Same studio. Same title. Barely the same movie. Two spirits for a double feature: Dark Arts Whiskey House Barely Legal Barrel Strength and Maker's 46 Bourbon. When he tries to reprogram her into a truly sentient soulmate, she develops needs of her own. Precision-engineered mayhem follows. James Wan and Jason Blum produce; Lily Sullivan (Evil Dead Rise) as the AI, David Rysdahl as the widower. Paired with it: Hard Truth Sweet Mash Small Batch Bourbon out of Indiana — one of the more unanimous pours of the night. Fair warning — the room did NOT agree on this one. One of us bounced off it hard. Tonight we're reviewing Dog Soldiers (2002) — Neil Marshall's debut feature, made for two million dollars in a Luxembourg forest pretending to be the Scottish Highlands. A British Army squad drops in for what they're told is a training exercise. They find a mutilated Special Forces unit. Then the moon comes up. Sean Pertwee, Kevin McKidd (pre-Grey's), Liam Cunningham (pre-Game of Thrones). Practical werewolf effects that still hold up. The movie that got Marshall to The Descent. Paired with it: Trader Joe's Islay Storm — because a British werewolf film demands a peated scotch. Trader Joe's private-label single-malt Islay, and it landed better than you might expect. The room did not converge on this one. One lifelong fan does not equal three-way agreement. So pour yourself something strong… stay out of the Scottish woods after dark… and let's see whether Sgt.     Welcome back to Midnight Movie Distillery where we watch the movies you've heard about… and drink the whiskey that helps us stay out of the swamp. Tonight we're reviewing Hungry — James Nunn's Louisiana-bayou creature feature about tourists on a swamp tour looking for a fabled monster alligator who instead find a rampaging hippopotamus lurking beneath the water. Yes: a hippo. In Louisiana. Which sounds absurd but is actually a legitimate real-world story — exotic pets escape into the American South every so often, and hippos kill roughly 500 people a year in Africa, more than lions and crocodiles combined. Madison Davenport leads. Joaquim de Almeida (Fast Five, Clear and Present Danger) is inexplicably in the cast. Austin Wintory — best known for scoring the video game Journey — wrote the music. First theatrical hippo horror movie in memory, and probably a while. Paired with it: Sazerac 6 Year Rye Whiskey — the New Orleans workhorse rye — plus, since we were doing Louisiana, an actual Sazerac cocktail made with it as our second pour. Two rounds because the movie earned it. We stayed close on the rye. The cocktail is where things got interesting — one of us was ordering another; one of us was walking away from the first.     Welcome back to Midnight Movie Distillery where we watch the movies you've heard about… and drink the whiskey that helps us reckon with the ancient evil under the church. Tonight we're reviewing Prince of Darkness — the middle film of John Carpenter's self-described Apocalypse Trilogy, sandwiched between The Thing (1982) and In the Mouth of Madness (1995), which we reviewed a few weeks back on August 12. Donald Pleasence's Priest inherits an ancient canister of swirling green liquid in the basement of an abandoned Los Angeles church. He calls in Victor Wong's Prof. Birack and a team of graduate-student scientists to study it, and they unseal what turns out to be pure primordial anti-matter — Satan, essentially, as a subatomic physics problem. Alice Cooper cameos as a homeless zombie and commits a memorable murder with his own personal stage-prop bike. Filmed for $3M in 30 days as Carpenter's return to indie filmmaking after big-studio disappointments. Shot by Gary B. Kibbe — the same DP as In the Mouth of Madness. Same producer, same recurring Carpenter cast members. You'll also hear us referring back to Hungry, our episode from last week — that was recorded right before this one, so some callbacks slipped in. Paired with it: Shanky's Whip Irish Whiskey — a black whiskey-and-honey liqueur out of Ireland, in a bottle designed to look like something you'd find in a haunted schoolhouse. Tonight we're reviewing Hold the Fort — William Bagley's 74-minute suburban horror-comedy that premiered at Fantasia 2025 and had every genre-press outlet using words like "silly fun" and "punches above its weight." Lucas and Jenny move into "Gruber Hills," a copy-and-paste housing development, and discover their HOA has a rather more literal definition of "keeping out the wrong element." When a hellmouth opens under the manicured lawns, the community has to fight off a fighting-game-style parade of monsters — each wave escalating in threat level — through the night. Cabin in the Woods meets Attack the Block meets Grabbers. Tight, unpretentious, and knows exactly what it's trying to be. Paired with it: Ardbeg Wee Beastie — an Islay Scotch aged five years, released as an entry point to the smoky peated end of the Ardbeg lineup. All three of us went the same way on this pour, which doesn't happen often on this show.     Do You Read Sutter Cane? · In the Mouth of Madness (1994) with True Story Bourbon Whiskey

    Welcome back to Midnight Movie Distillery where we watch the movies you've heard about… and drink the whiskey that keeps us anchored to what's real. Tonight we're reviewing In the Mouth of Madness — the third and final film in John Carpenter's self-described "Apocalypse Trilogy," after The Thing (1982) and Prince of Darkness (1987). Sam Neill plays an insurance investigator hired to find bestselling horror novelist Sutter Cane, who has disappeared along with the manuscript of his final book. Trent finds Cane in Hobb's End, a town that doesn't appear on any map because it's a setting from one of Cane's novels. Reality starts behaving like the pages of a Cane book. And then reality IS one. Screenplay by Michael De Luca, who at the time was president of New Line Cinema — a horror novel about a horror author, written by a movie executive, playing a movie executive as the villain. Paired with it: True Story Bourbon Whiskey — a small-batch Kentucky pour with the same kind of unassuming reputation that Carpenter's late films had before critics circled back.
