E21: Tell Me About Yourself...What Do They Really Want to Know?

🎙️ Episode 21: “Tell Me About Yourself”…What Do They Really Want to Know? Four simple words. “Tell me about yourself.” And suddenly, one of the most experienced professionals in the room may not know what to say. Where do you start? How far back should you go? Should you walk through your résumé? How much is too much? But maybe the challenge goes deeper than the interview question. How comfortable are you talking about yourself professionally? In this episode of The Career Owner Podcast, Career Ownership Coach Kim Boyd explores why being able to clearly talk about who you are, what you bring, and where you're going is more than an interview skill. It’s a Career Ownership skill. You'll learn a simple framework for answering “Tell me about yourself” naturally and confidently: WHO I AM → WHAT I BRING → WHY I’M HERE We’ll talk about: ✨ What interviewers really want to know ✨ Why you don't need to tell your entire career history ✨ The difference between articulating your value and bragging ✨ Why your résumé isn't your answer ✨ How experienced and long-tenured professionals can focus their stories ✨ How to prepare without memorizing ✨ Why getting comfortable talking about your career matters beyond the interview Because opportunities don't only happen during formal interviews. Someone may ask: “What do you do?” “What are you looking for next?” “Tell me a little about your background.” Career Owners should be prepared to answer. 🎯 CAREER OWNER HOMEWORK Create your own response using: WHO I AM — Who are you professionally today? WHAT I BRING — What two or three strengths, experiences or contributions do you want someone to understand about you? WHY I’M HERE — How does what you bring connect to what you're looking for next? Put the three pieces together, say it out loud, and then record yourself answering: “Tell me about yourself.” Your goal isn't perfection. Your goal is clarity and confidence. You did the work. You should be able to talk about the work. 🎧 Listen now and follow The Career Owner Podcast for new career conversations every Thursday. E20: I Got the Interview...Now What?

🎙️ Episode 20 — I Got the Interview…Now What? How to Turn the Interview Into a Career Conversation You got the interview! 🎉 First comes the excitement. Then come the questions. What are they going to ask me? What if I get nervous? What if I say the wrong thing? How do I make sure they see that I’m the right person for the job? Here’s something every job seeker needs to remember: An interview is not an interrogation. It’s a two-way conversation. Yes, the employer is deciding whether your experience, skills, and approach match what they need. But you’re making a decision too. In Episode 20 of The Career Owner Podcast, Career Ownership Coach Kim Boyd shares how to approach your next interview with preparation, curiosity, and confidence—not cockiness. We’re talking about how to: ✨ Prepare without memorizing scripted answers✨ Build a Career Story Bank so you’re ready with real examples✨ Turn résumé claims into evidence through your stories✨ Listen and answer the question actually being asked✨ Manage nerves and avoid chasing the “perfect” answer✨ Research the opportunity before the conversation✨ Ask questions that help you evaluate the employer✨ Remember that you are interviewing them, too Kim also takes you Behind the Curtain with perspective from her experience as both a hiring manager and Talent Acquisition professional—including something candidates sometimes forget: The interviewer wants you to do well. You weren’t invited to the interview by accident. Something about your background made someone say: “I want to know more about this person.” Now it’s your opportunity to give your career a voice. 🎯 Career Owner Homework: Build your Career Story Bank. Identify five experiences that demonstrate your leadership, problem-solving, adaptability, communication, teamwork, initiative, or other strengths—and practice telling those stories out loud. Remember: They’re deciding whether they want you. You’re deciding whether you want them. That’s not arrogance. That’s Career Ownership. 🎧 Listen now, follow The Career Owner Podcast, and share this episode with someone preparing for an interview. New career conversations every Thursday. Own Your Career. E19: Open to Work. Open to Opportunities.

We hear it all the time: “I'm open to opportunities.” Maybe you've said it yourself. Maybe you've turned on LinkedIn's Open to Work feature. Maybe you're actively job searching—or maybe you're perfectly happy where you are but willing to consider the right opportunity. But here's the question: What are you actually open to? A new job? A different industry? More responsibility—or less? Consulting? Leadership? Flexibility? A career pivot? Something you haven't even considered yet? And just as important: What are you no longer open to? In Episode 19 of The Career Owner Podcast, Career Ownership Coach Kim Boyd explores why career clarity matters whether you're actively looking for work or simply staying open to what's possible. We'll talk about why “I'm open to anything” can actually make it harder for recruiters, colleagues, and your network to help you—and why being good at something doesn't mean you have to keep doing it. We'll also look at LinkedIn's Open to Work feature, the debate around the green banner, and why there isn't one career strategy that's right for everyone. Because your résumé tells the story of what you've done. It doesn't automatically determine what you have to do next. 🎯 Career Owner Homework: Create your Opportunity Filter by getting clear about: ✨ What you're open to✨ What you're curious about✨ What you're no longer interested in✨ The strengths you want to use more✨ Your current non-negotiables✨ The opportunities you'd consider—even if you weren't actively looking And then answer one final question: If someone called tomorrow and said, “I have an opportunity I think you'd be perfect for,” what would need to be true for you to say, “Tell me more”? Being Open to Work is about availability. Being Open to Opportunities is about possibility. Career Ownership requires clarity about both. 🎙️ New episodes every Thursday. Own Your Career. E18: I've Updated my Resume...Now What?

E18 — I’ve Updated My Résumé…Now What? How to Conduct a Job Search That Actually Gets Results You did it! You updated your résumé. You cleaned up the formatting, strengthened your accomplishments, checked the keywords, proofread it one more time—and now you're ready to start applying. But now what? Do you head to the job boards and start clicking Apply? How many applications should you submit? Should you contact recruiters? What about networking? Do you need a target-company list? Should you follow up after applying? And how do you know whether your job-search strategy is actually working? In Episode 18 of The Career Owner Podcast, Career Ownership Coach Kim Boyd takes you beyond the résumé and into the part of the job search that often gets overlooked: building and managing an intentional job-search strategy. Because applying for jobs and conducting a job search are not the same thing. In this episode, we're talking about how to move beyond Apply. Apply. Apply. Wait. and create a job search with multiple lanes working together—including targeting, research, strategic applications, networking, LinkedIn visibility, follow-up, tracking, and adjustment. You'll also go Behind the Curtain with Kim as she shares lessons from both sides of the hiring process—as a former hiring manager and Talent Acquisition recruiter who reviewed hundreds of résumés, and as a professional who recently found herself navigating her own job elimination and career transition. We'll talk about why your professional network should never be treated as an emergency button, why more applications don't necessarily mean more progress, and why Career Owners pay attention to traction—not simply activity. ✨ Why your résumé is a tool—not your entire job-search strategy✨ How to get clear about the positions you're actually targeting✨ Why you should identify target companies—not just open jobs✨ The difference between applying strategically and applying everywhere✨ How to use networking without making it feel transactional✨ Why LinkedIn is much more than an online résumé✨ When and how to follow up✨ Why tracking your job search matters✨ How to recognize where you're gaining traction—and where you're getting stuck✨ When it's time to adjust your strategy✨ How to protect your energy and confidence during a longer job search This week, don't measure success simply by how many applications you submit. Track the activities that can create movement: Your target positions.Your target companies.Quality applications submitted.Professional contacts made.New conversations.Follow-ups.LinkedIn activity.Interviews and recruiter responses. Then ask yourself: What's working? What's not? What will I change next week? Because a successful job search isn't about being the person who submitted the most applications. It's about creating the right conversations, the right connections, and ultimately, the right opportunity. E17: Does Your Resume Still Matter?

E17 — Does Your Résumé Really Matter Anymore? One page or two? What about three? Every bullet needs a number. Never use this word. Always include that section. Beat the ATS. Follow this exact format. If you've spent any time online looking for résumé advice, you've probably heard it all—and much of it contradicts something you heard five minutes earlier. So what's actually true? In Episode 17 of The Career Owner Podcast, Career Ownership Coach Kim Boyd cuts through the résumé noise and takes a practical, real-world look at what a résumé actually needs to accomplish in today's job market. Spoiler alert: There is no single perfect résumé formula. Your résumé still matters—but its job isn't to get you hired. Its job is to clearly communicate your experience, relevance, accomplishments, and professional value and help open the door to the next conversation. Drawing from decades of corporate, recruiting, HR, and career coaching experience, Kim explores why résumés aren't one-size-fits-all—and why job seekers should be cautious about blindly following every résumé "rule" they encounter online. ✨ Does the résumé still matter?Yes—but perhaps not in the way you think. ✨ The problem with résumé absolutes"Always do this." "Never do that." Context matters. Your industry, experience, career goals, audience, and target opportunity should influence your résumé. ✨ Quantitative vs. qualitative accomplishmentsDoes every bullet need a number? No. Numbers can demonstrate scope, scale and measurable results, but meaningful impact isn't always numerical. Sometimes the better question is: What was better because you were there? ✨ One page, two pages...or three? There's no universal answer. Relevant experience, career level, industry, and the story you're telling should determine what earns space on the page. ✨ More experience doesn't mean including everythingYour résumé isn't your autobiography. As your career grows, your résumé should become more strategic and selective—not simply longer. ✨ ATS, keywords and tailoringYour goal isn't to "beat" a system. It's to clearly communicate relevant qualifications and make the connection between what the employer needs and what you bring. ✨ AI and résumé writingAI can be a valuable tool, but it shouldn't become the author of a career it didn't live. ✨ Why a great résumé still may not get an interviewCompetition, fit, internal candidates, referrals, timing and other factors matter. A rejection doesn't automatically mean your résumé is the problem. Pull out the résumé you would actually send tomorrow and ask: Can someone tell what I do?Can someone tell what I'm good at?Can someone see evidence of the impact I've made? Then choose one position that genuinely interests you and compare it with your résumé. Have you made it easy for the employer to see the connection between what they need and what you've done? Don't chase the "perfect" résumé. Build an honest, compelling and relevant one—and remember, your résumé is only one tool in your Career Owner toolkit. E16: Job Searching -- Today vs. Yesterday...what still works?

The job market has changed. Has your job-search strategy changed with it? There was a time when searching the classified, submitting a resume, completing an application, and waiting for the phone to ring could be enough. Today? Not so much. In Episode 16 of The Career Owner Podcast, Career Ownership Coach Kim Boyd takes a practical look at job searching then versus job searching now--what has changed, what still works, and what does today's job seeker need to do differently? Because while the tools have changed, relationships, preparation, professionalism, continuous learning, and knowing how to communicate your value haven't gone out of style. In this episode: ✨What's changed about the modern job search. ✨Which traditional job-search strategies still work. ✨Why applying to more jobs isn't necessarily a better strategy. ✨The importance of relationships and professional visibility. ✨Why your resume is only one part of your job search. ✨What every professional should have in their Career Owner Toolkit. ✨Practical steps you can take now--even if you're not currently looking for a job. 🎯 Career Owner Homework This week, don't just listen--take action. Find three positions that genuinely interest you. Compare the qualifications and identify the skills that repeatedly appear. Then review your resume and LinkedIn profile and ask yourself: Could I compete for these opportunities today? Finally, reconnect with one person in your professional network--not because you need something, but because relationships should be built before we need them. The job market has changed. The question is: Have you changed with it? _____________________________________________________________ CareerGLOW Coaching helps professionals become Career Owners by building clarity, confidence, tools, and strategies needed to navigate today's workplace and stay prepared for what's next. 🌐Learn about Career GLOW Coaching, our services, and upcoming events at careerglowcoaching.com. 🎙️If this episode gives you something to think about--or something to do--please follow, like, share, and subscribe to The Career Owner Podcast.
