With Open Hardware

    In this episode, we sat down with Skot and Ryan to unpack Ryan’s trip to BTC++ Nairobi, where he represented the 256 Foundation and shared our open-source mining mission with builders from across Africa. Ryan talked about the incredible energy of the local Bitcoin community, the real-world use of Lightning and mobile payments across borders, and why Africa offers such a powerful glimpse into Bitcoin’s practical value. We also dug into the strong interest in open-source mining, from Ryan’s main-stage talk on the 256 Foundation’s mining stack to the many conversations he had with developers excited to contribute, experiment, and build without the barriers of closed hardware and firmware. We also went deep on Ryan’s hands-on mining workshop, where attendees learned Bitcoin mining from first principles, CPU-mined on a classroom Signet, assembled Bitaxes, and watched the network shift as ASICs came online. From there, we explored what Ryan saw at Gridless’s biomass-powered mining site in Kenya, the technical realities of balancing power generation with mining load, and promising local projects like BitShaka and Juakali. Throughout the conversation, one theme kept coming up: open-source mining is becoming a practical path for education, experimentation, decentralization, and entirely new energy use cases—and the momentum behind Mugena and the broader 256 Foundation mission is clearly growing.
