The hangout with Tsip Tsip

Tshepo Tsotetsi

This podcast is all about the wellness of performing artists, going into the depths of everything we're afraid to talk about in this fluid environment. I wanna see everything that happens behind the big artistic machines that we see, hear and adore so much, the victories, failures and lessons in it all.

Hanging out with one of the hottest saxophone players in the land, Sisonke Xonti.

In this episode on The hangout with Tsip Tsip we feature steaming hot saxophonist Sisonke Xonti who made waves performing with the likes of Jimmy Dludlu, Herbie Tsoaeli, Feya Faku, Nduduzo Makhathini to name a few. Xonti, the 2020 Standard Bank Young Artist Award winner for Jazz, is an increasingly well-known saxophonist. Few would have guessed, however, that the musician only took up music as a full-time career six years ago, having studied towards a degree in law throughout his university career. “In 2012 I finished my law degree, and I knew by then that I had no passion for it,” explains the Cape Town-born artist. Throughout his studies Xonti had been performing with friends who were all now playing music professionally, building sustainable careers out of the craft. Xonti made the crucial decision to move up to Joburg in 2013. “That was it,” he says. “Music became my full-time career. Finally, a moment that Xonti holds dear to his heart was the 2017 release of his debut album Iyonde, named after his own middle-name and meaning ‘to be enjoyed’. Winning the SBYAA for Jazz is something Xonti says he’s still processing. “It’s such a huge honour to win an award like this; I’m not sure I’ve processed the news yet. It’s an incredible amount of recognition for the work you do,” he says. “Sometimes I still feel so young in this industry, so it means a lot to know that your work is being acknowledged.” We chat about the music scene, his background in Cape Town and extensively about his second offering ‘uGaba the Migration’.
