10.4.26 The Meaning of the Meal (1 Corinthians 11:23-26)

A six-year-old was sitting with his brothers in church one Sunday morning. He noticed that, as part of the service, they were passing out bread and grape juice to people. He turns to his eight-year-old brother and asks, "What’s going on?" He answers, "When pastor preaches too long, they give out a snack so people don’t get hungry & leave." Unsatisfied with that answer, the boy turns to his twelve-year-old brother and asks the same question. He answers, "It’s some outdated ritual from ancient history, like from like the late 1900s." Still unsatisfied, the boy asks his sixteen-year-old brother. That brother puts his arm around him and says, "Little guy, this is something really special. This is when we remember what Jesus did for us. The bread symbolizes and points to Jesus’ body. The juice symbolizes and points to Jesus’ blood. We see, touch, taste the bread and juice and remember he gave his body and his blood to save us. We go back and think about the cost he paid to rescue us—his death on the cross. We look around, see that’s the same cost he paid to rescue everyone here who trusts in Jesus. Even though we’re all different, we’re all part of the same one family—God’s family. When we take part in the Lord’s Supper together, we meet with Jesus in a special way." The boy asks a great question. Why the Lord's Supper? Why the bread and the juice? There is so much to this incredible meal! Find out more about why we as Christians celebrate Communion in this week's message!
