Why Research May Be The Most Important Skill In The Age of AI!

Hey Impactful Capitalists!I hope you’re all doing well. I wanted to share how my year has started so far because it’s been one of those stretches that reminds you why you commit to the long game. First, I finished my first conference-grade research paper in emerging market finance, Disaggregating Country Risk, Industry Exposure, and Required Returns in Emerging Markets. This one mattered to me because it forced me to slow down, think rigorously, and build something that could actually stand up to scrutiny from serious academics, investors, and policymakers. It was proof to myself that disciplined thinking compounds. Second, I wrote a white paper that I’m incredibly proud of, Why Research Workflows Are Breaking—and What Replaces Them in the AI Age. This came from a simple obsession: AI is powerful, but only if humans learn how to work with it properly. Writing this helped me clarify how judgment, creativity, and structure still sit firmly on the human side of the equation. Third, I turned 25. That one’s personal, but it matters. It’s a checkpoint. A reminder that time is moving, the bar is rising, and the responsibility to build something meaningful doesn’t get lighter. Finally, I ran my first event as President of the Hult Research Club: a live podcast with some of our most distinguished faculty, exploring why research may be the most important skill in the age of AI. Hosting that conversation made one thing clear: human work isn’t going anywhere. AI is just another tool in our utility belt. The real edge now comes from how well we think, decide, and collaborate. All of these are linked below if you want to explore them. As always, keep following the journey. I hope you’re all working, in your own way, to realize the dreams you’ve committed to this year. Let’s keep going.Godspeed, Max This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit theimpactfulcapitalist.substack.com

A Startling Reality Every year, a staggering 15 million people in Africa slip into poverty due to overwhelming medical expenses. Astonishingly, health insurance remains alarmingly underutilized, with a mere 0.2% penetration—an alarming statistic that highlights the urgent need for change. The Spark of Inspiration Enter Moses Mukundi, a relentless problem solver on a mission to transform this grim reality. During the crucible of the Covid-19 pandemic, Moses had a profound revelation that ignited the fire within him—the realization that traditional insurers across the continent were burdened by outdated systems in product development, distribution, and customer experience. An Opportunity for Innovation With this newfound understanding, Moses recognized an unparalleled opportunity for a fresh perspective on insurance in Africa. Undeterred, Moses made the bold decision to relocate to Rwanda, where the cost was a more manageable $1 million. However, gaining government approval as an underwriter proved to be a formidable challenge, consuming years of determination and perseverance. The Journey Continues Yet, through unwavering resilience, Moses conquered each hurdle, fueled by an unwavering commitment to creating a healthier and happier world. His vision extends beyond mere products; it encompasses a lasting legacy that will shape the future of healthcare in Africa and reverberate through generations to come. The 6000 km Journey Within with Segond Fidens

In 2015, 2 out of 5 kids in Rwanda had stunted growth. Why? Inadequate access to nutritious food. This was the environment that surrounded Segond Fidens, this week’s guest on the podcast. This is what inspired his mission. Africa is a continent that’s rich in natural resources yet, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), up to 45% of child mortality is caused by undernutrition in Africa. In a world where obesity-related diseases kill more people than hunger in developed countries, how can we explain the tragic reality of children dying of starvation in Africa? There are many reasons but the most glaring one is likely to be food loss. According to the World Resources Institute1, Africa loses or wastes up to 50 percent of its fruits and vegetables, 40 percent of its roots and tubers, and 20 percent of its cereals. This not only represents a huge economic loss, but also a waste of natural resources such as land, water, and energy. This creates a vicious cycle that undermines food security and nutrition for the most vulnerable populations. Segond Fidens is a Rwandan entrepreneur who wants to change that. In 2008, he was affected by the global financial crash which led him to go on the trip of a life time. He waited his way to having some cash, took a loan and went to China where he set out alone on a month’s long 6000 km bike trip on a 300 dollar budget. That trip inspired him to pursue his true calling. A calling to pursue a dream that everyone on the African continent must be fed adequately on a daily basis. Now, he is the founder and CEO of North Harvest, a company which, with their flagship product Park&Pick, acts as an online grocery store, coupled with a home delivery service in Kigali. By understanding the data behind the consumption of food in Kigali, he works with farmers, who can then supply the city more effectively, with less waste across the value chain. Are you someone who cares about food loss, the agricultural opportunity in Africa or the quest to find your calling? If you are, don’t miss out on this thought-provoking discussion that will challenge your assumptions and inspire you to make a difference. Do you agree or disagree with this perspective?
