    The …. Bambiraptor, originally discovered by a Montana family in 1993 [was] turned over to professional paleontologists in 1995. The animal's body was about the size of a chicken, but its long tail made it about three feet long. With sharp teeth and claws, it resembled a small Velociraptor — the ruthless predator made famous in the closing scenes of the movie "Jurassic Park." The original skeleton of Bambiraptor — reconstructed in a lifelike pose and protected by thick Plexiglas — was proudly displayed at the conference. The conference was a Symposium on Dinosaur Bird Evolution held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in April 2000.  The fossil had been found in Upper Cretaceous rocks, meaning that it was about 75 million years younger than Archaeopteryx. But cladistic analysis showed that it had many of the skeletal features predicted to have existed in the ancestor of Archaeopteryx. In fact, paleontologists who examined it proclaimed it to be "the most bird-like dinosaur yet discovered" and a “remarkable missing link between birds and dinosaurs.” Bambiraptor was a crucial discovery that Jonathon Wells wrote about in his book The Icons of Evolutionthat the secular evolutionary scientists had long been praying for – at last clear proof that birds were descended from dinosaurs. Ya boo sucks to those intelligent design people – here was the proof that Charles Darwin knew would one day be found to finally give his Theory of Evolution irrebuttable scientific proof.     The reason Science Says that all species must have descended from common ancestors is that materialistic science abhors the idea that any of them were created. According to materialistic science, creation is ruled out from the start. If (as Darwin thought) the only alternative to the tree of life is separate acts of creation, and if creation is not allowed, then the tree of life wins by default, whatever the evidence. wrote Jonathon Wells in Zombie Science. So what they’re teaching our children, is what they have to, to make it fit with Darwin’s still unproven Theory of Evolution. The 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial was about a law in Tennessee that banned the teaching of evolution of the descent of man from lower life forms because it was proven science. Strictly speaking that point was correct then and still is today. Today the roles are flipped from what was the position in Tennessee. The teaching of the still unproven Theory of Evolution is taught today as if it is proven science and the proven science of intelligent design (covered amongst other places in Parts 5 and 24 of this series) is banned from schools.     Clarence Darrow, possibly America’s greatest lawyer ever, in his autobiography, The Story of My Life, wrote of his early years of school: Schools were not established to teach and encourage the pupil to think; beyond furnishing a place for keeping the children out of the way, their effort was to cement the minds of pupils according to certain moulds. … From the first grade to the end of the college course they were taught not to think, and the instructor who dared to utter anything in conflict with ordinary beliefs and customs was promptly dismissed, if not destroyed. What he wrote there accurately describes what’s happening today in our schools and universities in respect to Darwin’s still unproven Theory of Evolution. Don’t believe me?     Our betters, on the left of politics, have recognised the need for interventions with all of our very youngest children, because those very young children are born seised with a very dangerous idea. That idea is that God exists. Child psychologist, Deborah Kelemen, Director of the Child Cognition Laboratory at Boston University said that this view, that God exists, is incompatible with science. Jonathon Wells, in his book Zombie Science wrote: Intervention usually refers to an effort to help someone overcome an abnormal addiction. For Kelemen and her colleagues, however, it means convincing children to overcome a normal intuition and adopt the counterintuitive belief that natural selection can produce the illusion of design. According to the authors, this belief constitutes "scientific literacy."     In June 1925 John Scopes, the defendant in the Scopes Monkey Trial, visited New York for two main purposes. The first was to meet with the American Civil Liberties Union (the ACLU) to discuss tactics (which included the ACLU’s fervent wish to get Clarence Darrow off Scope’s legal team). The other purpose was to have Scopes attend a fund raising dinner in his honour at the fashionable Civic Club. The ACLU needed to raise money for the legal stoush in Dayton over the banning of teaching that man had evolved from apes in accordance with Darwin’s views. The ACLU expected that the Manhattan liberals would generously put their hands into their pockets to fund the case and in that hope they weren’t disappointed. Clarence Darrow was one of the featured speakers at the dinner. Frankly he was the biggest draw card. He was the polar opposite to the meek and mild John Scopes. Sure the crowd came to take a look at Scopes but the entertainment for the evening would definitely come from Darrow. John Farrell, in his biography Clarence Darrow: Attorney for the Damned, shared what Mary Field Parton (one of Darrow’s lovers) wrote to Sara of his speech: "His position is that only those men, and women, who bring light to man's darkness are important: the great men of science — Darwin, Pasteur, Pavlov — men of knowledge who dispel superstition, fanaticism, disease, cruelty, who make the human race more intelligent," she wrote. It has since transpired that the team Darrow signed up to join with, the ACLU, didn’t, to use an apt turn of phrase for this matter of a court case that was about religion versus science, practice what they preached.     Darrow … had grand matters to place before the country — issues of academic liberty, free thought, and scientific inquiry. He hoped, by calling scientists to the stand, to educate the public and alert them to the threat posed by rural zealots with their silly lockstep creed. And the defense was aided by public expectations. The country was looking forward to a spectacular debate on Monkeys and Man, led by the titans Darrow and Bryan. So wrote John Farrell in his biography, Clarence Darrow, Attorney for the Damned. Was that add on just a clever title or did it conceal more truth about the Scopes Monkey Trial than Farrell realised? Bryan may have thought that he was on the side of God, but Darrow knew that he was on higher moral ground, he was defending science and the right of the evolutionary scientists to tell the truth that man was descended from the apes and that Bryan’s God was dead. Isn’t that what the Darrow character was saying in the movie Inherit the Wind in that passage I opened the last programme with - for this insight and for this knowledge we must abandon our faith in the pleasant poetry of Genesis. Why? Because God was dead. Darrow could unembarrassedly say to William Jennings Bryan: I am holier than thou. Or could he? But for this insight and for this knowledge we must abandon our faith in the pleasant poetry of Genesis Thus sprake Henry Drummond, (Spencer Tracy) who played the fictional role of the real life Clarence Darrow in the 1960 movie Inherit the Wind which was based, ever so loosely on the Scopes Monkey Trial in Dayton Tennessee in 1926. So loosely that the play and the screenplay truly deserve the name fiction. This trial was backed to the hilt by the American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU, which was determined to uphold academic freedom. Freedom of thought. Or was it something else that they were upholding?     William Jennings Bryan was pitched against Clarence Darrow in the Scopes Monkey Trial – and it wasn’t a fair fight. John Farrell, in his biography, Clarence Darrow – Attorney for the Damned, wrote of one of Darrow’s more remarkable court wins – and he had had many remarkable court wins: He was a practicing defense lawyer, and in his time he represented … many a scorned woman like Emma Simpson, the socialite who smuggled a handgun into court and shot her philandering husband in the midst of their divorce proceeding. "You've killed him!" said a shocked clerk. "I hope so," said Emma. Meeting the classic definition of chutzpah, Darrow convinced the jury to have mercy on the widow. The types of cases and the types of clients that Darrow appeared in and represented were in an entirely different league to the ones that Bryan was used to. Darrow had been almost constantly in practice with the most remarkably complex variety of cases imaginable. Bryan had not practised law for 30 years. The legal contest was one between Darrow, armed with the best Samurai sword, and Jennings, armed with an airline plastic knife. But, having said that, the results weren’t what you would expect.
