Web Designer Habits - Forget About Inbox Zero

I used to love the idea of ending every day with an empty inbox. The problem was that I rarely achieved it, and trying to get there was exhausting. Eventually, I realized that inbox zero was becoming another way to measure whether I had been productive, even when I had spent the day doing meaningful client work. In this episode, I talk about letting go of inbox zero and replacing it with a more manageable approach to email. That can mean checking your inbox only a few times a day, using folders and labels to organize messages, turning longer requests into tasks, and shutting off unnecessary notifications when you need to focus. The goal isn't to ignore email. It's to stop treating an empty inbox as proof that you had a successful day. I'd rather ask whether I made meaningful progress on client work. My goal is billable hours, not answering every single email before I stop working. Web Designer Habits - Rethink Next Year's Services

Around this time of year, I start thinking about what I want my business to look like next year. Not just my revenue goals or pricing, but the actual work I want to be doing. This year, that feels especially important because AI is changing how websites are planned, built, managed, and marketed. In this episode, I talk about taking a fresh look at your current services and deciding what you want to keep, stop, change, or add for 2027. That includes paying attention to what clients are asking for now and considering whether things like AI chatbots, content workflows, automations, AI search, or other integrations could become part of what you offer. You don't need to add AI services just because AI is getting so much attention. Clients need problems solved, not another shiny tool. Start with the problems your existing clients are bringing to you, choose one potential service to experiment with, and test it in your own business before you decide whether it belongs on your service list. Web Designer Habits - Send End-of-Year Reminders

Once the Halloween candy shows up at Costco, the rest of the year is basically over. At least, that's how it can feel when you run a web design business. September becomes October, clients start thinking about Black Friday and holiday promotions, and suddenly everyone remembers the website updates they wanted finished before the end of the year. In this episode, I talk about why I start reminding clients about year-end work before the year actually feels like it's ending. Your clients aren't watching your project calendar, and they may not realize that the request they're planning to send in November really needs to be discussed in September. Reaching out early gives them time to plan and gives you a better chance of managing your schedule instead of reacting to last-minute requests. I'll also share some of the things to ask clients about, including Black Friday, Giving Tuesday, holiday hours, promotions, events, product updates, and other time-sensitive changes. The goal isn't to pack every available hour with work through December. It's to get the work you do want on your calendar early enough that you can finish it without sacrificing your own holiday break. Web Designer Habits - Start Your End-of-Year Money Review

September may seem early to start thinking about year-end bookkeeping, but that's exactly why I'm starting now. Waiting until December can mean discovering unpaid invoices, missing receipts, forgotten subscriptions, or unexpected expenses when there's very little time left to do anything about them. In this episode, I talk about adding an extra 30 to 60 minutes to your regular bookkeeping routine each week. This isn't about finishing your year-end bookkeeping months early. It's about taking a closer look at your invoicing, income, expenses, receipts, and recurring charges so you have time to catch anything that needs attention. I also share some of the things I'm reviewing in my own business, including outstanding invoices, receipts that still need to be scanned, subscriptions I may no longer need, and the income I expect between now and the end of the year. A little extra attention now can mean fewer financial loose ends waiting for you when January arrives. Web Designer Habits Revisit Your Own Website

Web designers are great at spotting what needs improvement on someone else's website, but our own websites can be a different story. We see them so often that it's easy to stop noticing the outdated photo, old portfolio project, service we don't offer anymore, or copy that no longer sounds like us. In this episode, I talk about why fall is a great time to revisit your own website and start thinking about what you'd like to change before the new year. I'm doing exactly that with my own websites right now, but instead of spending my entire December holiday break redesigning one of them, I'm starting early and giving myself time to work on things a little at a time. This week's habit isn't about completing a redesign. Start by looking at your website like a prospective client, making a list of what needs attention, and gathering inspiration. Review your content, services, pricing, portfolio, testimonials, photos, colors, fonts, logo, and overall design. Then decide what you'd like to tackle over the next few months. Web Designer Habits - Schedule Business-Building Time

As web designers, we spend a lot of time thinking about other people's businesses. We help clients rethink their websites, promote new services, solve problems, and turn their ideas into something real. Our own ideas don't always get that same attention. In this episode, I talk about why I added a three-hour block every Friday afternoon that's dedicated entirely to working on my own business. This isn't admin time or an opportunity to catch up on email and invoices. I use it to redesign my website, brainstorm lead magnets, develop Web Designer Habits, think about ways to run my business better and make more money, and explore ideas I'm excited about. I also share how I've created a custom GPT to act as a business coach and why I've found it helpful to have a place to work through those ideas. Your business-building time doesn't have to be three hours or happen on Friday. The important part is putting it on your calendar, protecting it from the practical stuff, and giving yourself regular time to think about what could be next. Web Designer Habits Move Your Body Daily

When you work at a computer all day, it's surprisingly easy to spend hours sitting in the same place. You might get up for coffee, lunch, or to let the dog out, but that doesn't necessarily mean you've taken a real break from work. In this episode, I talk about making daily movement part of your routine as a web designer. I love walking, but walking isn't the right choice for everyone. You can stretch, swim, garden, dance, exercise from a chair, go to the gym, or find something else that works for your body and your abilities. This habit isn't about becoming more athletic or adding another goal to your list. It's about getting away from your computer, changing your surroundings, and giving your brain permission to stop thinking about websites, clients, deadlines, and your to-do list for a little while. Sometimes that's exactly what you need to return to your desk with a clearer head. Web Designers Habits Schedule One In-Person Networking Event

With WordCamp US happening this week, I’ve been thinking about how valuable in-person events have been throughout my career. The sessions are great, but often the conversations between sessions, meeting someone you’ve only known online, or making an unexpected connection can be just as valuable. In this episode, I talk about why in-person networking deserves a place in your marketing mix, especially when leads are inconsistent and relying entirely on the internet to bring in new business can feel unpredictable. You don’t need to become a full-time networker or attend every conference. The habit this week is simply to choose one event and get it on your calendar. I’ll share ideas for finding the right event, budgeting for conferences and networking, looking outside your usual circle, and following up with the people you meet. Whether it’s a WordCamp, WordPress meetup, BNI meeting, Chamber event, or an industry conference filled with potential clients, one good event can introduce you to people who may never have found you online.
