    We talk a lot about the challenges of nonprofit work—but there are some parts of the sector that are simply overrated. In this episode of The Nonprofit Insider Podcast, I break down my Top 5 Most Overrated Parts of Working at a Nonprofit, including: 5. The Flat Hierarchy Structure — Your organization can practice a flat hierarchy, but don't be surprised when your success is limited in today's modern times. 4. Conflict Avoidance in the Sector — Does conflict happen in the nonprofit sector? Absolutely. But let's be honest, we tend to avoid conflict a lot more in the nonprofit than in the for-profit world. 3. Being a Jack-of-all-Trades — You can learn many skills in the nonprofit sector, but so often you may not end up being a true master of one 2. Family-Run Nonprofits — Power trips are a real thing in the nonprofit space; family-run nonprofits can be even worse than you realize. That's before you add in nepotism and the glass ceiling that may exist. 1. The Mission — The thing that brought many of us into the nonprofit sector in the first place—and why it can still be one of the most overrated parts of the job.     Karen Houghton on Nonprofit Money Management, Wealth, Power, and if the Uber Rich Control the Nonprofit Sector

    If there is anyone that knows the in's and out's of nonprofit money, it Karen Houghton. In the first five minutes of the interview I asked Karen if the super rich behind the wheel of the nonprofit sector and her answers did not disappoint. Karen Houghton is not new to the nonprofit world. Her background as a volunteer, ministry member and community leader lead her to starting a 501(c)3 organization before burn out had her course correcting. Karen would later dive into the world of venture capital and that's where the embers of Infinite Giving, a financial technology and Registered Investment Advisory firm serving nonprofits nationwide, began to take shape. As a fiduciary investment advisor, she partners with executive leaders, CFOs, and boards to design disciplined financial strategies that strengthen reserves, guide endowment growth, and align investment policy with mission objectives. Under her leadership, Infinite Giving has been recognized by Fast Company for World Changing Software and by the State of Georgia as one of its Top 40 Most Innovative Companies. Karen has received the Women in Technology Woman of the Year Award, the Atlanta Technology Professionals Impact Award, and Berry College’s Distinguished Alumni Entrepreneurial Spirit Award, and was named one of Salesforce’s 10 Business Women Who Inspire. In my latest episode, I chat with David Paine, co-founder and president of 9/11 Day, as the organization prepares for the 25th anniversary of September 11. I asked David about the massive national service effort planned for this year's anniversary, why hunger relief has become such an important part of the organization's work, and how we can continue to make 9/11 meaningful for generations who weren't alive when the attacks happened.     I spent 56 hours in Washington, D.C., attending the 2026 Points of Light Conference. Was it worth the investment? In this episode of The Nonprofit Insider Podcast, I take you inside my experience attending one of the nation's largest gatherings of nonprofit and volunteer leaders. I pull back the curtain on my experience, including the atmosphere inside the conference and the people I met along the way.
