    The Omnibus Show E070 Judge David Dreyer and Rick Markoff On a Friendship Greater Than Division

    Carmel, IN – September 3, 2024 – On this episode of The Omnibus Show, we welcome the Honorable Judge David Dreyer (Ret.) for the Marion County Superior Court, along with Rick Markoff of the Carmel Rotary Club and the 2021 Rotarian of the Year. This program will focus on their friendship and what developed as a deeper loyalty, hearing about the attacks on 9/11, while having breakfast in Indianapolis. In this season of deep cultural division, these two men with different backgrounds discuss the value of friendship and how tragedy ad difficulty can forge greater bonds. Judge Dreyer earned his J.D. degree from the Notre Dame Law School. Throughout the years, he has served in many roles and has received many honors in those positions. Much of his work has involved Pro Bono work, and he won the Pro Bono Publico Award from the Indiana Bar Foundation in 2004 and the Randall T. Shepard Award from the Indiana Pro Bono Commission. In 2010, he received the Civility Award from the Indiana State Bar Association. He has worked with several schools with their law programs, including IUPUI, Indiana University School of Law – Indianapolis, and the University of Nevada-Reno National Judicial College. Dreyer has worked as an attorney in private practice, as a staff attorney, as Special Counsel to the State of Indiana, as Chief Counsel to the Marion County Prosecutor, as Judge for the Marion County Superior Court, and since 2020, as a Senior Judge. Dreyer is a member of the Rotary Club of Indianapolis and has served on the Rotary Education Week Equity Awards Selection Committee, as well as serving as a Rotary Club of Indianapolis Foundation Board Member. It was Judge Dreyer who officiated the renewal of wedding vows for today’s co-guest, Richard Markoff, and his wife, Beverly. Richard Markoff, Ph.D. has a long history with The Rotary Club. Leadership Connection was one of his focuses through Rotary. This branded event of the Rotary Club of Carmel grew under his leadership to enhance the lives of and provide mentoring to many students in Carmel and Indianapolis communities. His creation, The Greatest Conference Never Held, is utilized as a model for Rotary Club programming throughout Indiana. Markoff was named Carmel Rotary Club Rotarian of the Year for 2021-2022. Markoff’s life and career have been full of various positions and activities. He was the founding President of the Damar Foundation which raises funds to support Damar Services, serving children and adults with behavioral and developmental disabilities. He served as Executive Vice President of the Simon Youth Foundation. Prior to this, Dr. Markoff was in the Office of the C.E.O., Government and Community Relations, for the American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis. Prior to moving to Indianapolis in 1995, Dr. Markoff was President of the St. Vincent Medical Center Foundation in Toledo. As a Field Artillery officer in the U.S. Army, he was awarded the Bronze Star and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm. Dr. Markoff was recognized by The University of Toledo College of Education with its Distinguished Achievement Award.     Carmel, IN – August 26, 2024 – On this episode of The Omnibus Show, we welcome Chris Lewis, Executive Director of The Great American Songbook Foundation. Lewis assumed his role with the Songbook Foundation in 2017, after five years as Director of Programs. He oversees all the organization’s activities, including management of the Songbook Archives & Library, the Songbook Exhibit Gallery, the Songbook Hall of Fame, and all educational and outreach programming. Hear how Lewis spearheaded the national expansion of the Foundation’s most prominent education program, the annual Songbook Academy® summer intensive, as well as the development of Perfect Harmony, a research-based program of therapeutic musical activities designed for people living with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and other neurodegenerative diseases. Lewis also cultivated the Foundation’s relationship with the Los Angeles-based Grammy Museum®, which now recognizes the Foundation as one of its five Cultural Affiliates around the world. Lewis is an accomplished musician with professional vocal experience. He received a master's degree in education from Mercy College and has worked as a history teacher and special education liaison for the New York City Department of Education.     The Omnibus Show E068 IU Emeritus Foundation President Curt Simic On Higher Education and Philanthropy

    Carmel, IN – August 19, 2024 – On this episode of The Omnibus Show, we welcome Curt Simic, Indiana University Foundation President Emeritus. He is a national leader in fundraising for higher education and has worked for several universities in his over 40-year career. Simic discusses the successes during his years, the challenges of higher education, today, how donors make a difference, his advice for those who are interested in pursuing a career in higher education development and philanthropy, and the complexity of running a contemporary university. Simic is from Gary, Indiana, and graduated from Indiana University. Over the years, he served at Yale University and the universities of Tennessee, Alabama, Oregon and California-Berkeley, before returning to IU as president of its foundation in 1988. He spent 13 years as the head of IU's official fund-raising agency, and increased gifts from the private sector from $37 million to more than $230.1 million by 2001. He helped IU become ranked as one of the top 20 universities in the nation in total voluntary support from the private sector.  IU recognized Simic with several awards. In 1994 he received the Thomas Hart Benton Mural Medallion. In 2008, he was awarded the University Medal, and in 2012, Simic was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Service Award. In 2016, Indiana University awarded him with an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at its Bloomington campus for his outstanding achievement in the arts and humanities, and for his continued community engagement and public service. Simic also received the Bicentennial Medal for his distinguished contributions to IU. Simic helped found the National Committee for Institutionally Related Foundations, now a part of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). He served on CASE's National Board of Trustees and received CASE’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. He was a faculty member and then dean of the Big Ten Fundraisers Institute.  Simic has authored book chapters and articles about the relationship between foundations and their educational institutions, the fundraising responsibilities of foundations and of institutional governing board members, faculty relations, and funding mechanisms for foundations.     The Omnibus Show E067 IN Rep Jerry Torr Discusses Accomplishments, Music, and the Upcoming Election

    Carmel, IN – August 12, 2024 – On this episode of The Omnibus Show, we welcome Indiana State Representative, Jerry Torr, from House District 39 in Hamilton County. Torr has been a member of the Indiana House of Representatives since 1996. Hear about his experiences in the House as he served on the committees of Employment, Labor, and Pensions; Rules and Legislative Procedures; Vice Chair of Joint Rules; and, Vice Chair of the Judiciary. Torr, a sixth generation Hoosier, grew up in Putnam County, and moved to Carmel, IN in 1987. He is a graduate of Hanover College and attended the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA. We will discuss issues that have been important to Torr over his years in public service, including: creating jobs in the Hoosier state, the Health Insurance Waiver Act, the Daylight Savings Time Bill, and finding ways to halt gerrymandering in Indiana. We also discuss his musical journey. In October of 2017, Torr conducted his original composition, Fanfare for a New Era, which was performed by the Carmel Symphony Orchestra at the Palladium in Carmel. Before joining Near North Title Group, formerly known as Hamilton National Title, in 2014, Torr was a Client Executive at the Hylant Group, and prior to that a Commercial Casualty General Adjuster with FCCI Insurance Company in Carmel. He was previously a member of the Central Indiana Claims Association and the National Society of Professional Insurance Investors. He also previously served on the board of the Indiana Forum for Fair Liability Laws. In addition, Torr formerly served as the Director of the President of the State Adjuster’s Association. He served on the board of the Indiana Forum for Fair Liability Laws, as well as the boards of the National MS Society Indiana Chapter, Indiana Humanities, and Carmel Symphony Orchestra. Torr has been honored twice as Government Leader of the Year by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce at its annual awards dinner, first in 2005 and again in 2012.     The Omnibus Show E066 Marria Peduto On Studying Abroad and the Business of Fish

    Carmel, IN – August 5, 2024 – On this episode of The Omnibus Show, we welcome Marria Peduto, an Indiana University student and Fulbright Research Scholar, who has extensively studied abroad. Peduto is an Indianapolis native whose career and education have brought her to every continent and over 20 countries. She recently completed a Fulbright grant in Indonesia researching the impact of coral reef restoration on local livelihoods. This fall, Peduto will begin a Masters of Marine Affairs at the University of Washington to research the environmental and regulatory frameworks affecting seafood trade. Peduto served as a Youth Ambassador for the United States at Expo 2020 Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. She speaks Mandarin and Indonesian which she learned through U.S. government funded exchange programs. Peduto’s experiences abroad have inspired her passion for citizen diplomacy, and she works to improve access for underserved communities in international exchange.     Carmel, IN – July 29, 2024 – On this episode of The Omnibus Show, we welcome Eric Halvorson who spent 33 years as an anchor and reporter with WISH-TV, in Indianapolis, and now serves as the Manager of Public Affairs for the Central Division of the Kroger Company. Listen in as Halvorson recounts his background in television at both Channel 4 and WISH-TV. He shares stories of his most memorable interviews, including one that stands out with Jim Morris who was with the World Food Program and worked with former U.S. President, Barack Obama in the journey to feed the world. Halvorson discusses how he came to be in his current position with Kroger as the Manager of Corporate Affairs. This position has given him the opportunity to expand on goals he discussed with Morris in that long ago interview. One of his main focuses, currently, is the Zero Hunger, Zero Waste Program.     The Omnibus Show E063 Former Indiana Senator Jim Merritt Talks Politics, Podcasts, & His Covid Book

    Carmel, IN – July 15, 2024 – On this episode of The Omnibus Show, we welcome Jim Merritt, former Indiana State Senator and President of JWM Consulting. Merritt also has three podcasts, is on WIBC Radio, works as a consultant, and is in the midst of writing a new book. Merritt discusses the ideas behind each of his podcasts: Jim Merritt's Indiana, Merritt in the Morning, and Talk Radio GOP coming soon. He discusses his strong belief in public service, as well as the many laws and policies he helped pass when in the Senate. Among those are the Safe Haven Law, which allows mothers to surrender their infants without fear of prosecution, and the Indiana Lifeline Law, which allows people to request help for minors who have overdosed or drank too much alcohol, again without being prosecuted. Merritt discusses his time in office and the upcoming elections – both here in Indiana and on the national level. He reflects on how the government is shaping the world we live in and how the cost of living is affecting those in our community with issues such as healthcare and hunger, as well as, areas for growth. “Lessons Learned,” is Merritt’s upcoming book, which he mentions, which addresses the various changes that have happened since the Covid pandemic.
