Episode 188: A Call From The Dead

What would you do if your phone rang and the person on the other end had been dead for months? This week, we look at some very strange reports of telephone calls from the dead. These aren’t stories about hearing a voice buried in static or trying to contact someone on the other side. In these accounts, people answered the phone and recognized the person calling them. Some even had entire conversations without realizing anything was wrong. We’ll talk about a call that reportedly came at almost the exact time of death, a thirty-minute conversation with a woman who had already died, a woman who unknowingly called a childhood friend who had been dead for six months, and perhaps the strangest of all, a call received on a telephone that had already been disconnected. Episode 187: The Smiling Man / Grinning Man

We've all seen the pictures and probably heard some version of the story. A strange man with a smile that is just a little too big. But where did the Smiling Man actually come from? Turns out, that isn't as easy to answer as I thought it would be. The story takes us back to John Keel, a strange encounter in New Jersey in 1966, a few things that sound more like hauntings to me, and yes, Indrid Cold. I teased his story way back in Episode 70 as a tale yet to be told. Apparently it took me 117 episodes to get back to it. Then there's the Smiling Man most people know today. That story has a very different history, and once Deb finds out where it came from, she has a few things to say about it. So are all these smiling strangers connected? I don't know. I'm not even convinced they should all be called the same thing. But there is something damned creepy about a stranger standing in the dark and smiling at you for absolutely no reason. Episode 186: Black Eyed Children

This week we’re talking about the Black-Eyed Children. A subject we first explored in Episode 14. But this time, we're concentrating on the encounters rather than the theories surrounding these mysterious children. Brian Bethel's 1996 encounter in Abilene, Texas, helped bring the phenomenon into public awareness. Two boys approached his car asking for a ride, but their behavior and completely black eyes left him terrified. We also examine a 1998 encounter in a Portland parking garage and a 2010 report from an Ohio data center involving two teenagers who reportedly vanished from surveillance-camera view. We discuss the similarities between the accounts. The recurring requests for permission to enter a car or building. Are these unexplained encounters, mistaken perceptions, or stories that have contributed to a modern urban legend? Episode 185: Ghosts of the Tsunami

In the months after the devastating 2011 Japanese tsunami, people began reporting encounters with those who had died. Some saw figures wandering through neighborhoods that no longer existed. Others believed the dead had returned to visit the living. Then there were the taxi drivers. Seven drivers in Ishinomaki told a university researcher about mysterious passengers, including a young woman who asked to be taken to an area destroyed by the tsunami. When the driver questioned her destination, she asked him something chilling. “Have I died?” This episode, Deb and I look at the Ghosts of the Tsunami and the strange possibility that some of the dead weren't haunting anyone at all. Sometime in the fifteenth century, a nun in a German convent reportedly began biting the other sisters. Then, according to later accounts, the women she bit began biting others. Before long, similar stories were appearing in convents across Germany, Holland, and even Rome. This episode, Deb and I dig into the strange story of the Biting Nuns. Was it imitation, a centuries-old story growing with every retelling, or something the people of the time would have taken very seriously: demonic possession? The Grim Reaper may be one of the most recognizable figures in the world, but where did he come from, and why do people still claim to see figures remarkably like him around hospitals, nursing homes, and the dying? What happens when you build a subdivision over a forgotten cemetery? In Crosby, Texas, families in the Newport subdivision discovered that the answer might be more complicated than anyone expected. Human remains were found beneath the property, homeowners reported strange activity, and what began with plans for a backyard swimming pool eventually ended up before the Texas Supreme Court. This week we look at Black Hope Cemetery, what we know actually happened there, the haunting stories that followed, and the question that still hangs over the neighborhood. Were the families living over a disturbed cemetery, or did knowing what was beneath their homes change the way they understood everything happening around them?
