The Person Who Was Hurt Gets A Recovery Too with Gen Stoney

Everybody asks how the person getting sober is doing. How many days do they have? Are they going to meetings? How’s treatment? Are they feeling better? Meanwhile, you’re standing there thinking: Does anybody want to know how the hell I’m doing? Because loving someone through addiction changes you. Maybe you became the fixer. The detective. The financial manager. The excuse-maker. The parent to another adult. The CEO quietly covering for an executive. The mom trying to keep the kids okay. The spouse sleeping with one eye open. And then they get sober. Everyone exhales. But your body, your relationships, and your identity may not magically get the memo. In this episode of The Unapologetic Woman, we’re talking about the recovery nobody talks about enough: the recovery of the person who stood beside the addiction. I share what this has looked like from both sides—including the ways my own addiction disrupted my entire family system, why some relationships changed when I no longer needed rescuing, and a conversation with my grandma I’ll never forget: “I never knew that you could love someone to death.” Because sometimes what looks like love—fixing, covering, rescuing, paying, protecting, cleaning up the mess—can quietly become the very thing keeping everyone stuck. And when the emergency finally ends, you may be left with a question you never expected to ask: Who am I when I’m no longer organizing my life around somebody else’s addiction? This conversation is for the spouse who is grateful and furious. The parent who cannot stop waiting for the phone call. The family member exhausted from holding everything together. The leader or business owner who has spent years compensating for someone else’s substance use. And the person in recovery who is ready to understand that sobriety doesn’t automatically repair everything their addiction touched. You can love someone deeply without abandoning yourself. You can be grateful they’re alive and still be angry about what happened while they were disappearing. And you do not have to keep saving people to be worthy of love. Recovery doesn’t belong only to the person who used the substance. Healing belongs to everyone who had to rearrange themselves around it. Listen to this one with an open heart—and if there’s someone in your life who has quietly carried the weight of another person’s addiction, send it to them. They may need to hear that their recovery matters, too. Trust Doesn’t Return Just Because They Got Sober with Gen Stoney

“But I’m sober now. What else do you want from me?” If you’ve ever said that—or loved someone who did—this conversation matters. Because getting sober can stop the emergency. It doesn’t automatically heal everything the emergency touched. 🎉For the 100th episode of The Unapologetic Woman, Gen is having one of the most honest conversations in recovery: what happens after someone gets sober, when one person is ready to move forward…and the people who love them are still trying to figure out if it’s finally safe to exhale. The sober person may be thinking: I’m doing everything you asked me to do. Why don’t you believe me yet? While their partner, parent, child, friend, or family member may quietly be thinking: Because I believed you the last 47 times. Neither person has to become the villain. Sobriety deserves to be celebrated. And the people who lived beside the addiction do not owe anyone instant trust as a sobriety gift. In this deeply personal Episode 100, Gen talks about the amends that took her years to fully understand, rebuilding trust through actions instead of promises, what the person who was hurt may need in order to heal, and why sometimes the relationship itself needs a recovery too. Because trust isn't rebuilt through one incredible conversation. It is built through evidence. Consistency. Honesty. Follow-through. Ordinary Tuesdays where you said you'd be home at 8…and you're home at 8. And this conversation isn't only for the person who got sober. It's for the wife who still checks. The husband who wants to believe her. The mother who's afraid to get her hopes up again. The family that thought everything would finally be okay once the drinking stopped. The college student wondering how the hell they're supposed to build a sober life while everyone around them seems to be drinking. And the leader, university, or organization asking an incredibly important question: How do we actually support recovery without enabling—and create environments where people can recover, rebuild and thrive? Because sobriety can save a life. Recovery teaches us how to live one. And trust can return. Relationships can heal. Families can rebuild. Lives can become profoundly different after addiction—not because everyone agrees to forget what happened, but because enough new experiences are created that the past is no longer the only evidence. 100 episodes in, we're not just talking about how to stop destroying your life. We're talking about how to build one you don't want to escape from. 🎧 Listen to Episode 100—and send this one to the person who keeps wondering why the relationship still hurts even though the drinking or using has stopped. And if this conversation belongs inside your college, university, workplace, leadership team, or organization, Gen Stoney is available for speaking, workshops and recovery-focused consulting. Love Should Not Require A Constant Emergency with Gen Stoney

What if the thing you’ve been calling “passion”… is actually the relief that comes after chaos? You fight. Someone threatens to leave. There’s crying. Maybe someone relapses. Someone packs a bag. Somebody sends the 19 texts. Then comes the four-hour conversation, the apologies, the promises, the incredible makeup sex and the “we’re going to do things differently this time.” And suddenly? You feel closer than you’ve felt in months. Until life gets normal again. And somehow… normal doesn’t feel like enough. In Episode 99 of The Unapologetic Woman, Gen is going there: What happens when chaos has become so familiar that peace starts to feel boring—or even suspicious? This isn’t an episode about labeling your relationship or telling you whether to stay or leave. It’s about getting curious about what you’ve learned to call love, passion, connection and intimacy. Because healthy relationships still have conflict. But conflict doesn’t have to threaten the entire existence of the relationship every single time. And maybe nobody checking phones, storming out, threatening divorce, disappearing, begging, chasing or apologizing at 2:00 a.m. isn't boring. Maybe it’s progress. Gen gets deeply personal about her own marriage and recovery, the years she blamed and nitpicked instead of looking at what was happening inside of her, the fear of letting someone truly know her, and the difference between taking personal responsibility and taking responsibility for someone else’s behavior. And then comes the question you might not be able to unhear: If the drama disappeared tomorrow… what would actually be left between you? This episode is for the woman who has ever mistaken intensity for intimacy. The sober woman learning what healthy connection actually feels like. The person who keeps finding herself in relationships filled with rupture and reunion. And the couple wondering why peace suddenly feels strangely uncomfortable. Because love doesn't have to hurt before it gets tender. You don't have to manufacture an emergency to make someone turn toward you. And peace isn't the absence of love. Sometimes peace is what love finally feels like when nobody has to earn connection through pain. 🎧 Listen with your coffee, on your walk, or alone in the car when you're ready to get curious about the difference between chemistry, chaos and genuine connection. And if you have a friend who keeps saying, “But when we're good, we're SO good…” send her this episode. She might need this conversation more than she knows. Your Standards Are Not A Punishment with Gen Stoney

What if you already know what your standard is… you’re just terrified of what honoring it might cost you? Will he leave? Will your family get angry? Will they call you selfish, difficult, dramatic, unforgiving—or tell you that you’ve changed? Maybe you have changed. Good. Somewhere along the way, a lot of women learned that having standards meant being high-maintenance, controlling, rigid, or asking for too much. Especially if you have a history of addiction, codependency, people-pleasing, chaotic relationships, or abandoning yourself to keep everyone else comfortable. But a standard isn’t a punishment for someone else. It’s clarity about what you are—and are no longer—willing to participate in. In this episode of The Unapologetic Woman, Gen gets deeply personal about her own evolution with standards, family, marriage, motherhood, sobriety, and the uncomfortable realization that loving someone does not require unlimited access to you. We’re talking about the difference between a standard and control, why we negotiate away things we already know are true, and the question that can change everything: What do I already know that I keep trying not to know? Because sometimes you aren’t actually confused. Sometimes you know. You’re just grieving what accepting the truth might require from you. This conversation is for the sober woman protecting the life she fought hard to build. The woman loving someone in addiction or recovery. The wife who keeps wondering whether she’s asking for too much. The people-pleaser exhausted from explaining herself. And even the leader or business owner trying to understand how compassion and accountability can exist in the same room. Your standards don’t automatically mean leaving. They don’t mean becoming cold. They don’t mean closing your heart. Sometimes they improve communication. Sometimes they expose a pattern. Sometimes they create space for a healthier relationship. And yes—sometimes they reveal that something cannot continue the way it has been. You don’t have to stop loving someone to stop negotiating yourself away. And you don’t need to know how the entire story ends to start showing up differently in the chapter you’re living right now. 🎧 Listen to this one when you know something needs to change—but you’re scared of what happens when you finally take yourself seriously. And send it to the woman who keeps asking everyone else what she should do… when somewhere deep inside, she may already know. Motivation Is Cute. Your Life Is Built By What You Do Anyway. with Gen Stoney

Motivation is cute. She buys the new planner. Gets the matching water bottle. Wakes up Monday morning convinced this is it—we are changing our entire freaking life. And then Thursday happens. The kids need you. Work sucked. You barely slept. Your partner annoyed you. And the Peloton is staring at you from underneath the laundry you threw on it. So… we’ll start again Monday. 😂 Except your life isn’t actually built on the days you feel wildly motivated. It’s built in the ordinary moments when nobody is watching—and you choose what matters anyway. In this episode of The Unapologetic Woman, Gen gets real about motivation, discipline, recovery, perfectionism, self-trust, and why becoming the woman you want to be has a whole lot less to do with getting yourself “together” than you might think. Because discipline doesn’t have to mean punishment. What if discipline became devotion instead? Devotion to your sobriety. Your peace. Your marriage. Your health. Your boundaries. Your dreams. Your integrity. And ultimately, the woman you are becoming. Gen shares why her own rigid approach to early recovery eventually stopped serving her, what an unexpected craving taught her years into sobriety, and why self-trust isn’t something you simply decide you have. You build evidence for it. One promise. One choice. One ordinary Tuesday at a time. And if you fall off? The answer isn’t shame. It’s return. Whether you’re sober, love someone in recovery, struggle with perfectionism, keep waiting to “feel ready,” or are simply exhausted from starting over every Monday—this conversation might be exactly what you need today. 🎧 Listen now, then try Gen’s simple 24-hour experiment. And send this episode to the woman who keeps thinking she needs more motivation when maybe… she needs an entirely different relationship with discipline. The Emotional Reset: What To Do Before You Send The Text. with Gen Stoney

Before you send the text… put the damn phone down. You know the moment. Their tone changed. Your partner said something that hit a nerve. Your adult child didn’t call. Your teenager slammed the door. Your boss sent, “Can we talk tomorrow?” And suddenly your brain has written, directed, and produced an entire disaster movie before anything has actually happened. Now you want to fix it. Explain yourself. Get reassurance. Demand an answer. Send the seven-paragraph text. And you can do all of that completely sober. In this episode of The Unapologetic Woman, we’re talking about something recovery doesn’t always prepare us for: what happens when you stop numbing your emotions…but still have to learn how to live with them. Because feeling something deeply doesn’t mean you have to act on it immediately. Gen gets personal about her own patterns in recovery—the anger, blaming, nitpicking, urgency, and need to resolve things right now—and shares the emotional reset she uses to interrupt the reaction before it becomes tomorrow’s regret. We’re getting into: • How to separate what actually happened from the story your fear is telling you • Why urgency can masquerade as intuition • What to do physically when your nervous system is screaming, DO SOMETHING • How to recognize what is actually yours to carry • Why the goal isn’t becoming less emotional—it’s learning not to give every emotion voting rights over your behavior • And how these tiny moments become some of the most powerful ways you rebuild self-trust You don’t have to chase. You don’t have to threaten. You don’t have to rescue. And you do not have to determine the entire future tonight. Maybe the next level of your recovery isn’t learning how to feel less. Maybe it’s discovering that you can feel all of it—and still stay with yourself. 🎧 Listen before you send the text. And send this episode to the friend who has ever needed someone to confiscate her phone for 20 minutes. 😂 Send us Fan Mail BRING GEN TO YOUR ORGANIZATION Looking for a speaker, workshop, or consulting support for your college, workplace, organization, or community? The Relationship Inventory Most Women Are Afraid To Take with Gen Stoney

You can love someone deeply and still need to take an honest look at the relationship. Not “Do I love them?” A different question: Who am I when I’m with them? Can you tell the truth without editing yourself? Can you say no? Can they? Do their words match their behavior—and do yours? Are you loving the person in front of you, or staying emotionally committed to who you hope they’ll eventually become? In this episode of The Unapologetic Woman, Gen Stoney walks you through a relationship inventory designed to do one thing: give you information. Not tell you to stay. Not tell you to leave. Not make your partner the villain. And definitely not let you make yourself responsible for fixing everything. Gen gets personal about the seasons in her own marriage and recovery when it was easier to blame, nitpick, overfunction, or focus on what Ray needed to change than to honestly examine the entire relationship—including her own side of the street. Because sometimes we confuse working on ourselves with trying to change someone else. If I communicate better, maybe they'll finally… If I heal this, maybe they'll start… If I love them enough, maybe they'll become… That isn't always growth. Sometimes it's people-pleasing and codependency wearing a very convincing self-development costume. Whether you're sober and questioning your marriage, rebuilding a long-term relationship, dating again and terrified of repeating old patterns, or simply wondering why something that looks “fine” doesn't feel right anymore, these questions may help you see what you've been too close to see. And one of them might hit especially hard: If nothing about this person changed over the next year, what would I have to acknowledge about this relationship? Love matters. But love isn't the only information that matters. Grab your coffee, take me on your walk, or save this one for when you can sit somewhere quiet and actually answer the questions. And if there's a woman you love who's struggling in her relationship? Send her this episode—not your opinion. Sometimes she doesn't need someone else to tell her what to do. She needs the right questions to finally hear herself. Can You Receive Feedback Without Losing Yourself? with Gen Stoney

Can someone challenge you without you collapsing…or putting your armor on? Someone tells you that you hurt them. Your spouse says, “I don’t feel heard.” Your boss says, “This needs work.” And suddenly, you’re not hearing feedback anymore. You’re hearing: I’m failing. I screwed everything up. They’re mad at me. I’m a bad person. Or maybe you go the complete opposite direction: Absolutely not. That’s their problem. I’m protecting my peace. Here’s the uncomfortable truth: neither one is freedom. In this episode of The Unapologetic Woman, Gen gets deeply personal about learning to receive feedback without people-pleasing, becoming defensive, abandoning yourself, or automatically assuming everyone else must be right. Because self-trust doesn’t mean believing you’re always right. And being coachable doesn’t mean everybody else gets to define you. Gen shares how defensiveness once showed up in her own marriage, why feedback can feel like rejection when your identity is built around being the good one, responsible one, successful one, sober one, and how learning to separate your behavior from your identity can completely change the way you navigate relationships, recovery, leadership, parenting, business, and even the way you lead yourself. You’ll also hear Gen’s simple five-part coachability framework: Hear. Take. Ask. Adjust. Process. And maybe most importantly, you’ll learn to ask a question that can be wildly uncomfortable: Am I rejecting this feedback because it’s wrong…or because I really don’t want it to be right? Because not every criticism deserves a seat at your table. Some feedback is wisdom. Some is projection. Some is control. Some comes from people uncomfortable with your boundaries. And some might be pointing directly toward a blind spot you’re finally ready to see. The work is learning the difference. 🎧 Listen if you struggle with criticism, defensiveness, people-pleasing, codependency, conflict, self-trust, or taking feedback personally—even when you know the person giving it loves you. And if you know someone who either completely falls apart when corrected or immediately throws the emotional drawbridge up and declares, “I’m protecting my peace!”…send them this one. 😉 Feedback can refine you without defining you.
