EP 96 // When “Pray More” Isn’t Enough: Healing the Mind, Body & Spirit with Chel Cartmill

What happens when you love God, you’re praying, you’re reading your Bible…and you’re still hurting? In this episode of The Business of Inner Peace, I’m joined by trauma-informed master coach, author, and ReCLAIM founder Chel Cartmill for a powerful conversation about healing after covert emotional abuse, divorce, betrayal, and the loss of the life you thought you were going to have. Chel shares her own journey through a decade of covert emotional abuse and the traumatic aftermath of divorce—and how that experience eventually led her to help others rebuild their confidence, reconnect with themselves, and step into who God created them to be. We talk about what covert emotional abuse can actually look like, why it can leave you questioning your own reality, and how people-pleasing, suppressed emotions, and survival mode can disconnect us from our bodies and our own inner knowing. But we also go somewhere I believe the Church desperately needs to go. What if healing isn't simply about praying more, reading more Scripture, or trying harder to have enough faith? What if God designed us with a mind, body, nervous system, emotions, and spirit—and healing can involve all of them? Chel and I explore nervous system regulation, somatic work, breathwork, neuroplasticity, boundaries, self-love, and the importance of learning to receive instead of constantly giving from depletion. We also talk about something many Christian women quietly wrestle with: the fear that certain healing practices are somehow “too woo” or “New Age,” even when they can be understood through the incredible way God designed the human body. If you’ve ever wondered why you still feel stuck despite doing “all the right things,” this conversation is an invitation to release judgment, become curious about what your body may be communicating, and discover what healing can look like when faith, neuroscience, and the body are allowed to work together. You were created as a whole person. Your healing gets to include your whole person, too. In this episode, we talk about: • What covert emotional abuse looks and feels like • Gaslighting, people-pleasing, and losing trust in yourself • Rebuilding your identity after divorce or relational trauma • Why survival mode affects more than your thoughts • Nervous system regulation and somatic healing • Faith, breathwork, meditation, and the fear of “New Age” practices • Why emotions aren't something Christians need to fear • The difference between loving others and giving from depletion • Learning to love yourself without abandoning your faith • How mind, body, and spirit can work together in healing Chel Cartmill is the founder of ReCLAIM, a transformational Christ-centered 12-week healing program for men and women navigating the loss of a spouse through death or divorce, and the author of Spider On My Neck, a memoir about deceit, betrayal, and learning to trust your intuition again. EP 95 // Your Trauma Changed Your Brain—But It Doesn’t Have to Define You | Dr. Deb Gold

What if healing from trauma isn’t just a spiritual journey or a psychological one—but both? In this episode of The Business of Inner Peace, I’m joined by Dr. Deb Gold, trauma specialist, empowerment coach, national speaker, and author of Wired for Redemption, for a fascinating conversation about the intersection of neuroscience, trauma healing, and biblical truth. Dr. Deb shares her extraordinary journey from being a 14-year-old runaway and homeless teenage mother to earning her PhD and helping other women heal from trauma. We explore how painful experiences can create neurological patterns that continue influencing our thoughts, relationships, and nervous system long after the original danger has passed. But those patterns don’t have to be permanent. We talk about neuroplasticity, nervous system regulation, creating new neural pathways, and why understanding what is happening in the brain can actually deepen our understanding of Scripture and our relationship with God. One of my favorite parts of our conversation is Dr. Deb’s explanation of Peter and the charcoal fire. She offers a fascinating perspective on the way Jesus returned Peter to a sensory reminder of his denial—not to shame him, but to restore and recommission him. It’s a beautiful picture of what healing and redemption can look like. We also talk about: • Why familiar patterns can feel safer than healthier ones • The role of the amygdala and prefrontal cortex in trauma responses • Why safety is foundational for emotional and spiritual healing • Breathwork and meditation through a biblical lens • EMDR and inviting Jesus into the healing process • Immanuel Prayer and memory reconsolidation • How repetition helps create new neural pathways • Why trauma may shape your responses without defining your identity If you’ve ever wondered how neuroscience and Scripture fit together—or why you can deeply love God and still struggle with old emotional patterns—this conversation is for you. You were fearfully and wonderfully made, with a brain capable of learning, changing, and healing. EP 94 // Before You Finish the Argument: What Your Nervous System Needs During Conflict

Hey Sweet Friend! Have you ever walked away from an argument thinking... "Why did I say that?" Or maybe you shut down completely, replay the conversation for hours, or can't think of what you wish you'd said until you're in the shower. You're not crazy. And you're probably not a terrible communicator. In this episode, we explore what actually happens inside the brain and nervous system during conflict—and why trying to resolve a disagreement while you're emotionally activated often creates more hurt instead of more healing. You'll discover why your body needs emotional first aid before your relationship needs another conversation. If you've ever longed to respond with more peace, wisdom, and connection instead of reacting from overwhelm, this episode will give you a completely different way to think about conflict. In this episode you'll discover: • Why your nervous system changes the way you communicate • The difference between reacting and responding • Why some conversations should wait twenty minutes • What emotional first aid actually looks like • How reconnecting with God changes the way you show up in conflict ❤️ Marriage Emotional First Aid Kit When conflict happens, you don't always need another marriage course. Sometimes you simply need help finding your way back to peace. The Marriage Emotional First Aid Kit is a simple audio resource designed for the moments before the conversation, after the fight, and when emotions begin to spiral. 👉 https://marriage-first-aid-kit.lovable.app Connect with Erin Website: https://inhispresence.life Instagram: @thebusinessofinnerpeace Facebook Group: In His Presence #ChristianMarriage #MarriageConflict #ChristianRelationships #NervousSystem #ChristianMentalHealth #MarriageAdvice #FaithAndNeuroscience #EmotionalHealing #ChristianWomen #HealthyMarriage #Communication #ConflictResolution #MarriageHealing #ExperiencingGod

EP 93 // If You Love God, Why Are You Still So Stressed? | The Missing Conversation About Faith & Your Nervous System

Hey Sweet Friend! Have you ever found yourself wondering... "If I really trusted God, why am I still so stressed?" You're not alone. Many Christian women quietly carry the belief that if they prayed more, trusted God more, or had stronger faith, they wouldn't struggle with anxiety, overwhelm, or emotional exhaustion. But what if that's not the real issue? In this episode, we explore the missing conversation between faith, neuroscience, and the God-designed nervous system. You'll discover why it's possible to know Scripture about peace while still struggling to experience that peace in your everyday life—and why that doesn't mean your faith is failing. Whether you're navigating the back-to-school season, motherhood, marriage, or simply carrying the weight of life, this episode offers a compassionate perspective that removes shame and points you back toward experiencing God's presence in the middle of real life. In this episode you'll learn: • Why loving God doesn't automatically prevent stress • The difference between knowing God's peace and experiencing it • What your nervous system has to do with your relationship with God • Why becoming activated isn't spiritual failure • Practical ways to return to God's peace during ordinary moments ✨ FREE 5-Day In His Presence Experience If you're longing to experience God's peace in your body—not just understand it in your mind—join my free 5-Day Experience. 👉 https://erinjeancoaching.systeme.io/inhispresence Connect with Erin Website: https://inhispresence.life Facebook Group: In His Presence Instagram: @thebusinessofinnerpeace #ChristianPodcast #ChristianAnxiety #FaithAndNeuroscience #ChristianWomen #NervousSystem #ExperiencingGod #ChristianMentalHealth #SpiritualGrowth #Neuroscience #ChristianFaith #OverwhelmedMom #BackToSchool #PeaceOfGod #ChristianHealing

EP 92 // Have We Forgotten How to Experience God? | Faith, Neuroscience & the Missing Conversation

Why do so many Christians know the Bible... yet still feel anxious, overwhelmed, and disconnected from God's peace? For years, I believed the answer was simple: pray more, read my Bible more, trust God more. I did all of those things. Yet I still found myself living with fear, emotional exhaustion, and reactions I couldn't seem to change. It wasn't until my marriage nearly fell apart that I began asking a different question: What if we've become really good at teaching people how to know about God... but haven't always taught them how to experience Him? In this episode, I share my personal story and the journey that led me into studying neuroscience, the nervous system, trauma, the subconscious mind, and neurotheology—not to replace my faith, but to better understand the incredible way God designed us. In this episode you'll discover: ✨ Why knowing biblical truth isn't always the same as experiencing God's peace ✨ How your nervous system influences your ability to feel safe, connected, and present with God ✨ Why anxiety isn't always a faith problem ✨ What Elijah's story teaches us about God's care for our bodies ✨ How understanding neuroscience has actually strengthened my faith If you've ever wondered: "Why do I still feel anxious if I trust God?" "Why doesn't praying seem to change how I feel?" "Why do I know God loves me but still struggle to experience His peace?" …I think this episode will encourage you. 💛 Join My FREE 5-Day In His Presence Experience If this conversation resonates with you, I'd love to invite you into my free experience where we'll explore how faith, neuroscience, and God's design work beautifully together. 📍 Join the free Facebook community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/inhispresencelife 📧 Prefer email? EP 90 // The Missing Piece in Christian Healing: Why Spirituality Needs Both Sides of the Brain

Hey Sweet Friend! Have you ever wondered why you can know God loves you... but still struggle to feel connected to Him? Why do some Christians spend years praying, studying Scripture, attending church, and serving faithfully—yet still feel stuck in the same emotional patterns? In this episode, Erin explores the fascinating world of neurotheology—the intersection of neuroscience and faith—and reveals how understanding the brain and nervous system can transform the way we experience God, healing, and relationships. You'll discover: ✨ The difference between knowing God's truth and experiencing God's presence ✨ Why information alone doesn't create transformation ✨ How your nervous system impacts your ability to connect with God ✨ The role of the right and left hemispheres of the brain in spiritual growth ✨ Why practices like Immanuel Prayer can be so profoundly healing ✨ How integrating both sides of the brain creates deeper healing and lasting change If you've ever felt frustrated because you've been doing all the "right" spiritual things but still feel disconnected, this conversation may help you understand why. Because healing isn't about trying harder. It's about learning to experience God's presence in the way He designed your brain and body to receive it. 🌿 Resources Mentioned Explore the Seen, Known & Loved Audio Sanctuary: https://erinjeanaudios.com Discover guided audios for: • Better Sleep • Anxiety Relief • Emotional Regulation • Scripture-Based Breathwork • Peace After Difficult Conversations • Nervous System Support for Everyday Life Connect with Erin: Website: https://calmmarriage.com Audio Sanctuary: https://erinjeanaudios.com Facebook: https://facebook.com/erinjeancoaching Remember: You are seen. EP 89//The Science of Experiencing Jesus (Neurotheology Explained Simply)

Hey Sweet Friend! What if your struggle to feel close to God isn’t a lack of faith… but a nervous system issue? In this deeply personal episode, I’m sharing what’s been unfolding in my own heart as I train in Immanuel Prayer—and how it’s completely transforming the way I experience Jesus. We’re diving into neurotheology—the connection between your brain, your body, and your relationship with God—and why so many women feel stuck, disconnected, or overwhelmed despite doing “all the right things.” Inside this episode, you’ll learn: Why you can know truth but not feel it What’s actually happening in your brain when you’re triggered The pain processing pathway and how unprocessed pain keeps you stuck Why your brain can’t access truth in survival mode How positive memories activate your brain’s joy center and reopen connection Why healing happens in safe, relational connection—not isolation And most importantly… How Jesus meets you right there. If you’ve ever felt like, “I’m trying so hard, but nothing is changing…” this episode will help you understand why—and show you a new way forward. 💛 Ready to go deeper?
