Left Out at Christmas

We all know what it feels like to be left out. Whether as a kid standing alone on the sidelines of a playground game or a single adult experiencing a non-invite to a group outing of your closest married or coupled friends, it's a strange feeling that can give rise to a foreboding sense of isolation and doubt. And, yet, we are neither the first nor the last to ever encounter the outside-looking-in-syndrome. In fact, in Scripture as part of the Christmas story, we find that Joseph and Mary knew very well what it meant to be left out in the midst of all the bustle of Bethlehem. There was "no room for them in the inn" (Luke 2:7), as no one made any effort to acknowledge, reach out, and offer even a semblance of sympathy to a young lady soon to give birth to her first child. Still, in the midst of all the mixed emotions that surely inundated the young couple, God came through in a glorious way despite their isolation and doubt. And, He's the Heavenly Father who still comes through in amazing and even miraculous ways during our times of being "left out" as well.

Solely Devoted — Encouragement for Christian Singles (featuring insight from Dr. Gregory Belcher)

Do you ever feel like, due to your singleness, others view you as “less than”? Maybe less appealing? Or less capable? Or less suitable? Or even less valuable to the Kingdom of God? Through my years as a minister of single adults and as a single adult myself, it’s a common refrain I’ve heard echoed from those across the age ranges (whether 29 or 59) whether never married, widowed, or if they’ve experienced a broken marriage. And if you hear that mantra enough (that you’re simply not enough because of your singleness), it can do something to your perception of who you really are. And today I want to encourage you that the only relationship that truly, eternally defines you is your relationship with Jesus Christ. Featuring insight from Dr. Gregory Belcher (MDiv, MBA, EdD).
