This week, Brian reports back on Twisted Teens’ Florida Water Blues, an album that raises several important questions. Is three albums in one year too many? Why does New Orleans produce so few rock bands? And has modern music quietly adopted a requirement that every album contain at least one reference to the cunning linguist? We don’t know, but we know where we got our episode’s title. From there, we discover that MTV still exists and, even more improbably, still hands out Video Music Awards. Music videos, Casey Kasem, Rick Dees, VH1 and the long-lost thrill of waiting for a “world premiere” send us into full nostalgia mode. Naturally, that somehow leads to Paramount, Warner Bros. Discovery, CBS, CNN, HBO, John Oliver, streaming price increases, and the increasingly expensive privilege of subscribing to services that may be actively getting worse. Then Cort unveils his first game: Dead, Alive, or Still F*****g Touring. Men Without Hats, Jesus Jones, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Echo & the Bunnymen, Squeeze, Soul Asylum, Crowded House, Fine Young Cannibals, Violent Femmes, The Church, Live and A Flock of Seagulls all go on trial, and the results are interesting … to Cort at least. We also check back in on The Traitors and Survivor, contemplate some fun changes that up the money ante of some of our favorite reality shows, and eventually Brian sends Cort off with a brand-new assignment.
