For others, distance is only one of many barriers. Vestina left school when she was ten. Her farming family was supporting ten children, and eventually there was no longer enough money to keep everyone in class. For months, she watched other children continue without her. Then a school bag, a few books, some pens, and a teacher willing to say yes gave her a way back. Five years later, Vestina was preparing for national examinations and serving as head girl. But the most remarkable part of her story may be what she did next: she helped four other children return too. This is a story about how surprisingly small obstacles can stand between a child and a classroom — and how sometimes the useful thing to do is much smaller than outsiders imagine.
