    Community caring for coast

    Coastal systems are one of the most robust in the world, but human interference and development has made them fragile. One agency restoring resilience to our coastal ecosystems is Green Adelaide, which leads many coastal community restoration projects. In this episode of Let’s Talk Coast, Tony Flaherty, Green Adelaide Coast and Seas Team Leader, talks us through the many coastal restoration projects and community outreach activities managed by his team and the benefits and challenges of working with coastal communities. These projects make up a jigsaw approach that together build a wholistic picture of coastal care and conservation. This is an Australian Coastal Society podcast, produced and hosted by Gretchen Miller.     Estuaries, blue carbon and climate change

    What feeds our coastline, providing it with nutrients and habitat for juvenile fish? Where do people go to play and swim? The estuary. In this episode of Let's Talk Coast, Professor William Glamore from the Water Research Laboratory an engineering school within the University of New South Wales, explains how estuaries are both a fragile but robust environment, and discusses the important work that he and his colleagues have been doing for decades on re-creating intertidal wetlands. Will talks us through the blue carbon method, a policy document that was recently launched by the Federal Government, which sets out a method for restoring estuaries to produce a financial product called an Australian carbon credit unit.     Who owns the beach?

    Australians are passionate beach goers with many of us believing that the beach is free to all. However, beach access and the right to the beach are not always so clear in Australia. In our very first episode of “Let’s Talk Coast”, Emeritus Professor Bruce Thom and coastal engineer, Angus Gordon, explore issues around beach management, beach access, private ownership and coastal policy. Both guests bring a wealth of knowledge to the discussion around the question of “Who owns the beach?” and suggest a way forward in protecting Australians right to the beach through national standards. This episode was recorded on the lands of the Garigal or Caregal people.
