    S6 Ep 16 Josh Venable

This week on Dallas Famous, we sit down with Josh Venable, the legendary DJ who took over Adventure Club on 94.5 The Edge at just 19 years old and turned it into the show that broke Dallas music. Josh and his co host were the first radio station in America to play Weezer, thanks to a bootleg cassette from Pagfish, and they were early champions of Oasis, Toadies, Tripping Daisy, Old 97's, and Deep Blue Something before any of them were household names. We talk about what it was like growing up around the Dallas music scene in the 90s, the symbiotic relationship between radio, press, and clubs that made that era possible, and why he believes Dallas bands could go toe to toe with anything coming out of Seattle at the time. Josh also opens up about his best friend Bret Reilly, the loss that pushed him to start collecting oral histories from the scene, and his upcoming book These Are The Days, a 20 year oral history of Dallas Fort Worth music from 1985 to 2005. Josh now lives in Tulsa where he's the program director and morning host at The Edge, and he still fronts Panic, a Smiths tribute band that plays sold out shows around Dallas. Watch, listen, and subscribe to Dallas Famous for more conversations with the people who built the Dallas music scene. S6 Ep 15 Jeff Liles on Deep Ellum

Jeff Liles has booked more of Dallas' most important venues than almost anyone alive. He ran Theater Gallery when Deep Ellum was still an empty warehouse district, then went on to book the Prophet Bar, Club Dada, Longhorn Ballroom, Trees, and the Dallas Hard Rock Cafe before landing at the Kessler Theater, where he still works today as Creative Director. In this episode, Jeff breaks down how Deep Ellum got its name back, why Reverend Horton Heat got his start with no songs and no band, how a dollar per ticket deal brought Jane's Addiction and Husker Du to Dallas, and what actually happened the night Nirvana played Trees in 1991, including the real story of finding Kurt Cobain hiding in a broom closet and convincing him to finish the show. This was our first ever episode recorded live in front of a studio audience, with a special performance from opener Salim Nourallah. Huge thanks to Jambaloo for sponsoring the night. If you care about Dallas music history, Deep Ellum, or how a scene actually gets built from nothing, this conversation is essential. S6 Ep 14 Janna Wilson

This week on the Dallas Famous Podcast it's Janna Wilson of The Love Mic. Four and a half years ago Janna started hosting a Monday night open mic almost by accident, and it's grown into one of Dallas's most beloved recurring music communities. No competition, no politics, just musicians showing up for each other week after week. We talk about how The Love Mic found its home, her plan for a Love Mic Foundation, why she calls herself an empty nester every time an artist graduates to bigger stages, and what she's learned mentoring a new generation of DFW musicians while using the platform to champion mental health and give young musicians a place to find their voice for the first time. This is a great one, here it is. Watch to hear the full story of how a Dallas open mic became a movement. S 6 Ep 13 The Dead Thing

The Dead Thing Talks Grateful Dead, Dallas Roots and The Dead Summit This week on the Dallas Famous Podcast, it's the Dead Thing with Kenny Withrow, Scott Johnson and Reggie Rueffer. We get into how a bar residency at Club Dada turned into a decades long Dallas tradition, what it really means to channel Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir without imitating them, and why the Grateful Dead catalog is basically the standard of Americana rock. Kenny, Scott and Reggie trace their roots from Deep Ellum Art Company residencies to the Longhorn Ballroom stage, talk about learning the vocabulary of Grateful Dead music, and share how a rotating cast of musicians built one of the most respected Dead tribute communities in Dallas. Plus, mark your calendar for the Dead Summit on August 15th at the Longhorn Ballroom. Four Dallas area Grateful Dead tribute bands, a Bob Weir tribute set, bluegrass sets in the style of Old and In the Way, and vending inside due to the heat. This is a fun one. Here it is. S6 Ep 10 Vee

This week on the Dallas Famous Podcast we sit down with Vee Artistry, a Dallas based artist whose work spans theatrical makeup, burlesque, drag, and film. Vee's creative journey started in dance and theater, and that performance background still shapes everything she makes today. Her style is bold and intricate, built around larger than life characters that need to read clearly even from the back row of a packed venue. She's known across the Dallas scene for her signature tattoo coverage looks, her over the top costuming, and her ability to turn a face into a full theatrical statement. In this episode we talk about embracing vulnerability as an artist, pushing creative boundaries in a city full of talent, and why showing up boldly matters even when it's uncomfortable. Vee opens up about what it takes to build a signature style, how dance and theater still inform her makeup work, and what keeps her pushing into new creative territory. If you love Dallas creatives who are doing something different, this one is for you.
