Tales from the Low City

I listened several months after Mistholme ended and I found myself craving more stories in the same vein. And boy was I not disappointed. Tales from the Low City has the same richly exploratory atmosphere as Mistholme, but more melancholy. It’s both just as fantastical and more down-to-earth at the same time. The sound design is once again phenomenal, and the voiceover has the same soothing, matter-of-fact tone. I’ll admit I miss the Guide’s little idiosyncrasies and dry humor, but the window into the lives of a whole species and an individual from that species provided by each episode was more than enough to draw me back. The world is intriguing, the themes hit home, and the execution is so satisfying. Highly recommend.

I really love this series and the way it builds out a unique yet recognizable world. Each episode adds layers and depth to the world, but in a way that feels like a glimpse through a porthole: a narrow view into something full and living. I also love that the imaginative creature designs come with thoughtful considerations for their evolutionary history and ecology. It’s like this series was tailor made for my special interests.
