Just Common Sense | 186 | Are You Voting Your Convictions...or Just Following Tradition?

Are you voting your convictions—or just voting the way you've always voted? For some people, political loyalty is practically inherited. They grow up supporting a particular party, adopt the same assumptions as their families or communities, and rarely stop to question whether those commitments still reflect what they believe. On this episode of Just Common Sense, Dr. Johnny Hunter returns to a recurring theme: “You Are What You Vote.” Johnny begins with the biblical account of Rahab, whose decision to protect the Israelite spies demonstrated a willingness to break with the expectations of her surroundings and trust the God of Israel. He then turns to Matthew 15, where Jesus confronts religious traditions and explains that what comes from the heart reveals the true condition of a person. For Johnny, that principle extends into everyday decisions—including the way Christians approach politics. He challenges listeners to examine their loyalties rather than automatically accepting the traditions, political affiliations, or promises they've inherited. The episode also addresses the first commandment and the importance of placing God above every competing allegiance. Johnny and his cohost discuss their concerns about certain fraternity and sorority pledges, including a personal account of deciding against joining a sorority. From there, the conversation moves into political commentary, including: Party loyalty and voting traditionsCampaign promises and political deceptionAllegations surrounding an Alaska Senate election strategySecond Amendment disputes involving firearms, knives, and protective equipmentImmigration and national securityPolitical investigations and election-related headlinesConstitutional amendments and voter decisionsDrawing from Ephesians 5:6, Johnny warns listeners against being deceived by empty words. He also points to Jesus' response when Peter used a sword during His arrest, reminding listeners that possessing a weapon does not make violence the answer to every conflict. Throughout the program, Johnny offers his distinctly conservative Christian perspective on current political and cultural issues. His central challenge is to examine every allegiance in light of Scripture. Don't let tradition make your decisions. Don't let political promises replace discernment. And don't place any earthly loyalty above your commitment to Christ. Scripture: Joshua 2; Matthew 15:16–20; Deuteronomy 5:7; Ephesians 5:6; John 18:10–11 Topics: Christian voting, political loyalty, biblical convictions, traditions, discernment, election controversies, Second Amendment rights, immigration, and civic responsibility. Just Common Sense | 181 | Seminary in a Suitcase II: Back from Bolivia

Pastor Dale Paschall traveled to Bolivia to teach pastors. But after the teaching was finished, another assignment was waiting. In this episode of Just Common Sense, Dr. Johnny Hunter and Pat welcome Pastor Dale back from his first overseas mission trip for Part Two of “Seminary in a Suitcase.” Dale shares stories from Santa Cruz and Cochabamba—from adjusting to life at 8,000 feet in the Andes and experiencing Bolivian culture to working through an interpreter and watching pastors and their families arrive after long workdays for hours of biblical training. The team began with MyCircle training, equipping believers to have Gospel conversations with the people already around them. Then came five nights of IBAC training, where Dale and the team helped teach the doctrine of the Holy Spirit to local pastors and believers. But one of the most memorable moments happened after Dale thought his teaching assignment was finished. A local pastor invited him to visit a prison for young men ages 14–17. Dale shared his testimony, taught from 1 Timothy 4:12 and reminded them that their present circumstances didn't prevent them from living for God. By the end of the visit, 18 young men had come forward and professed faith in Jesus. It's a conversation about missions, discipleship and what can happen when Christians take the Great Commission seriously enough to simply say yes to the next opportunity.
