  4. 004: Owning Your Power

    02/16/2023

    004: Owning Your Power

Life: The Podcast. With Host Ashley Calhoun Episode 004 Guest: April Frazier, Confidence Coach   SUMMARY:   Are you ready to come fully into your own power? That’s the question posed by April Frazier, who is Host Ashley Calhoun’s guest on this episode of Life: The Podcast. A successful confidence coach, she’s all about teaching us how to show up for ourselves – unapologetically and authentically. Whatever our life stories, this charismatic confidence coach tells us, they deserve to be heard, honored and integrated. These are the hard-earned life experiences that help us grow and evolve. So why not celebrate our histories – even the bumps and bruises? April invites us to embrace our creativity and cultivate confidence in all that we do – which, as women, is so much. We don’t have to be trapped in the “strong woman” armor, struggling and unwilling to ask for help. After all, being open and vulnerable is part of true and enduring strength – the kind we want to model for our daughters. It takes bravery, as April learned firsthand when she dared to walk away from a high-paying, highly successful 18-year career as a software coder. The leap was profound – and scary – but from it came tremendous insight and the fulfillment of her desire to unleash her creativity in service of others. Today April’s coaching practice provides a structured, safe place where her clients are free to tap into their truest selves. We don’t have to be programmed or conditioned by the messages society, our parents or co-workers or spouses deliver. We can step away from the noise, get quiet and find clarity. “I’m here to do is help women clear the clutter so they can stand in their genius and their power and gifts,” says April. “That gets me out of bed in the morning. That’s what it’s all about.”    If you’re ready to come into your full power and confidence, the time is right to come on over and check out April’s courses @Good Womanhood. She offers both an email course and a more comprehensive course, “The Knowing Woman,” at this link.   And if you’d like to jumpstart your business or figure out your real estate roadmap, check out Ashley’s coaching website here or schedule a discovery call with her at this Calendly link.     KEY TOPICS:    Who is April? A wanderer in pursuit of self-actualization. Eager to bring her vision – and the visions others harbor in their hearts – fully to life.  In Another Life: April used to “sling code,” leading teams of software writers and navigating the IT industry for nearly two decades. She excelled at it – but was unfulfilled.  Freedom Is All: Although gifted as a code writer, April’s soul, energy and creativity felt compressed and constrained. There was no salary high enough.   Leaving Safety for the Wilderness: Nobody does that! At least not without lots of hesitation and second-guessing. April chose not to stay caged.  How Ashley has made a very deliberate choice in 2022 to say no to stress and instead create an intentional life that is nourishing, not depleting.  It’s Okay to Have Those Moments: Despite being all-in on her current journey, April still has those moments when she thinks about the security a paycheck represents. It can be like a siren song – until she remembers the trade-off: Personal freedom.  A Great Awakening: How the end of a relationship created turmoil that ultimately set the stage for getting really clear about April is and what she wants in her life – and it wasn’t necessarily all the things she was taught to do as a “good woman.”  The Danger of the Duty Call: You know you’re acting out of obligation rather than love when the act comes along with a “boatload of resentment.” Serving others has to be aligned with your values and heart.  Embracing the Strength in Surrender: The strong woman ideal – a transgenerational role model that is propaganda – does not serve us in the end. It’s an identity that does not embrace and fully allow for our humanity.  The Great Comeback: What April hears in stories of so-called failure are actually tales of triumph over adversity. It’s about getting honest, owning the past and telling the whole story – the good and bad, the growth and a view to the other side.  What It Looks Like to Work with April: She acts as a mirror, helping her clients to see their authentic gifts and inherent genius. Not what our families of origin or society or co-workers or friends tell we are!  Coaching can be uncomfortable and it’s an ongoing journey, but the payoff is enabling ourselves as women to “take back the goodness in womanhood … and all the gifts that (we) have to give.”  The Knowing Woman: About April’s course, which is designed to help clients slow down, get present and listen to their deep inner knowing.   Intrinsic knowing happens when we feel safe to explore who we truly are and be in touch with what’s at our cores. It’s like showering in the dark: No one needs to tell us where our body parts are! All that’s required is space and permission.  Parting Thought: Know your power. It’s just that simple. And it’s a lot!     QUOTABLE:    “I’m a woman that’s a wanderer in so many ways. I feel like I live in the wilderness of self-actualization. I want to create what I see in my mind and help others create what they for themselves.” (April)    “We live lives in these boxes and it’s time to break out of them and become the best versions of ourselves.” (Ashley)    “The bottom line is that there’s a distinction between what we’re good at and what we love.” (April)     “(Entrepreneurism) is one of the greatest personal development journeys you could ever take. I had no idea until I started a business that that was true … but in retrospect I’ve just learned so much about myself.” (April)    “I’m not dreaming about the money. I’m dreaming about the freedom. I like having my own time. I like making my own schedule.” (April)    “There’s nothing like living every day with a slow death because you have no idea what you were put on this earth to do.” (Ashley)    “The (romantic) breakup was also kind of a breakdown. And all that breaking actually created the great awakening of my life.” (April)    “We grow through the hardest times. Sometimes everything has to fall apart before it can be put back together.” (Ashley)    “I was so conditioned to think of myself as a strong woman and do all the strong woman things that it made it difficult for me to surrender, to be soft, to say I need help or I don’t want to do that!” (April)    “For so long in certain communities woman have been the strong ones and it has taken a toll on our health and our wealth. It’s time for us to take our power back!” (April)    “Let’s rewrite the past and the story we tell on the inside so that we can honor that!” (April)    “Part of what I’m here to do is help women clear the clutter so they can stand in their genius and their power and gifts. That gets me out of bed in the morning. That’s what it’s all about.” (April)     Further Resources/Related Links: (NA)     CONTACT/FOLLOW OUR GUEST: WEBSITE | LINKEDIN | FACEBOOK | INSTAGRAM      ABOUT ASHLEY: A Certified Professional Coach, Ashley is certified by iPEC and has also received an Associate Certified Coaching credential from the International Coach Federation. 003: The Chapters for a Best-Seller Life.

Life: The Podcast. With Host Ashley Calhoun Episode 03 Guest: Paige Dungan, Founder of The Front Porch Collective     SUMMARY:   When it comes to telling your story, no one can do it better – or more authentically – than you! On this episode of Life: The Podcast we’re finding out from a pro how to get the books we want to write out of our heads and into the hands of the people we want to read them. Paige Dungan, Founder of The Front Porch Collective, is sharing with Host Ashley Calhoun the step-by-step of what it takes to turn that literary dream (fiction, nonfiction, how-to, romance … you-name-it!) into a reality. You’ll come away with practical tips about the difference between traditional publishers versus newer self-publishing options, pitfalls that first-time authors want to avoid and the single biggest mistake Paige sees. (Hint: You’ve got to start plotting the marketing and PR plan before your book writing process is even complete!) You won’t want to miss the personal story this publishing dynamo shares about her journey as a mom and a professional trying to figure out and thrive in her zone of genius. Key takeaway advice to consider? Says Paige: “When you put something out there and life is pushing you with different signs to act on it, you’re crazy not to do it!” So listen to the universe, trust your intuition and remember that personal magic starts with claiming your own voice!   Ready to learn more about Paige’s brand visioning and publishing support? Click here to sign up for her mailing list and find out about the bestseller campaigns, book launch events and consulting options she tailors to writers of all kinds.   And if you’d like to jumpstart your business or figure out your real estate roadmap, check out Ashley’s coaching website here or schedule a discovery call with her at this Calendly link.     KEY TOPICS:    Who She is in 10 Seconds or Less: Paige is a “righteous dreamer” who believes that everything is possible and nothing is off the table, even if some of us need help getting a seat at the table to start!  That Idea that Keeps Coming Up? It’s not going away, but time is. So empower yourself and go after that dream.  Paige’s Origin Story: Always a bit off-beat within her traditional family, over time she identified her entrepreneurial bent and used her PR skills as a point of entry.  About Success Magazine: An opportunity to be a part of amazing campaigns and see mentors blaze trails with their own stories – uncompromised and in their own voices.  Losing Sight of Her Own Narrative: Paige’s journey through post-partum, pandemic and struggles with being there for her kids. Kudos to her husband, who found a game-changing support group that helped untangle the anxiety and paralysis.  On the Path to Mental Health: Talk therapy, meds and working through a year of mental and emotional challenge has been transformational for Paige.  Blessings in the Pain: It comes down to what we decide to do with the obstacle and hurt we confront in life.  A Leap of Faith: Recognizing that the life she’d known before was no longer the right fit, Paige knew instinctively (and trusted her intuition) that it was time to make a big change.  Word of Advice: The timing is never perfect, or exactly right! Sometimes you just have to start moving toward your dream.  About Ashley’s Journey as an Author: When she met Paige, the connection felt unmistakably like a bridge to the book she’d always known she was born to write.  Being a Beautiful Hot Mess: About how being fired by a client sent Ashley into a downward spiral but also sharpened her focus and moved her closer to her dream.  Three Words – The Pillars that are Guiding Paige’s Life in 2023:  Focus! Whatever you’re doing in the moment, be all in on it. No multitasking.  Gratitude! There’s power in catching what people are doing that is right (especially when you're frustrated or slipping into negativity).   Intention! Separating her work “in” the business from being strategic about time spent working “on” the business.  Step by Step: Give it just 10-15 minutes a day and watch your book progress!  Word of Advice: Creativity doesn’t just appear! Some days are more fruitful than others, but there’s no waiting on the practice it takes to nail down all the elements you need, like the characters or message or voice.  The Front Porch Collective: This publishing arm of Paige’s business is dedicated to helping authors define all aspects of their paths forward, whether self-publishing or seeking a traditional publishing route.  The Pros & Cons of Going with a Publisher:  The need for an agent to get in front of decision-makers.  Advances tend to be small (less than $10,000).  Loss of the rights to your material.  More in the way of publicity and book launch support.  Branded recognition.  The Pros & Cons of Going with Self-Publishing:  Full freedom.  Full rights.  Nimbleness and the possibility of a quick launch.  Control your own timeline and keep as much as 60% of profits.  Need to know how and where to distribute your book.  Need to have a marketing and PR plan/team in place.  Several thousand dollars to invest upfront in your own project.  No One-Stop Shop: Publishing comes in many varieties, so it helps to have a guide in navigating the many alternatives available.  Common Pitfalls Authors Encounter on the Journey:  Failing to plan the book’s promotion right from the outset.  Not allowing time to build the necessary network with podcasters and place promotional pieces across social media.  It’s Not Too Late: Your book launched but didn’t make a ripple? Paige can show you how to regroup and with a whole new do-over plan!   About the Options Paige Offers:  Call Me Maybe: Hourly consulting and Q&A for guidance on a limited basis.  DIY Workshops: Brainstorming with publishing roadmaps handed over to you to execute.  Full-Service Agency: End-to-end care for the author that wants to delegate the publishing process and leave it to the pros!  Ashley’s Books: It all starts with knowing her zone of genius and getting the right resources in place to support her publishing journey.  Being Your Own Magic: Bring the power back into your life by picking up that pen, writing that first chapter and claiming your authentic voice!      QUOTABLE:    “People will die with their dreams inside of them, and that is the worst feeling. But just getting started is hard and not knowing where to go is even harder.” (Ashley)    “We all have a story and never know just who our story can help.” (Ashley)    “Really being the voice of your own chapters (is) really something so many of us struggle with and especially as women because we have the voices of so many come at us, telling us their needs, that the narrative starts to get shifted real fast.” (Paige)    “Going through that year of trying to get back on my feet? I’m a totally different person now. I’m so grateful for that entire experience because I wouldn’t be sitting here with you or doing what I’m doing today.” (Paige)    “Sometimes your world has to fall apart – or what feels like falling apart – in order for you to focus on the things that really matter.” (Ashley)    “When you put something out there and life is pushing you with different signs to act on it, you’re crazy not to do it!” (Paige)    “You can self-publish and if it does really well and there’s interest, publishers will pick up self-published books ... Then you have kind of the best of both worlds.” (Paige)    “You can write a book and that’s fantastic! But you want people to read that book and interact with it, so the biggest pitfall is … you need to start thinking about (how to get press) six months out from your book launch.” (Paige)    “Start to tell your story because no one can tell it better than you. No matter what area of your life you apply that to, it’s true.” (Paige)     FURTHER INFO/RELEVANT LINKS  More about Success Magazine. 001: Through the Fire

Life. the podcast with host Ashley Calhoun aka Ash Your Coach Episode 001 Guest: Tavin Washington, Agent at Driven Estates brokered at eXp Realty LLC   SUMMARY: Host Ashley Calhoun is bringing us into a fascinating, intimate and powerful conversation on this inaugural episode of her new show: Life. the podcast, Tavin Washington reveals himself to be not only an amazing father, businessman and mentor but also the embodiment of what it means to take charge and go for what you want in life. He shares his experience as a young man being raised by a single mom doing her best to keep the family afloat financially and takes us on his journey from successful long-haul trucker to real estate entrepreneur. You’ll also learn how Tavin nurtures the most important relationships in his life (in part by making his own self-care a priority), what it means to be present as a husband and father, where he seeks counsel and what he would tell his past self if he could. We are also invited to share the very personal story of how Tavin learned to heal from addiction and depression by loving himself into peace. If you can see it, then you can be it, says this charismatic father of three. Clearly he’s a guy who knows how to find the positive, create the vision and then relentlessly go after his dream – as he’s already doing with great success as an agent at eXp Realty.   Reach out to Tavin! He’s a people person. No matter who you are, what you look like or where you’re going, he’s ready to have a conversation (about real estate or anything else). You can find him @Driven_Estates on a variety of social media platforms linked below.   And if you’d like to jumpstart your business or figure out your real estate roadmap, check out Ashley’s coaching website here or schedule a discovery call with her at this Calendly link.    KEY TOPICS: Brave. Selfless. Just a few of the adjectives that describe Tavin Washington! Ashley highlights the five pivotal relationships that shape how we live our lives, including: With Ourselves. With Others.  Health.  Money.  Work. Why Tavin has chosen to focus this conversation on his relationship with himself and his health: Raising three kids and staying focused on all the balls he has in the air requires Tavin to be aligned with himself – mentally, physically and spiritually. Words of Advice: Letting yourself go is letting your family go. Take care of yourself and you’ll be around to care for and support those you love! Check the Judgment! How Tavin defines himself within his marriage by: Claiming his manhood. Embracing gender roles. Raised by a single mom and sister under economic stress, Tavin recognized as he grew older the importance of having male mentorship and role models. Breakthrough: Through trial and error, Tavin found his way into true manhood by making mistakes and embracing that, even though he was a parent, he was still learning to grow up and come fully into his own. Family First: The story of Tavin’s (risky! abrupt!) decision to sell his profitable long-haul trucking business and move into real estate (so he could be there for his family). What Helps Keep Tavin Stay Grounded: His wife and kids. Relatives and in-laws.  Mentors. Stubbornness and pride are real for Tavin, who attributes it to growing up without a father and deals with it by listening to the wisdom of trusted advisors. Why is Tavin the Realtor for You? He’s relentless! His word is his bond. He’s analytical and knows how to size up a risk worth taking. If you could have coffee with anybody, who would it be? Tavin would get together with his past self and help him prepare for and navigate the future ahead. Open Book: How multiple surgeries tipped Tavin into addiction to pain medication – a tough, scary passage that included self-harm and depression. It also turned out to be an opportunity to “love myself into peace.” His People Were His System! Through his struggles and inability to get help from the medical system, his mom and then-high school sweetheart (now wife) walked with Tavin through his descent into darkness – and eventual recovery. Becoming Your Own Magic: You have everything within, says Tavin, who invites all of us to fearless and relentlessly follow a positive path to whatever we see for ourselves!   QUOTABLE: “If you don’t take care of yourself, it’s going to be very hard, depressing and a big struggle to take care of a family.” (Tavin) “Letting yourself go is letting your family go because you’re not going to be around to take care of them.” (Tavin) “It’s important to have individuality within your marriage so that your marriage can run properly. If you don’t have self-care, you can’t come together to care for each other.” (Tavin) “I think in your relationship it’s okay to allow a woman to be a woman and do what women are best at. And it’s okay to allow your husband to be a man and do what he does best as a man.” (Tavin) “It took me a long time to learn that being an independent woman ain’t it. It is exhausting. It is draining.” (Ashley) “Even though I had kids, I was still learning and figuring things out … Turning 30, this is the very first year of my adulthood and official manhood.” (Tavin) “I never had any true background in business but I always had the drive. And the drive is what got me to a lot of places and opened a lot of doors. Drive and spirituality.” (Tavin) “You can give kids all the money in the world, but time with you can never be replaced.” (Tavin) “A lot of people like to talk about their pain and injuries just to get sympathy from others or have a sob story. I’m 100% the opposite of that. I don’t want your sympathy … because all of the stuff I went through, I got through it.” (Tavin) “For the people going through (suicidal thoughts) right now, there is a way that you can find to love yourself through the pain that you’re trying to inflict on yourself.” (Tavin) “Magic can be something you can see or it can be an illusion. But no matter what you are seeing, it’s happening because somebody had the will power to make it happen. So if you want to spark your magic, just starting thinking positive.” (Tavin) “You can change your life overnight just by waking up thinking to be a different person. Yesterday is who I was yesterday. Today I’m going to make new memories to spring forth in life. I’m going to make new experiences and a new path today.” (Tavin) CONTACT/FOLLOW TAVIN: WEBSITE | LINKEDIN | EMAIL | PHONE | YOUTUBE | INSTAGRAM | FACEBOOK     ABOUT ASHLEY: A Certified Professional Coach, Ashley is certified by iPEC and has also received an Associate Certified Coaching credential from the International Coach Federation. That Perfect Chanel Bag: The Resale Stylist is there to give you guidance about how to find the luxury item of your dreams – without getting scammed! The Where, When & How of Emily’s Process: Based in Denver, The Resale Stylist works with clients all over the U.S. They focus on helping people identify their core goals. It’s a resource to help people declutter and work through often emotional life transitions/changes. Is the motivation getting rid of things as quickly as possible or making the most money possible? Figuring out where items go (are they donated or otherwise recycled) if they don’t sell consignment. About The Resale Stylist’s Birth: Emily graduated college in 2009 in the middle of the recession and was working at her first “big girl” job – with National Public Radio in Washington, DC. Doing the “working woman” wardrobe started quickly to feel bland and dehumanizing. Stumbling onto local consignment stores in Washington was a major “aha” moment for Emily, who for the first time had access to higher quality pieces at a much more affordable price point. Not only did Emily find fashion more economical, she also found that what she was wearing started to feel special and unique to her. A passion for – and expertise in – the consignment space evolved over time. She thought about her own subject matter expertise and realized that there was in fact a business model to be built around it – and The Resale Stylist was born! Here’s a Fun (and Important) Fact: Research confirms that the outfits you choose to wear actually do impact performance. Dressing for success is real! What we wear can actually impact outcomes of business negotiations, emotional well-being, financial status. It’s an important way in which we communicate who we are. Tip for Realtors: How you dress communicates a lot about who you are when you step into a room. And consignment is way to do it without breaking the bank! Bonus Points: In addition to being fun and economical, when we put even one or two fashion items a year back into circulation, we are supporting sustainability and a healthier environmental ecosystem overall. The No New Things Challenge: Just because it’s not new doesn’t mean it can’t be new to you – and just as much fun at half the price! Insider Tip: Remember that a lot of the resale apps support negotiation, so if you’re looking to save money then get out those bargaining skills and go! Being Your Own Magic: Remember that what we wear impacts our earning potential, happiness and even our hormones and heartrate. So dress in a way that makes you feel good because when we feel authentic and confident – the sky is the limit! Parting Thought: There are so many amazing and credible apps out there today that there’s really no excuse not to explore the world of clothing resale. You won’t believe the unlimited inventory you’ll find at great prices while being kind to the planet.    QUOTABLE:  “The Resale Stylist is for people who really want to embrace fashion resale and it doesn’t matter if you’re new to the space or you’ve been thrifting for 25 years … It’s a really inviting, warm, welcoming, fun space!” (Emily) “We collect all the information in one centralized place so that our community can get a sense of the apps and services out there that are going to be a really good fit for their goals and lifestyle.” (Emily) “I’m going to take the recommendation from the (Resale Stylist) quiz and put that into action. It was really helpful!” (Ashley) “A lot of our clients are downsizing. They may have had a home in the suburbs and are buying a condo in the city. They’re empty nesters and have closets full of stuff … We help them navigate that.” (Emily) “I started going into the office every day and feeling like I didn’t look different or unique. I looked like every other girl in that office. And over time as I grew my career and worked in other offices, I kind of found the same thing.” (Emily)   “The reason so much stuff ends up in landfills and trash is because it takes effort … so I work with clients to understand how much effort they want to put into it. Is it something they’re willing to do or do they just want to get rid of stuff?” (Emily) “You name a resale app and I’ll tell you all about it!” (Emily) “We all want to feel authentic and good about who we are and what we can bring to this world and how we express ourselves. And what we wear is a really important element of that.” (Emily) “I have an 11-year-old and I tell her, ‘How you dress will help your confidence.’ And then you play that little theme song in your head and you take over control of the room!” (Ashley) “Real estate agents need to have a lot of wardrobe to perform, so (consignment) is a way for them not to go broke looking good!” (Ashley) “Thinking about how we can be more conscious consumers is a really important element and reason I love championing (consignment).” (Emily) “When we feel good and feel authentic and confident, we’re going to bring our best selves to work, to our relationships and to our relationship with ourselves.” (Emily)   ADDITIONAL RESOURCES/LINKS MENTIONED: The Resale Matrix defines all the different types of digital platforms available.
