    Susan Heartlight’s journey began as a single mother working three jobs when a social worker named Judy encouraged her to consider college. No one in Susan’s family had attended college, so higher education had never felt like part of her path. But when Judy told her, “Do it for your children,” Susan made the decision to apply. After beginning her studies with courses in dance and poetry, Susan met with a guidance counselor who helped her create a clearer career path. An aptitude test suggested she would be well suited for a career as a scientist, architect, or psychologist. Because of her love for people, she chose psychology. Determined to succeed, Susan took additional courses to strengthen her academic writing and improve her grades. Her leadership abilities soon emerged, and she was asked to serve as President of the Honor Society, where she helped raise more scholarship funding than her predecessors. Susan also volunteered at a battered women’s shelter, supporting women and children as they worked to escape violent situations and rebuild their lives.
