It’s for your own good (honest!)

The second in our series on Habakkuk takes a turn for the worse. How can a good God actively encourage such suffering? A last resort after God’s repeated warnings. But we have to see things from God’s perspective. There is nothing so bad that God can’t use for our own good – if we let him. God is still in control, even when we don’t like what’s going on. We only see a small part of the picture and we are blind to the bigger picture elsewhere. When things appear to get worse, it requires a deeper level of trust that God knows best and is working for our best.   Habukkuk #2 Habukkuk 1:5-11 Martin Ceaser Sunday 27th September   Find out more about our church community at www.bbchurch.org.uk

Tell God how you really feel

Starting a new mini series, Martin introduces us to the story of Habukkuk. In a time of political unrest and turmoil, the prophet cries out to God in longing and frustration. Was God even listening – why wouldn’t He intervene? Habukkuk’s attitude was actually a gift from God – He wants us to ask questions and bring complaints against evil and injustice. Questions help us explore and grow our faith in the midst of difficulty and suffering. They remind us of God’s greatness, even amidst the silence, and stir us into action. Trust is not being afraid to ask questions. Let’s not just accept what is happening – engage with God and the world.   Habukkuk #1 Habukkuk 1:1-4 Martin Ceaser Sunday 20th September   Find out more about our church community at www.bbchurch.org.uk

Pouring out my Spirit on all

In the light of hearing updates on an exciting summer for our young people, Martin reflects on the prophecies of Joel – as spoken in the book of Acts. Do we see God pouring his Spirit out on us? In the last days, the world will and is getting worse. These are the signs of the coming of the return of Jesus. But there’s a spiritual awakening too, with the promise of prophecy and visions. It’s not just for the grown-ups either. So let’s set an example to our kids and encourage them to encounter God in the everyday. The next time you pray will you also listen out for a word from God rather than just a tidy solution?   The last days Acts 2:14-21 Martin Ceaser Sunday 13th September   Find out more about our church community at www.bbchurch.org.uk

    From rebellion to new life

This week we are celebrating Naomi’s baptism – turning from her old life and stepping into new life in Christ. Martin shares some reflections on the importance of baptism and the difference it makes in our lives. We’re naturally inclined to rebel – against authority and God – that’s what sin. Nothing we can do can rescue us from that sin, we need someone to come alongside us and free us from the slavery of sin. Someone who can pay the price for us. To restore us to the Father – to God in heaven.   Baptism 2 Corinthians 5:11-21 Martin Ceaser Sunday 6th September   Find out more about our church community at www.bbchurch.org.uk

    The treasure is Jesus

A short reflection from this week’s all age service from Mike, on the treasure sought after with all our hearts. The treasure – the lost coins – was lost and now we can celebrate because it has been found again. This treasure is Jesus and our relationship with him – for those who have experienced the love of Christ but somehow lost it, the celebration of rediscovering Jesus is something worth sharing.   All age service Mike Sladen Sunday 30th August   Find out more about our church community at www.bbchurch.org.uk

    The apostles' support acts

This week Cliff helps us to explore some of the lesser known characters from the apostles. Barnabas and John Mark are almost sidekicks but they have a significant impact in the story of the early church. Barnabas was generous and consciously sacrificial. Open and welcoming. Barnabas was also courageous and forgiving - willing to give others a second chance. He encouraged and was discerning – he saw God at work in unlikely people. A man of great faith and full of the Holy Spirit. Barnabas took John Mark under his wing and discipled him in the way too. The Gospel of Mark is his handiwork and a permanent example to us in how we can live out our faith.   Acts (various passages) Cliff Andrews Sunday 23rd August   Find out more about our church community at www.bbchurch.org.uk

Who is the light of the world?

This week Nick explores Jesus’ claims about the light of the world – inset your own eclipse reference here – comparing two Gospel passages. In one, Jesus says we are the light of the world, illuminating the dark corners and bringing the light of Christ to our communities and beyond. The second passage confirms that our light is merely a reflection of His – our light is more than doing good, it points people towards Jesus. Whether a floodlight or a modest night light, whatever you are called to, make sure you truly shine.   John 8:12-19 & Matthew 5:14-16 Nick Treby Sunday 16th August   Find out more about our church community at www.bbchurch.org.uk

Freedom from being slaves to the law

With reference to our feelings to authority figures, Martin unpacks the challenge of the negative impact of the law. The law reminds us of what we have done wrong and where we have failed. It draws attention to the very thing that keeps us from God. The law was given to help God’s people live distinctively and reveals God’s light to others. Yet the interpretation by people actually imprisoned them instead. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, breaking us free from the twisted perspective of God’s law. Following the law alone is not enough to bring us into loving relationship with the Father. Only knowing Christ can truly set us free.   Freedom #12 Romans 8:1-17 Martin Ceaser Sunday 9th August   Find out more about our church community at www.bbchurch.org.uk
