    South Korea's ex-president sentenced to life in prison | ABC News Top Stories

    Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been sentenced to life in prison over his botched attempt to to impose martial law in 2024. The Seoul Central District Court found him guilty of leading an insurrection - and said the 65-year-old was responsible for violently suppressing the parliament's function, and ordering the capture of specific people, including the then opposition leader. The ousted leader has already been convicted to five years in jail on other charges. Deputy Liberal leader Jane Hume says she doesn't support separately repatriating the children of so-called ISIS brides back to Australia. 34 Australian women and children are currently trying to leave a camp in Syria - but the government has barred one woman from returning home for two years, and has repeatedly said it won't repatriate the group. During the Morrison era, children from I-S families were repatriated to Australia - and Senator Hume says while she agrees with that premise, the Opposition is not inclined to split families up. The CEO of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation says the organisation will now have a gap in it's calendar after a decision was made to move the Australian MotoGP to Adelaide. The race will hold its final event at Phillip Island this year, after 30 years, after the state government refused a request from Dorna Sports for it to be relocated to Melbourne's Albert Park for a street circuit. Grand Prix CEO Travis Auld says October's Grand Prix will be a farewell to the track, but he's hopeful it will be utilised again in the future.

    There's been widespread condemnation of One Nation leader Pauline Hanson for stoking hate towards Muslim people at a time they're facing increased attacks in the wake of the Bondi mass shooting. Muslims are celebrating Ramadan but the country's largest mosque in Lakemba keeps receiving threats. Pauline Hanson's even criticised that Sydney suburb because Muslim people live there, prompting a strong backlash. She's also suggested there are no 'good Muslims'. It comes as her far-right populist party rides a wave of new-found popularity. Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg has told a US court the company no longer designs its social media apps to maximise screen time, as it faces claims they're addictive and harmful to young people Meta's lawyers argue the lead plaintiff had other issues in her life and any harm was not solely caused by her use of Instagram. But while the billionaire was being grilled in court he was shown multiple company documents that outline strategies like lifting screen-time goals, and how to increase teen usage. The South Australian Government's confirmed the Australian motorcycle grand prix will move to the state from 2027. The Victoria Government didn't budge on the organisers request to move the race away from Phillip Island to Albert Park where the Formula One's held, so the MotoGP's now gone interstate. The move is seen as a tragedy for the local economy, while also hurting Melbourne's international reputation for hosting major sporting events.
