Mic Drop #9: The Real Reason Men Are Lonely - And What Ryan Herrington Built to Fix It

In these ‘Mic Drops,’ I’ll be spotlighting my favourite, most impactful moments from past episodes of No Bollocks with Matt Haycox. These are the moments that hit hardest, offer the most value, and deserve to be heard again. Ryan Herrington went sober, lost all his friends overnight, and found himself alone in Bali with no one to call except a stranger from a podcast he'd listened to two years earlier. What happened next became the Bali Brotherhood. 1,000 men, zero marketing, built entirely on word of mouth. In this Mic Drop, Ryan breaks down why men are lonelier than ever, why the pressure to look strong is quietly costing them everything, and why whatever you're dealing with right now, you're not the only one. Why Most People Are Bad Negotiators And Don't Know It | Lousin Mehrabi

Lousin Mehrabi has spent two decades in high stakes negotiations and says the best negotiators are all calm, composed introverts. Lousin Mehrabi joins Matt Haycox to strip the aggression myth out of negotiation. She started in finance on the trading floors, handling M&A, IPOs and lobbying, until a year of corporate training in 2013 under professional negotiators, one from the French special forces, covering lie detection and profiling, changed her direction entirely. She now works from Dubai with companies, governments and hospitals on high stakes deals, divorce cases and suicide interventions, and reckons that in over 90 percent of cases what people say they want is not what they need. Donald Trump gets a proper dissection: his habit of taking agreed deals off the table and making you beg for what you already had, and why it only works with authority behind it. Hostage negotiation comes down from the movies to everyday life, from why negotiators never work alone to why you keep unreasonable people talking for the intel, with lessons from her mentor George Kohlrieser, the hostage negotiator who wrote Hostage at the Table. Matt puts his own deal record through her three pillars of credibility, competence and composure, and picks a fight with the Starbucks discount method of building a rejection muscle. Franchise Expert Reveals How Franchising Really Works | Cliff Nonnenmacher

Most people think buying a franchise means buying a business. It doesn't - and the gap between those two things is where most franchisees lose money. Cliff Nonnenmacher has spent 25 years and owned 12 different franchise brands, and in this episode he pulls back the curtain on how the industry actually operates - from why you can never truly own a Chick-fil-A, to why food franchises carry some of the worst margins in the business, to what really happens when a franchisor decides to take a location back. Matt and Cliff also dig into where the real money is being made right now - a wave of home services and trades franchises riding a labour shortage most people haven't clocked yet - plus the real numbers behind buying in, financing a franchise with an SBA loan, and why going it alone without an expert is one of the fastest ways to pick the wrong brand. Pandora Co-Founder Jesper Nielsen: Building a Billion Dollar Brand, Then Getting Cheated Out of It

Jesper Nielsen co-founded one of the biggest jewellery brands on the planet. Then the Danish state froze every account he had - overnight. In this episode, Matt sits down with Jesper Nielsen, the Danish entrepreneur who took Pandora from a €500,000-a-year business to a global giant and the biggest IPO in Danish history. But the real story is what came after: a routine tax inspection that spiralled into what Jesper calls blackmail, assets seized using powers designed for drug criminals, 17 front pages branding him a criminal - and a Supreme Court victory that still left him with a fraction of what was taken. They also get into why Pandora's owners refused to pay his earn-out while he drowned in legal battles, the "Pandora maths" behind the brand's relentless repeat sales, why franchising is the smartest first step for young entrepreneurs, hitting rock bottom and rebuilding by selling jewellery face-to-face on the German autobahns, and why he says he should have just taken the blackmail. How to Stop Being the Bottleneck in Your Own Business | George Rivera

Most business owners know they're the bottleneck. The problem is, knowing it and actually getting out of the way are very different things. In this episode, Matt sits down with George Rivera — a multi eight and nine figure entrepreneur who scaled a supplements brand past $200 million — to talk about the moment his business started suffocating him, and what he did about it. George breaks down his Buyback Time Formula: the frameworks he used to go from trapped founder to genuinely freed-up business owner, and how he's helped others do the same. George gets into the practical stuff — the Freedom Audit, how to identify what's actually worth your time, and why most entrepreneurs are attending meetings they have no business being in. If you're making money but feel like you're buried alive in your own company, this one's for you. The Business of Franchising and Building InLife Wellness | Scott Capelin

Most fitness businesses fail because the owner can't separate the business from themselves. Scott Capelin built one that runs without him. In this episode, Matt sits down with Scott Capelin, founder of In Life Wellness, an Australian-based Pilates franchise now operating across 60-plus locations in Australia and the USA. Scott's story isn't a straight line — he sold five franchise locations, built an ambitious eco-friendly gym, overcapitalised, ended up in court with shareholders, sold his home while his wife was eight months pregnant, and rebuilt from scratch with no money and a handful of reformer Pilates machines. What followed was zero studio closures across 60 locations, a pre-launch model that regularly opens with 200-plus members before the doors open, and a franchise that targets profitability from day one. They also get into the strain of financial failure on a marriage, why a stable home life is a business advantage, the difference between building a business and building a prison, and why Scott believes competition is largely irrelevant if you just do the job properly. Matt Haycox: Bankruptcy, Parenting & Why School Doesn’t Teach Money

This week Matt is in the hot seat. Repurposed from Dan Banks Nachmias' podcast Parenting Without the Manual, this one goes deeper than business. It's about where hunger comes from, what money actually does to kids, and how to raise children who can stand on their own two feet, without quietly doing it for them. Matt gets into growing up with money without growing up entitled, the invisible safety net he didn't know he had until it was gone, and why bankruptcy doesn't break you. Staying down does. Plus the one piece of advice he'd give every new parent. You'll have to listen for that one.
