    Season 3, Episode 8

For more than three decades, civilians in the DRC have endured recurring wars, mass atrocities, sexual violence, displacement, and exploitation. Peace initiatives that do not confront impunity have repeatedly left perpetrators, command structures and illicit economic networks intact.   In this episode we discuss the human right situation in DRC, as well as the latest report, which documents how Rwanda-backed M23 fighters have exploited the Rubaya coltan mines in North Kivu and the Lomera gold-mining area in South Kivu.  And Amnesty’s major campaign 6 million Voices for Justice for Congo.    Further reading;  Amnesty International launches “6 million Voices for Justice for Congo” campaign, in renewed push for accountability for crimes under international law.   https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2026/06/drc-amnesty-international-launches-6-million-voices-for-justice-for-congo-campaign-in-renewed-push-for-accountability-for-crimes-under-international-law/  M23 abuses at artisanal mines and trafficking of gold and coltan to Rwanda, 21 September 2026. https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2026/09/drc-m23-fighters-abused-miners-and-trafficked-gold-and-coltan-to-rwanda/  Authorities must end support for armed groups suspected of war crimes  https://www.amnesty.org.uk/latest/drc-authorities-must-end-support-for-armed-group-suspected-of-war-crimes/   ADF abuses against civilians  https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2026/05/drc-rampant-adf-abuses-against-civilians-war-crimes-which-the-world-must-not-continue-to-ignore-new-report/  M23 detention sites investigation, 27 May 2025. https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2025/05/drc-m23-kill-torture-and-hold-civilians-hostage-at-detention-sites-new-investigation/  Amnesty International, M23 and Wazalendo abuses in eastern DRC, 20 August 2025. https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2025/08/drc-warring-factions-in-eastern-drc-commit-horrific-abuses-including-gang-rapes-summary-executions-and-abductions/  UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, DRC Mapping Exercise Report, 2010. https://www.ohchr.org/en/countries/africa/2010-drc-mapping-report TAKE ACTION Support Justice and accountability in DRC. Sign the petition

The Cost of Silence: Conflict-Related Sexual Violence in Ethiopia.  Conflict-related sexual violence is one of the most devastating consequences of armed conflict. Beyond the immediate physical and psychological harm, survivors often face long-term consequences including trauma, stigma, displacement, loss of livelihoods, and barriers to justice.  Across Ethiopia’s different conflict settings, survivors, journalists, researchers, and human rights organisations have documented experiences of sexual violence.   Yet, despite this documentation, the issue often remains difficult to discuss publicly, and accountability remains a major challenge.   This episode seeks to explore not only what has happened, but also the systems around it: why survivors continue to struggle to access justice, why these violations often remain under-discussed, and what meaningful accountability and solidarity could look like.  Host by Mekdim Hailu Legesse    Panel  Professor Shakuntala Banaji, London School of Economics and Political Science.  Jordin Bezabih-Ethiopian women’s rights activist  Suad Nur- Amnesty International, Horn of Africa Campaigner.  Further reading:  https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2026/03/ethiopia-authorities-must-investigate-sexual-violence-summary-killings-and-torture-by-ola-fighters/  https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2023/09/eritrean-soldiers-committed-war-crimes-and-possible-crimes-against-humanity-in-the-tigray-region-after-signing-of-agreement-to-end-hostilities/  https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2022/11/sexual-violence-in-northern-ethiopia/  https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2022/02/ethiopia-tigrayan-forces-murder-rape-and-pillage-in-attacks-on-civilians-in-amhara-towns/  Ethiopia: “I don’t know if they realized I was a person”: Rape and sexual violence in the conflict in Tigray, Ethiopia - Amnesty International  Ethiopia: End extrajudicial Executions in Amhara region, bring perpetrators to justice - Amnesty International
